“"Long weekend break"”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 June 2013

My husband decided to surprise me with a last minute visit to Jersey for my birthday. It has been 30 years since our last visit and of course a lot had changed including the hotel we had previously used which is now a housing estate! We decided to use a Best Western as had used them before, and they didn't let us down. The Royal Hotel is located only 5 minutes from the town centre, ideal for shopping which was the purpose of this trip.

We arrived several hours before check-in and the reception staff were extremely helpful, we completed the paperwork in advance so when we returned we only had to go to our room. On returning we were advised that due to their overbooking they would upgrade our room to a suite which was very spacious and scrupulously clean and a most comfortable bed. We were not able to book into the restaurant on the first night as were fully booked, an oversight on our part but ate at the bar which had an extensive menu and very good quality. Restaurant staff excellent and friendly and when asked for recommendations on wine did not automatically choose the most expensive. Breakfast is a buffett and again the quality of ingredients very good and plentiful.

We have decided to visit again for perhaps a week next time and will definitely use this hotel again.

Stayed in the Royal for a 4 night break, was the 7th time staying there. Good value, Location excellent convenient for town centre, staff very friendly and helpful, good selection of menus in the restaurants very good value and very tasty, room very spacious and well equipped. Secure car park. Swimming pool available at sister hotel, gym available in basement.

Could not speak highly enough of hotel, will definitely stay again.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms near traffic lights on David place/stopford rd, can be noisy.

We have just had a short break here and would recommend it .From the time we arrived until our departure we found all the staff were excellent, they were friendly helpful and very efficient .
Our daughter was celebrating a birthday and as soon as our waitress found out she went out of her way to make the evening memorable and special . We all thank her very much for that .The champagne which arrived as a surprise was a really lovely gesture. So a special thanks to Simone . Also Beatrice who like other staff members, whose names i did not get always made us feel so welcome,
The rooms were spotless, and the food in both restaurant and bar was great. Hope to return .

We booked this Hotel to celebrate our 44th Wedding Anniversary and was pleased that we did.
We arrived at this Hotel early evening after a delayed flight from London Gatwick, the Reception Staff were very efficient and friendly, we had booked a standard Double Room and was told that they had upgraded us to the 1st floor as a kind gesture, the room was beautiful 4 poster bed, plenty of drawer space, the bathroom was out of this world, had a whirlpool bath, the door by the dressing table opened out to a beautiful terrace, all the staff in the Hotel were brilliant, Reception, Breakfast Staff and Dining room staff and Housekeeping staff. We had a lovely meal in the Restaurant to Celebrate our Anniversary and were given Champagne to celebrate this ocassion. The Bar 27 was great to have a few drinks in the evening, the staff again were brilliant, I cannot praise this Hotel enough. This is one of the best Hotels we have stayed in. Thank you for making our Wedding Anniversary a memorable ocassion.
Will we return- yes we would like to go back later in the year.

I've stayed in this hotel off and on over 8 years - it seems to be the desired hotel of my company's accommodation team. If you're only here for a few days it is a very nice hotel. Unfortunately if you're here on business staying a week or more then the problems begin to show. The first issue is that it's not on the sea front or in the centre of St Helier. It does have parking, which is rare for any building in Jersey let alone a hotel, but if you're on foot then it's more than half a mile walk to the centre of town and about a mile to the sea front. The better restaurants are towards the sea front. BW Royal does have a restaurant but mid-week this is empty (they also have a more sociable bar with good food). Also a solo diner with the waiter hovering around you makes for a very uncomfortable experience. I got it twice, as the same waiter was there for breakfast and because I was first there I again experienced him standing 3 feet away trying to look busy but instead watching me. Sometimes you just want him to sod off and leave you alone. Sounds really nasty and it's not that I'm not a morning person - but I'm just not used to someone standing over me when I eat. Breakfast is one area where this hotel has skimped. Don't get me wrong, the food is brilliantly cooked and the range of cold breakfast food is great. However they used to serve cooked breakfasts as a buffet ie help yourself. Now it's cooked to order and where I was using the breakfast to last me all day, an extra bit of bacon could have been better. So a little cost-cutting in the restaurant has tainted the breakfast experience over the years. The worst element of this hotel however has to be the very very outdated decor. There has been no change of any decor in the public areas in the 8 years I've been visiting Jersey and maybe longer than that. If the decor is modern and of a high standard then why change? Unfortunately the burgandy carpets throughout and the similarly coloured wallpaper becomes depressing after 48 hours stay. Of all decor issues however, the one thing that stands out is the very strange idea of the management team that guests want to look at photographs of 'famous' guests that have stayed there or have visited as part of a function. We have for example a photo of Chris Eubank, circa 1990. Remember him? Probably not unless you're from the UK. He was a boxer. There's also a photo of Prince Andrew, again circa 1990 (the hair colour and the fact he's now around 3 stone heavier gives it away). Ok, Jersey is a British island but off the coast of France. So why do they think we want to see or know that a Z-list celebrity visited the hotel some 20 years ago? There's even a photo of a man who first visited the hotel in ?1960's and stayed there again for his anniversary 30 years later. So what? I've stayed there for my anniversary but nobody wants my mug on the wall. Maybe on the dartboard. The management seem to be grasping at the tedious of links to these 'celebs' in the hope it would make the hotel more popular. However there's nothing on their website about these people so the only way you'll see these photos and know they stayed there is if you're already staying there yourself and you've seen Prince Andrew gurning at you for the umpteenth time as you exit the main door on your way to the half mile walk to town. The only other thing of note is that there is no pool or gym complex - something you get at some of the other hotels in this price range in St Helier. As an older building I guess you could argue that a pool couldn't be built. However a gym is nothing more than a converted room and would be much more of an attraction than photos of retired boxers. You could even forgive the dated decor. They give you free use of a nearby pool and leisure complex, but I've only just seen this on their website. They certainly don't tell you about it when you check in and there are no other adverts for it in the public areas otherwise I would have made use of this.

Room Tip: Had to mark pool and spa as terrible because the hotel doesn't tell you about the use of these f...

ManagerJersey, Manager at Best Western Royal Hotel, responded to this review, 14 June 2013
Thank you for your review and long term custom. You stayed in February, as stated, so will not be aware that we have updated much accommodation at the Royal in recent months. We have uploaded new images today of some updated bedrooms for your interest onto our own hotel website. Please feel free to request an updated bedroom. Equally, areas of our reception have received an update in recent months too with more to follow. We have invested very significantly into the Royal over many years and will continue to do so.

Location: We are located in the heart of St. Helier and are the closest hotel to the new Millennium Town Park, the Central town park in Jersey's capital. Nowhere in St Helier is far and the high street is only a very short walk away. Many of the best restaurants are near to the Royal, with two new openings in recent months close to the hotel. We are situated away from the night club areas of the town which is an advantage to some guests.

Catering: We serve a full buffet cooked breakfast for the vast majority of the year - apart from the core of the winter months. In parts of February, when you stayed, the hotel is quieter and breakfasts may be cooked to order. Respectfully, this is not a cost cutting measure but ensures freshness. Portions are not controlled as such; larger portions are easily requested. Your comments in respect of staff members serving will be discussed with our team. 'Seasons', our AA Rosette restaurant has served up to 100 diners per night in recent weeks - so demand will depend on the time of your stay but our own restaurant makes a popular choice.

Leisure Facilities: Use of the indoor leisure facilities, available at our sister Monterey Hotel, is advised at check-in as is the fact that we do have a small hotel gym available on the lower ground floor. This information is routinely relayed as a part of our guest check-in procedure on arrival.

Finally, we believe that we are a traditional hotel with much character. Evolution of the hotel must take account of the hotel’s rich history and we will continue to take the hotel forward whilst being sensitive to this character and listening to all customer feedback.

Thank you for your views as a longer term guest and we hope to welcome you back at some point in the future.
