“Lovely Dinner”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 August 2014

This was our third and final restaurant on our Michelin star tour of Jersey.
We had dinner from the a la carte menu, not tasting, and thoroughly enjoyed some very well cooked and put together dishes.
Service was excellent - they'd remembered it was our anniversary that night.
But ambience was just not quite there. I think we weren't helped by a table of 8 who were dressed in jeans and t-shirts, and making quite a lot of noise - just not quite what you'd hope for in this restaurant.
The bar though is fantastic, and well worth a pre and post dinner drink.

“Great food”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 August 2014

This should have been five stars excellent but there is something bugging me about the whole experience.

The food was undoubtedly wonderful. We had the land and sea tasting menu and were very impressed - the Pistachio and Olive Oil cake was excellent.

I'm not sure that there is one thing that has made me only give 4 stars but a combination of a few little things. We had a drink on the terrace before we went into the hotel and after going to the bar and being told to take a seat where a waiter would take my order, I became invisible for ten minutes. Staff cleaned tables around me and got drinks for other tables but completely ignored me to the extent that it wasn't just unprofessional, it was quite rude.

When we went to the dining room the reception from the maitre d' was nice but the atmosphere wasn't quite right and I can't put a finger on it but felt that I needed to wisper through out dinner!

There are no major problems here, hence my four stars, we just didn't quite enjoy it as much as we thought we should!

“Deserves more local support”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 July 2014

We arrived for a lunch reservation on a Saturday and were surprised that there were only 2 other diners in the restaurant, therefore the ambiance was a little subdued. Despite this, the food and the service were without fault with professional staff and a jovial manager.

Our only criticism was being charged for chocolates/petit fours which were delivered with our coffees without ordering them. Having been to many fine dining restaurants, such items are usually complimentary and although we paid without a fuss one would have expected to have been advised that the unordered chocolates served with our coffees had a price tag.

“........a place of two halves”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 July 2014

Firstly, the food was exceptional and beautifully presented but then this is a Michelin starred restaurant. But when paying those prices the overall experience is equally important and this is where this restaurant fails. The atmosphere, or rather lack of, is the major fault. The restaurant is at the front of the Grand Jersey Hotel and everyone walking past into the hotel can look in through the open venetian blinds so if you are seated near the window you feel a little "on display". The very dreary decoration in colours that can only be described as puce, grunge or worst create a dismal feel and the sort of brown tablecloth does nothing to show the colours and presentation of the food. Service was good, but again the staff seem to be allowed to interpret their own standard of dress so it was difficult to know who was who, especially as no one introduced themselves as the sommelier. It may also have been nice if the chef had popped up to the restaurant to say a few words to diners as there were only eight people dining that night. We enjoyed for most part the food but for a much better experience we would go back to Ormer.
