“We were made to feel special”
Reviewed 25 October 2011

I have just had a very short stay in the lovely old Hotel de France. It was one night, for two friends, coincidentally during half term on an autumn break tariff. But we were made to feel as is if we were special and favoured guests. The reception staff were excellent; recommending restaurants, make a bookings, drawing a map for us, sorting out an iron etc. Our room was fine, nothing special but everything you expect in a large hotel, and we did face to sea. The pool and spa area were really good and free to all guests. The hotel had character, though now hidden by an enormous concrete medical centre / car park, you felt as if you had travelled back a hundred years.

Just been to a conference at this hotel.
Located in a built up area of St helier on a hillside.
Room allocated was on floor 6 and all of the odd number rooms on this floor face a brick wall and are very dark. They have a little balcony but receive no daylight. When I asked about the room type I was told that they were standard rooms allocated to any guest not just conference delegates.
I would not wish to stay in one of these rooms for longer than the two nights of the conference.

The receptionist also said " What do you expect, we are on a hill you know"
Such professionalism and charm!

Room itself was not bad and had air conditioning - necessary on that weekend of hot weather.
Rooms on the front of the hotel had no air con and delegates complained about not being unable to sleep for the heat.

I guess the hotel's reputation is for it's leisure facilities not for it's staff attitude or it's bedrooms.
Food at breakfast was OK for those who just want a full English. Otherwise not too much choice.

Average property in an average location.
Wouldn't return.

Room Tip: Pay a lot more and get a room with a view

The pool and spa area is absolutely fantastic. Hotel room very mundane - no safe!? no fridge!? However staff very pleasant and all one could ask for at breakfast. Staff in Cafe Aroma however extremely rude. We asked to book a table for 2 and were told they didn't do bookings. We sat outside and came in when it started to get cooler. Went to sit at a table and were told very abruptly to move as it was reserved!............for a family with 5 children who did nothing but run around and create havoc. Position of hotel set way back from town so makes for peaceful sleeping.

Room Tip: Rooms are well below par for today's traveller

First time at theHDF spa -upon entering the changing rooms I was greeted by two guys washing the floor at 11am in the morning and there was water everywhere , i was told to use the cubicle to change it but this was difficult when the floors are streaming with water and hose pipes are being used-I heard various reports about the spa so i thought i would try it out myself - Very dissapointed, the spa is very open around the pool area and quite noisy, the sunloungers were uncomfortable and there is no where quiet to sit or a relax area unless you have a treatment - the treatments I had were good but the rooms were cold - overall I wouldnt rush back.....!!

Stayed at this hotel for a conference over the weekend.
Lets start with the good - bright modern reception, fair location on a hill overlooking the water and town of St Helier. The conference facilties are superb and modern, food was better than good and the staff were excellent.

My room was large bright, very clean and the bed comfortable. Yes this was the hottest weekend on history for Jersey, but with no air conditioning, no mini- bar for water etc, no safe for passport / medications / important documents and money, the hotel was far short of a modern hotel. Even 3* in say Italy have all the above.
I did find out some room have air conditioning..... alas the guest who told me this said she had to stand in the toilet to view her self in the full length mirror... Mmm planning?
Jersey is the hottest place in the UK - the hotels need to be "Hot" in terms of welcome not saunas.

Room Tip: Ask for room in the new part of the hotel with Air-con

The hotel was good and we had a large newly decorated quiet double bedroom. The breakfasts were standard hotel buffet style with plenty of choice. For us the outstanding feature of the hotel was the swimming pool and spa area, one of the best we have ever used. As mentioned by previous guests the hotel is about a 15 minute walk to St Helier although there are buses just outside the hotel and the hotel does run a shuttle bus at certain times during the day. I did not eat in the restaurants so can't comment on them. We would certainly stay there again without hesitation.

Took pot luck on a five day break and was not disappointed. From the moment we arrived we were treated well by all staff. Our bags were taken from the car to the room (very nice and comfortable) by a porter while we checked in. Food was excellent, breakfast was very good with choice to suit everyone. Spa facilities were of a high standard and the staff, under the guidance of the pool manger Andy, were most helpful. We will be returning for another pampering later in the year. This is a five star hotel which is rated four star because it is not open at Christmas. Don't let this put you off.

Room Tip: Top floor room at front for view.
