“An Honest Opinion”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 July 2011

We booked the Apartment on the basis of previous reviews and either our expectations are exceptionally high or the standard accepted by others is particularly low. The room faced the road and we were pleased to see that we had a patio door and a large terrace, unfortunately on the right had side were four wheelie waste bins used by the entire complex and had people continually walking back and forth in front of our patio. To the front, as a convenient place to lock their bikes to, we had a bike park, again continually accessed by all and sundry. To crown it all on the left hand side we had the cigarette ash box screwed to the wall which meant for the best part of the day there were several people standing there smoking and talking and therefore the Terrace was unusable as were the patio doors so we were left with a room with little ventilation in which to cook and live.

A problem also arose with traffic and noise. Facing the road we had the continual traffic for what can only be described as a 'rat run' on top of which on several occasions up to 4.30am we had the delights of the drunks, the singing and throwing about of the wheelie bins.

The sales literature makes little play or in fact or provides any help with regard to parking, we realised this late into the booking and managed to get parking at an additional charge for most of the holiday outside the apartments, what they do not tell you is that there are only four slots for eleven apartments and that the nearest public car park is a quarter of a mile away, no parking is allowed in the street so even loading and unloading is difficult.

The specification of the internal layout and finishes is particularly poor, the kitchen in the corner of the small lounge comprised of a sink, cooker, fridge and wall cupboard. The utensils clearly came from a local jumble sale and the glasses ranged from one pint mug to a couple of 'give away' glasses and a number of odd wine glasses. We had to by our own. Incidentally, the cooker only half worked and saucepan handles were falling off.

The apartment comprised of a bedroom, bathroom and kitchen/lounge so if four people occupied the apartment using the sofa bed in the lounge/kitchen to sit down in the evening and watch television, two of the guests would have to sit on dining chairs or the floor.

As you can see I would not recommend this property.

We stayed here in June 2011. The apartments are not much to look at but they are a good base for exploring Jersey. The staff were really nice and housekeeping came every day we were there. They were very accommodating of our baby daughter - providing a travel cot, a highchair and a baby bath. Our apartment was on the 2nd floor which wasn't ideal and also the apartments themselves are up stairs so not great for people with mobility difficulties or pushchairs! The kitchen was well stocked with pots/pans/trays/utensils so ideal for the self-caterer. Overall a pleasant stay but would certainly benefit from a refurb.

The Panama Apartments are very central with a short walk to the town centre, the harbour, the beach and the bus station. The apartments are very comfortable and very well equipped, a great place to relax after a hard day's sight-seeing and shopping.

The manageress and staff are very friendly and obliging. We would definitely go back to the Panama.

If you really do want to go to Jersey, then for self cateing accommodation you could not do better than the Panama Apartments apart from the fact that they have severely limited car parking, so a hire car is a major problem finding a space to put it in when not in use. The whole of Jersey is a parking problem anyway, which makes a hire car problematic, as the local authorities have not taken visitors & tourists into their traffic planning ideas. Yes the bus system is good, but a hire car would have been better. Panama apartments are clean and friendly, with no frills, but that suited us fine. The manageress was helpful and the cleaning staff were efficient and cheerful.

Jersey itself was a bit of a disappointment, as we had always felt it was a bit like Gibraltar ... a duty free haven. Not so. In fact pipe tobaccco was TWICE the cost of buying it here in the UK !!! There is only one tobacconist selling pipe tobacco on the island ! A bottle of gin was more expensive than at home too. The restrictive politically correct smoking policy on the whole island was also a disappointment. The only things worth seeing are the War Tunnels, which are very professionally done, and the Durrell Wildlife Park.

I'll be going to Gibraltar in future for the "continental but still British" feel, as there the duty free is still going, and I can stll have a pint and a smoke of my pipe at the same time, which is what the UK used to be like before the politically correct brigade took over.

As I said, if you really MUST go to Jersey then you will not be disappointed with the Panama Apartments

We have just come back from Jersey, today, we stayed at the Panama Apartments Green St St Helier, It was basic ,clean and comfortable it suited us very well, and it was easy to use the cooker and I didnt expect salt and pepper to be there,it was self catering ,shop nearby was expensive. Only downside was parking, cost more in parking tickets than petrol we had to park in multi storey in Green St,( free from 5pm to 8am and all day Sun which helped a bit) Not a cheap holiday but we enjoyed it very much, weather was brilliant.

Family of 4 staying in The Panama Apartments, St Helier. No problems with the Panama - basic, clean, self-catering apartments. The only downside, there was no balcony. We’d really have liked somewhere to sit outside on an evening, especially as Jersey does not have a continental attitude to families. We found the pubs of St Helier “family unfriendly”. Unlike most of Europe where parents and children of all ages can spend relaxed evenings eating and drinking until the early hours of the morning, Jersey is worse than England for accommodating families. Under 18s are not allowed in bars after 9 o’clock, (7 o’clock in some places) even when drinking soft drinks with parents. We had to forget family evenings out except for the occasions when we shelled out for restaurants, none of which were cheap! There were a couple of fast food outlets, which weren’t our scene. Pub meals were not generally available on an evening. We thought our luck was in when we found the Cock and Bottle serving food, however as soon as we’d sat down at an outside table the staff threw us out - no under 18s after 7 o’clock! We felt this was a bit excessive as our “kids” are aged 17 and 14 - hardly babies! I guess the Cock and Bottle just didn’t want our business! We had a Chinese takeaway from Simon’s instead - they do a nice selection of set meals, which are excellent value for money.

The good thing about Jersey is there are so many places to visit. Elizabeth Castle was within walking distance though we had to go over to it on the amphibious ferry because the tide was in. We could have spent the whole day there, in fact father and son did but mother and daughter wanted to see the Battle of the Flowers in the afternoon so we left earlier than we would have liked. The Battle of the Flowers was a sensory overload - a colourful carnival of flowers, music and dancing.

The Panama Apartments are ten minutes walk from the bus station where we could catch buses all over the island for £1.50 adults and 50p children and students. Our favourite days out were Mont Orgueil Castle at Gorey, the beach at St Brelades, the beach at Plemont with its caves and rock pools, and the War Tunnels. There is a spectacular walk between Greve de Lecq and Devil’s Hole, with some stunning views from the cliff path. Though we went on a Monday so we didn’t get to see Greve de Lecq Barracks because they were closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. And after we’d walked the 2 mile cliff path walk we found Devil’s Hole closed too because the path was unsafe but we only found out after we’d made the steep descent – why wasn’t there a notice at the top of the path? Perhaps it gives the locals a good laugh!

Overall, Jersey was an enjoyable experience but certainly not “Europe without the Euro” as advertised. We’d go again as a couple. As for next year’s family holiday it’ll be Greece or Italy where the children are welcome too!
