We found Runnymede Court via the tourist office in St Helier. We could hardly believe the prices quoted - so much lower than alternative places that we feared the worst. As it turned out, we could hardly have done better in terms of value-for-money. My sole criticism is one that applies to too many places - over-soft beds.
The staff, and especially the lady managing the operation, deserve special mention. I don't think she takes any time off and is involved directly in everything that happens. Whatever they pay her, it's not enough. Her staff training and management are exemplary.
The place itself is ten or twelve minutes' walk from the centre and 200 yards from a superb south-facing beach. Maintenance and cleaning seem to be done well, but the atmosphere is more 1960s Torquay than 2014 London; however, if I had to choose between 'boutique' and this, it would be this every time. They seem to be trying to maintain an echo of the full-service hotel of yesteryear to make guests feel comfortable (eg linen napkins) but on a low-cost budget. Breakfast was honest and good but not superb (at this price I can live with that); dinner (three courses for £12.50!) was perfectly adequate but redolent of what my wife calls 'pensioners' school dinners' - though the soups were clearly freshly-made by someone who knows how to cook.
I fear their ability to keep it up: if the manager leaves I'm sure they won't be able to and yet another hotel will become apartments.

Room Tip: The garden rooms surround a pleasant garden at the back of the hotel, ground-floor, motel-style. We...

We booked a twin for 2 nights through Booking.com. We came in by ferry from Guernsey so were looking for something reasonable within walking distance. This hotel was very easy to find as we passed TI on our way there & they very kindly directed us through the tunnel which made it a short access - abt. 15 min. walk. Also, on our way to our ferry for St. Malo it was raining & the tunnel provided coverage for part of the way. I don't believe there is any parking for this hotel but it is well served by public transport or an easy walk to town, 5 min., or the ferry.
The hotel is welcoming with a nice lobby, as was our reception by Mary. However, our room was behind the dining area in what can be best called a 1970s motel or an annex & not in the main hotel. The room had an outside entrance on a very nice court flower garden. The room was a decent size, furniture is what was once called French Provencal. Although well used, everything was quite clean including the bathroom. The beds were firm with good linens, duvet & a sheet, 2 very flat pillows. The bath was fully tiled with a tub/shower, handheld shower head. There was a rather small TV, coffee/tea service, lots of outlets, closet. Although advertised that there was wifi, there was not in our room. We had to go to the lounge to use the wifi. It was cool with some rain during our stay & the room was on the cool side. There was no way to turn on the bath radiators & the bathroom was cold. The bathroom was a nice size with a tub/shower. The room was very quiet as I don't think many were in the annex. We felt like second class citizens as we entered the dining room through the small back door to our assigned table by the back door. The staff would not see us come in so we were not served promptly. Once we were notice, the food, however, was good. We ate breakfast & dinner there both days because it was easier. The fixed menus were 3 courses for 12.5 each, a very good value for what was served. Unfortunately, their bar did not have any decent beers. The man operating the bar was not particularly friendly. Breakfast was also fine with a small sideboard. We were expected to wait for a server to replenish our coffee rather than help ourselves as in some other hotels. The staff did catch on & came by to top off often. The restaurant staff was very good & friendly. We ordered full English breakfasts both mornings. The second morning we were at breakfast before 8:00 service & were able to get coffee, a very good granola & order a hot breakfast which was served by 8:00, giving us plenty of time to walk to our next ferry. We appreciated the staff's flexibility. Mary arranged an all day bus tour for us & was helpful in all ways. We don't know what the hotel would do without her as she was everywhere doing everything. If we had a room in the main hotel & not felt like we were delegated to the back of the bus, this rating would have been higher as this is a very good value for food, location & service. As it is a 3+ & a recommendation for a room in the hotel is in order.

On arrival myself and the couple I was with were made most welcome and due to the late arrival of our flight from the UK we were just in time for the lovely three course evening meal. We were shown to a table that had been reserved for us. I was in a single room on the ground floor, very clean with all the facilities I needed, shower, tea making items and television. My first night was a bit noisy with the couple in the ajoining room and the ones above, but that was the only night. Some people don't have consideration for others as I have found with being in various hotels over the years.
We had a lovely breakfast each morning served by a lovely attentive waitress and we also got the same waitress at night to serve us the lovely delicious food. She was very polite, nothing was too much bother if we asked for anything and she took an interest in how we had enjoyed our day around Jersey. The evening meal was in our holiday package, but if we had had to pay for it the £12.50 price it was very reasonable. For the amount of food that one got, I would have had to pay at least £20-25 for the same where I live locally, and that's for just a two course.
All the meals we had were lovely, breakfast and dinner and the freshness of the salads which I had most evenings was out of this world.
Mary who ran the hotel was also most helpfull and attentative, nothing too much bother, if needed.
I really enjoyed staying at the Runnymeade on this my first visit to the beautiful island of Jersey. Hope to return in the future.

Room Tip: Maybe if you want a quieter area away from the street which passes in front of the hotel, I see that...

First impressions ,little bit dated, especially bar area, although Portuguese batman John made up for that he is a real character .we had a basic double bedroom in the garden area, very clean ,plenty of hot water more than adequate ,bathroom bit dated ,but clean and practical for what we paid, value for money...breakfasts well served by friendly staff, didn't stay for dinner but saw what was being eaten each evening,it looked very good...
What really makes this hotel the best around is Mary ...who is truly an angel, very efficient ,friendly and very professional ,proving you don't need a 5 star building, but, real people who care....would definitely recommend it for that reason alone

Room Tip: Didn't see all the rooms ,we had garden room, felt like a small apartment with its own sitting ar...

Having read a few negative comments previously posted, all I have to comment on them is people are hard to please.
This hotel is in a great location with easy access to beach and town centre. The hotel on Website is 3 star when arrived at hotel Jersey tourism gave a 2s, it was far better than that. I have stayed at supposed 4 st in other places and the Runnymede has much higher standards. We booked B & B and had a few evening meals the food was brilliant and ample cereal full cooked breakfast and toast, not continental. The evening meals were 3 coarse and with varied choice. Mary and her team are great and offer exceptional service and extremely helpful nothing is a problem. It has a great outdoor area at the back which is quite tranquil .Would definitely return to this hotel

Room Tip: Stayed in room 9 which over looks the garden area

This hotel was a lovely experience for us. Spotlessly clean and very friendly staff. An older hotel but this did nothing to distract from it. Close to the sea and a short walk to the town centre. We did B & B and the breakfast was excellent. Manageress Mary O'Neill was kindness and help itself. Overall an excellent experience.
