“Great all round place to stay!”
Reviewed 12 April 2008

Friendly hotel with great view from our balcony (room 15) of the town and a partial sea view. The sea view was only £3pppn extra!

Great value for money.

Short walk to the bars, restuarants and harbour.

Lovely english breakfast, and you had the choice of what you wanted to eat.

The room was a good size with tea/coffee facility, en suite, safe and plenty of storage to hang or fold clothes.

The only minor problem was the lack of parking, but street parking is available near by...but will probably hard to find spaces in peak season.

Perfect for anyone of all ages...as long as they can manage steps.

  • Liked — The great central location....but still very quite
  • Disliked — Not much parking

The Mountview is a two star, 31-room hotel in St John’s Road, St Helier, about five minutes’ walk from the nearest shops, pubs and cafes, ten minutes from the sea front and main shopping centre, and fifteen from the bus terminus next to Liberation Square. The hotel has a lounge/bar, where bar snacks can be purchased in the early evening, a reasonable size breakfast room, and an outside ‘courtyard’ patio where the smokers gather, as all the rooms are non-smoking.

The rooms are average size, quite smart, as are the bathrooms. There’s plenty of hanging and drawer space, a hairdryer (in the bedside cabinet – not the obvious place), a small TV with mainly terrestrial channels, and tea and coffee making facilities. Bathroom towels were replaced every day. Although obviously recently refurbished, from our experience the rooms seem to suffer from a lack of maintenance – the main light in our first room didn’t work until we asked for it to be fixed (a rather obvious fault, I would have thought), and on our third day I unlocked the door, pulled the key out, and the lock came with it! Being a Bank Holiday, there was nothing that could be done, so we changed rooms, only to find that the lobby light of the new room was not working, and the internal door lock catch was missing. More TLC required for the rooms.

Booking the required three rooms for the six of us was easy – directly with the hotel by email. I informed the hotel that we would be arriving early, due to our flight times, and asked if we could leave our bags somewhere safe. We actually arrived at 9 o’clock on a Saturday morning, were warmly greeted by the receptionist (Debbie, I think her name was), and were promptly given our room keys – most impressive. Likewise, we had requested late checkouts on our last day, and were allowed to keep our rooms until 6pm for a charge of £10 per room – bargain! Just a tip on the rooms – avoid those at the front if you are a light sleeper – apart from the occasional road noise, there are guests returning late at night noisily negotiating the door entry system (reception is closed late evening) and the dustbins are emptied around 6am.

Breakfast is a good spread, with orange juice, grapefruit segments and prunes, a good choice of cereals, and a waitress-served full English. Tea, coffee, toast and marmalade are brought to the table. All fine, but it’s sometimes difficult if you depart from the standard; for example, it took me three attempts one morning to get a full English without beans and with a soft egg.

The hotel is situated part of the way up a hill, within easy strolling distance of all that St Helier offers, which is mainly a financial centre with some holiday facilities. There are a number of nice restaurants – try the Vecchio Milano near the shopping centre, and La Cantina, on the road down to the Grand Jersey Hotel, just up from the sea front. Both will be about £30 per person for a three-course meal with wine, a little more than I would expect to pay in England. We booked an all day island tour (Tantivy) at the hotel, at £17.50 per person, and this was most enjoyable (Tantivy also do a range of other trips, depending on the day of the week, and the coach collects you from the hotel). On another day, we bought Island Explorer tickets (£6 each), which allow you unlimited travel for a day on four routes which have stops near all the tourist attractions, as well as travel on the normal Connex buses. These all leave from the bus terminus near Liberation Square.

Just a few words about the ambiance in Jersey – no graffiti, no litter, no hoodies. Local people who are offering help almost before you realise you need it. Motorists who stop to let you cross the road even though there’s no pedestrian crossing. Bus drivers with whom you can have a laugh and a joke, and who wish you a pleasant day as though they mean it. Even the bunch of drunken girls on the bus back to town one evening, singing at the tops of their voices, apologised for the noise as we got off the bus – a different style of binge drinking! Living near London, I haven’t experienced this type of society for a long time, and it was really refreshing to know it still exists.

We travelled to Jersey by air, flying BMI from Heathrow. Both flights were on time, checking in on line is fairly easy (and is recommended to avoid the queues at the airport) and the A319 Airbuses used were smart and comfortable. Jersey airport is refreshingly calm on the return journey.

Would we go back to Jersey? Yes, but not for a while. Four days was enough to see most of what we wanted, and a longer holiday on the beach might not be so successful if the weather was as bad as we have had this summer. But I might go back in a few years to see whether Jersey society has ‘developed’ any nearer to what we have in London….

The cheapest hotel on the list but really good for the money. Clean rooms, easy walk to town. Friendly staff and good breakfast.

  • Liked — Not over priced
  • Disliked — The lift, but quite novel as old style (it worked fine though)

We have just returned from a 4 night stay at the Mountview Hotel and we had a great time. The room was lovely and bright with plenty of storage. Bathroom was very clean. All the staff were very friendly and helpful and breakfast was very good, plenty of everything and all served quickly and hot. No complaints about anything and our thanks to the staff for making our stay so comfortable.
