“Another enjoyable stay”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 October 2011

We're locals and stayed here for a night when friends were having their wedding reception at the hotel. We've stayed several times before, and as always this was a pleasant stay. The dinner was very good considering it was mass-catering, the room was faultless and the breakfast (which we had on the terrace) was very good. Service was excellent throughout.

I have just returned from a two night stay at the hotel which was a business trip. My experience of the hotel was excellent from the quality of the room, the business facilities and the food the night we stayed in the hotel to eat.

The free wifi was very good, fast and available throughout the hotel - something which you often cannot say about wifi in hotels were you have to pay for the pleasure.

The staff were friendly and helpful.

Yes this is a modern hotel so looks very much like any other modern hotel - however I could not fault it.

We had a spacious room overlooking the marina and castle. The hotel is just a level short walk from the town centre yet very quiet. Both breakfast and a la carte evening meal were of a high standard. Also, the terrace overlooking the waterfront is just the place for a glass of wine while watching the sun go down! Would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Would recommend paying the extra for a waterfront facing room.

When I was booked in to stay at the Radisson Blu in St. Helier for a few days I was a bit excited. I had heard good stories about this place and as a bit of a fan of the more contemporary style of hotel it looked like it might be right up my street. After a bit of a frantic journey, not helped by the narrow roads on the island which can be terrifying to anyone more used to wide open spaces I was relieved to finally pull up in the car park and grab my bags to check in.

And it was here that the anticipation began to slip away to a slightly empty feeling. Did I say I like contemporary style? Well, not when it's anonymous bordering on the jarring, and the building on first sight doesn't really make you feel welcome at all. It smacks of a committee design, everything done via escalation and sign-off, and the void of a personal stamp - this is us in Jersey guys! - made it just feel rather efficient, focused, but not characterful. The situation of the hotel doesn't help, being placed in a half done retail park consisting of a bar, a cinema and a KFC within reclaimed land that looks like the claimant had second thoughts a while back and lost interest, but in fairness that's not the fault of the Radisson crew. But the facade and large, joyless reception is a lost opportunity for the chain to give the visitor a cuddle. It needs an interior stylee person to get their crayons out again and have another bash.

It's a theme that runs to the staff as well. Not once could I fault their professionalism. Or their excellent efficiency. Damn that word! But the corporate drive to train staff to get the job done quickly and effortlessly seems to have barged any chance of the people being, well, individuals, firmly out the fire exit. So you feel served but not cossetted, hosted but not mosted.

To the room! And yes, it was certainly very nice. Big bed, everything worked, no effort needed to get comfy. But still that pervading efficiency nonsense envelopes you and buzzes away ever-so-quietly. And on the subject of buzzing, why on earth did I have a fly in my room every evening? Just the one, and each night it died a swift death courtesy of the daily newspaper left for me that I hadn't asked for. Maybe I was being accosted by a family of them, outraged that their relative had not returned each day only discover when they came after their sibling that there was a serial fly-killer on the loose. Their loss, 5 of them in fact.

What else to say? I rather enjoyed the food, dished up and done well in a surprisingly empty restaurant. Maybe the amount of choice of eateries on the island - no, not just the KFC - meant that most guests were eating elsewhere, but if you didn't feel like walking into town the nosh in the hotel wouldn't be a poor second choice. Breakfast was the usual European/US/Brit mix and lots of it, all in buffet style, again done well. I would imagine the gy was clean and useable too, but after pigging out each morning there was no way I was waddling down there to be humiliated on a cross-trainer.

Overall, the Radisson Blu in St. Helier is a hotel with a lot of good qualities and a place I would be glad to stay at again. You simply cannot fault the staff for their hard work and the the high standard the place sets on criteria such as cleanliness and food. But if you stay at this hotel in Jersey while on a break, it will be the last thing you'll remember when you look back afterwards, such is the lack of personality of the place. And on an island which is overflowing with character, it sticks out a mile.

My wife and I enjoyed a relaxing break at the Big Blu in September and we could not find any fault with our stay. Excellent Sea View of marina, extreemly comfortable beds, good size room, generous and appertizing breakfasts, modern and pleasing decor. We will be staying there again. The hotel was recommended by my son and his partner who returned this year. We took notice of other reviews and did not eat any aother meals there.

An excellent quality hotel with stunning waterfront views. Well equipped and in excellent condition. The whiff of seaweed can sometimes be detected outside, but that's just a function of the location right by the beach.

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view!

I recently stayed overnight at this hotel for one night only as I was attending a dinner at the same hotel. This was the first time I had stayed and and I was pleasantly surprised, the check in was efficient, the rooms were very spacious and clean with all amenities you would need. The bed was one of the most comfortable I have stayed in - and I am very critical !!
The breakfast was excellent and I have to say the sausage was exceptional there was a very good choice of meats, cheeses even some smoked salmon together with your traditional breakfast. Afterwards we sat outside and had a coffee on the terrace overlooking the marina even the sun was shining, would I stay here again - definately.
