“Fantastic hotel!”
Reviewed 27 July 2014 via mobile

I have just returned from a weekend stay at the Grand for my friends hen party. The trip was booked months in advance with the expert help of Alexandra in reservations, she was extremely helpful and made booking a trip for 23 very easy! We ate in the brasserie and the food was fantastic, service again was top notch, Gabriel was super waiter! The hotel could not do enough for us, they really made the stay very special. The spa is beautiful and the treatments were amazing, the rooms are spacious with very very comfy beds! They also have great air con which was very much needed this weekend. The terrace bar in front of the hotel is also a wonderful place to have a drink and a bite to eat, the staff were happy to seat all 23 of us! We also had a private room set up for cocktail making, which was fantastic fun and again the service was superb! Breakfast is amazing! I really cannot express how great all the staff at the hotel were, I've never stayed anywhere with such fantastic service! A big thank you to you all for making it a really memorable weekend!

Just spent 8 nights at this hotel and it would have been great except for our first night in a sub-standard room:

First night we were checked into room 211 and straight away it was clear the room was very much below expectations - considering this is billed as a 5* hotel. A really tired room with shabby furniture, scuffed walls and a distinctly unpleasant smell - by no stretch of the imagination a 5* room. Straight way got in touch with reception who offered to show us the only other available room in the hotel at the time - which was in exactly the same condition!

Next morning awoke to the air-conditioning unit leaking water onto the carpet so got in touch with reception again who were able to show us room 123 - this was much more like what we were expecting and thankfully we were able to spend the remaining nights in this room and we were happy with it.

We spoke to and overheard other guests who were unhappy with their rooms for various reasons and therefore we could not recommend this hotel due to the inconsistency of room quality - if we would have had to spend all 8 nights of our stay in room 211 we would have checked out and demanded a refund.

Otherwise this is a nice hotel in a great location with EXCELLENT staff throughout ( the staff are currently this hotels best asset) but some rooms are in desperate need of a refurb to justify the 5* rating.

This hotel is overpriced, the room was dark, drab and dated. Beds wobbled like a jelly, pillows were lumpy with no filling in the middle. Lots of bird poo on the outside of window and the same on the inside frame where the window was opened, hadn't been cleaned in years. Base of bed cover was so faded where it faced the window so it had been on there for years as the window wasn't that close. Lifted the cover as it was on the ground and the base was stained. There was a "decorative" cushion on the bed, I didn't notice the first night as I was tired but in the morning when I moved it from the chair back to the bed it was splattered with horrible looking stains , it was threadbare and faded. I was on my way to reception with it when "the management" (someone in a suit) asked what the problem was so it was replaced by another faded one but a bit cleaner.Bathroom tap was loose, toiled flush button located where the lid touched it so it was like a bidet. Loads of dirty marks on the walls. Avoid third floor rooms as apparently some of the lower rooms have been renovated.Meanest thing ever only one pack of bikkies and no feminine hygiene bags, was told they don't supply them. Avoid room 319. Staff were LOVELY and so polite. It's been up for sale for 3 years and not sold yet. Also says no hen parties and there was at least 24 girls there and some lads in another party. Bonus was air conditioning as it was hot, Jersey is lovely though.Public areas look grand though.

Before we stayed at the hotel, we checked the reviews on Trip Advisor and very recently there has been a wide variation in how people feel about the hotel, which did cause us some concern. From our experience I can now see why.

We stayed four nights and had a room overlooking the bay and castle. We paid an additional amount for a sea view.

So what did think about our stay? The staff were welcoming and helpful, the public areas were pleasant enough and the outside bar was a good place to sit and watch the world go by. (however, service here was a little unpredictable). Breakfast was good, a warm welcome from the staff member organising tables was appreciated and the organisation of breakfast was very good, staff created an efficient and relaxed service.

So far so good. However, the bedroom was where the less satisfactory aspects of the hotel came to light. The room did have a good view of the castle, was of a good size but the main road in front of the hotel was busy and noisy, making it too noisy to have the windows open when sleeping. The bathroom lacked any feeling of a room being in a 5* hotel, it was old fashioned and not particularly elegant. What made the whole experience worse was that the ceiling creaked loudly when the guests in the room above took any steps in their room. Additionally the music from the breakfast room was overly loud on Sunday morning which added to the less than restful expereince.

We did say we were unhapy about the room after the second day, and in fairness, for our last night we were offered to be moved to a suite. We did not take up the offer as for one night it seemed too much of an upheaval. We were then offered a fee bottle of wine, which never appeared!

Having stayed at the hotel I can inderstand the wide variation in review ratings. My main concern is that the hotel charges 5* rates for rooms which are no more than 3* quality at best, based on our expereince. Either the hotel upgrades rooms that have the above shortcomings to 5* quality or they reduce the room rate for these rooms. I have stayed in many 5* hotels around the world, and this 5* hotel does not compare favourably to these.

Having said all the above, the stay was not unpleasant, more that it was not good value for money.

Room Tip: Although the sea view is lovely, maybe a room overlooking the park to the side of the hotel on the t...

Value for money this is not. Small room with a terrible cheap matress and pokey shower room. The health spa is a maze of narrow passages and stairs. The splendidly situated outside bar has the worst service this side of Wormwood Scrubs. Breakfast was good with very attentive staff. Stay at the Radisson.

We stayed at the Grand Jersey for four nights. The staff are lovely and the service was excellent but the room was a great disappointment at almost £250 a night. It was noisy with music from the restaurant, traffice noise from the street, the sound of pepole walking around in the room above and the work at a nearby building site all disturbing the peace and quiet.

The public areas are well appointed and the breakfast was great but there is no way this is a five star hotel.

Room Tip: Don't stay in room 101

We treated ourselves to afternoon tea here whilst on holiday. Sorry to say not as good as some of the hotels at home. When I have been to afternoon tea before we have always been asked if we would like more of anything and have always come away with a box of unbeaten cakes. This is not the case at The Grand sadly. However the price is reasonable, but would not bother going again.
