“Not able to see out of bedroom window”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 August 2014

The hotel was clean and pleasant, and our bedroom was also clean and well decorated. The window however was about 7 foot off the floor and it was very disappointing. The breakfasts were well cooked with plenty of choice but most days the cooked part wasnt usually very warm. We were with a large party and on the last evening we were able to use the function room and a nice buffet was provided. The staff were always pleasant and helpful. The only reason I wouldnt give 4 rating is because of thebedroom window which spoilt the trip a bit for me, If I was there only holiday I would have complained but gathered the hotel was full and so we were unable to move.

Room Tip: Do not stay in room 24 unless youre a giant

Went to this hotel last weekend to see the show they have on for the summer - the meal was good, the hotel itself was fine - everyone seemed pretty friendly - the show was fabulous in fact we enjoyed it that much we are going again next month

After reading the last couple of reviews I was seriously worried as to what our room etc would be like. Was pleasantly surprised, I booked a regular double room, which overlooked the car park. The room was on the small side, but had recently been refurbished. Spotlessly clean with a very clean bathroom and great shower with lots of hot water. Toiletries were provided and towels were changed every day without us throwing them on the floor.

The bed was really comfortable and again very clean and made every day. Tea and coffee and biscuits were also provided every day.

Breakfast was good with great choice of both continental and full English breakfast.

We ate a couple of times in the hotel for evening meal. Apparently a new chef had recently joined the hotel and the food was good, although I did choose wrongly on the first evening! The staff are so willing to help and service is great, if you want something extra you only have to ask.

The nearest shop is out of the hotel and turn left, we went the wrong way first. You can walk into The town but the buses are efficient. We bought a 3day bus pass and hopped on and off all the time. We were only here for 5 days and would come back for longer as there were lots of things we didn't manage to see.

The location of the hotel is not in its favour. It fronts onto a busy road which lies between it and waterfront. It isn't Ommaroo's fault that the Jersey town planners have given no thought to the attractiveness of their waterfront- it is a concrete wasteland populated by drunks (of which Jersey has MANY- loads of pubs in St Helier and all seem to be very busy). No greenery anywhere. Construction right up to the sea wall. Power station. Hideous tower blocks. So, on approaching the hotel, I was not impressed at all. Depressed actually. What kind of hideous place was this tax haven?!

The hotel looks like one of those tired Victorian B&B places on the economically depressed south coast of England.
Good points:
1. the staff. capable. polite, neat. attentive/professional. helpful
2. the lounge looking over the sea was bright.
3. the mattress and pillows were great. Suprisingly. (I mean- a real surprise, for which I was grateful)

Bad points
1. shower was dreadful in that the hot and cold controls did not work. They worked out of the bath mixer tap, but pull the dated little thingy upwards to convert it into a shower...no way. Boiling hot. Also- nasty shower curtain made bath even narrower- ie turn around to move the scalding water and the horrible thing touches you.
2. The bathroom is not worth discussing except to say it all needs ripping out. Grout, rough wall, bodge job DIY really.
3. decor of room- hilariously awful formica covered (where not chipped) furniture. A TV I havent seen since last century! It wasnt a refurb room but it was on the top floor and had a view of the sea. Also a view of drunks swaying around the benches opposite.

Breakfast was adequate. Dinner was surprisingly good but the dining room was over-lit and needed some judiciously placed palms etc to break the enormous space up.
One felt very exposed and hence not very relaxed.

Overall. The hotel was okay but not pretty, not romantic, not in a nice setting.

This was my first and last stay in Jersey. DO NOT VISIT. It is utterly pointless- it was full of fat, boozy smokers with dreadful accents. Havent seen such an unhealthy population for a long time. It isnt French. It isnt a good representation of the UK. There is a Coutts bank next to Poundland. St Helier is a dive. It is on a par with Plymouth.

Maybe Guernsey or Alderney are better? I am not interested in finding out as Jersey was a massive let down. Traffic-ridden concrete-covered cultural wasteland.

Room Tip: go elsewhere...like France.

My Room looked NOTHING like the images on the website, the bath was DIRTY and there were NO complimentary toiletries, no air conditioning , The window fell off its hinges as I opened it, to get some air!
The lift just about fits one person, and there are a LOT of STAIRS
I accidentally walked in to the kitchen, and the view was the reason i didn't eat anything here!
A BIG DISAPPOINTMENT

The hotel proudly announces that they have been family run since 1970. In effect, not much has changed since then. Stepping into the hotel is like stepping back in time. The decor is straight out of the 70s. I didn't think such hotels still existed! The service is top notch - a young team from across Europe do a very good job with attentive and friendly service. Our bags were carried up to the room on arrival, and we were made to feel most welcome. Room was comfortable but in need of renovation. The shower was not so much a power shower as a pathetic drip of water. Toilet flush worked intermittently. We had dinner one night in the restaurant. Again, the food was from a bygone era - duck à l'orange served by waiters in bow ties. On ordering beef, we were told they had run out. We therefore opted for paella. What arrived was a tasteless mush of something which had perhaps at one point been paella. It was so bad it was funny. Someone please fire the chef! Anyone who sends such things out of the kitchen should not be there in the first place. It was obvious the waiting staff knew how bad the food was. The beautiful and charming portuguese receptionist removed the wine charge from our bill by means of compensation (she deserves a special mention as an excellent team member). In short, a comfortable stay, but I implore you, avoid the absolutely horrendous school-dinner style food!

We appreciate feedback both good and for improvement, we are sorry that you did not enjoy your stay, we are a family run hotel since the 1920's and have recently carried out extensive refurbishment to include our large 160 seater restaurant, sun lounge, lounges and over half of the 82 bedrooms. We have also put in an outdoor swimming pool and are halfway through our bar refurbishment. Next year will see alot more bedroom refurbishments.
I think it is a little unfair to say that we are stuck in a timewarp! Our food has always been of a very high standard but we are aware there was a problem that evening, we have been going through a change of kitchen staff and had hoped this would be seamless. Perhaps you would like to contact me (Spencer) directly and we can offer you a free overnight stay in addition to the bottle of wine you were given. We hope to see you again in the future.

We were looking for a last minute break in mid-July and found a reasonably priced trip on Expedia for 4 nights staying here!

You get what you pay for......it's clean, the staff are very helpful and the breakfast is actually pretty good....providing the usual choices from fruit etc through to the full English.

It's opposite a beach.....which is not the best when compared with St Brelade's and beyond the Lido you have a wonderful view of the power station....

The one recommendation we would make is do not stay in this hotel when temperatures are high ......we stayed in room 32A which overlooks the pool, and it was the most unbearably hot hotel room I've ever stayed in.....no air conditioning and we struggled to get a fan from the staff...which when we did, only circulated warm air......sleeping was difficult and as such our days were spent full of lethargy!

Room Tip: Not one that gets the sun most of the day......they become incredibly hot and have no air conditioni...
