“Lovely tranquil location, superb food and friendly service”
Reviewed 20 July 2013

We have stayed at the Wheatlands many times. The location is wonderful and quiet. The food from local producers is always excellent and the staff are friendly and very helpful. Nothing is too much trouble for the enthusiastic team. The rooms are dated, but comfortable and spotlessly clean. Excellent value for money and the views are fantastic.

Shock and horror is what we experienced when we approached this hotel from the rear. The sign said Guest Car Park, so we turned in. Dilapidated, ramshackle, unpainted, mouldy buildings, with the only sign saying "Reception through the Restaurant". There was no sign for "Restaurant" so we made our way round the building to a side door with a Reception sign. The building looks as if it hasn't seen a paintbrush in 50 years and the interior is dismal, dark and dingy with quite appalling burnt cooking odours. After expressing our concerns, we were shown to our "superior twin room, elegantly furnished" and if it wasn't for the fact that we were supposed to be spending two weeks here, it could possibly have been funny. This is a sitcom waiting to be made which could outdo Faulty Towers!
The awful cooking smell was overpowering even in this room two floors up and as we were now quite nauseous, we had no alternative but to leave. This has been an expensive lesson for the learning as we had not sufficiently checked out the bad reviews on Trip Advisor. The appealing thing was the golf course which we didn't bother to look at, but there's not a golf course in the world that would have made the hotel easier to bear.
We will not be taking up the owner's suggestion that if we give him £200,000 he will be able to put the hotel right, but are glad to hear that he realises just how much money needs to be spent to make it acceptable. He did tell us that the "guest car park" isn't the guest car park and "Reception" isn't Reception as these are at the front of the hotel. We didn't have a crystal ball when we arrived and it doesn't change anything anyway, but the owner is not a person to have a rational discussion with and we decided not to let it ruin our holiday. If you are seeking accommodation in a similar price bracket, check out the Old Bank House Hotel at Grouville. A world away from Wheatlands in how it should be done! If you can stretch the budget a little, Undercliff at Bouley Bay is amazing!

While we do appreciate all reviews from guests of the hotel, these nice people decided not to stay based on the paint on the outside of the building! they therefore never tasted our hospitality. So please read the reviews of those who have actually stayed here.
I spoke briefly on the phone and was asked to come back to the hotel in order to discuss with them. I jumped in my car leaving our family meal table, and got to the hotel within 12 minutes. The guests couldn't wait that long and had left.
I kindly sent a message informing the couple they would only be charged for half of their stay in order to part on good terms. This didn't work :)
I did not discuss money with them on the day, however when they returned the following day creeping around the hotel taking photographs for a formal complaint to Jersey Tourism, I did discuss (as I was asked) the cost of painting the outside of the building in a recession - approx £20k. However I do not recall asking them for the cash!
Quite clearly this was not a guest of our hotel, and quite clearly they booked a well priced hotel in February knowing they would complain and move to a higher star hotel by bartering once they arrived. They even admitted they had read other guest reviews on Trip Advisor, and knew the hotel was old and in need of refurbishment. This really does beg the question of why they booked in the first place.
REMEMBER - we are clean, have some of the best hospitality and best food in Jersey, and we are proud of what we offer at a very competitive price in these hard times.

Stayed at the Wheatlands over a long weekend, although the rooms need some refurbishment we realize that this does need cash to do and we were told by Ian (the owner) it was a work in progress!
The staff we found to be really great and superbly helpful, nothing was too much trouble. Any problems we had were very quickly sorted.
We had a good evenings entertainment with the resident golf pro!!!
Food wise we have absolutely no complaints!! Breakfast was all you could want, a varied menu and as much teat and coffee as you needed.
The only reason we have not given it 5/5 was the room refurbishments require plus more hot water!!! (in Room 10)

Had we paid £100 per room per night, I would have expected a lot more of the room. On recommendation we booked at £60 per couple B&B. The room though very dated was spotlessly clean, plenty of hot water, towels etc.. The staff and food were both exceptionally excellent and taking all into consideration, definitely can recommend! We are not Golfers but were self compelled to have a go on the Fantastic golf course under supervision of the very tolerant Golf Pro. Having got to know the staff, owners rep (Ian), golf pro and other guests by now, we are sure that everything will come up to speed very soon (also the Tariff)??? Take advantage of current pricing! Fantastic, Relaxing, Unpretentious weekend.

My second visit to this little gem in the Jersey countryside started on wet Sunday afternoon in May and while it was cold and dismal outside it was warm and comfortable inside. My room on this visit, while looking out towards St Helier and Elizabeth Castle, was nicely equipped for the business person with room to work, very comfortable bed, tea and coffee facilities, flat screen T.V, straight forward shower room that worked and had plenty of hot water.
Ian was at hand to offer a warm welcome back and his staff could not have been better, anything they could do to help, well done Ian an his Team. Let's turn to the food and this is were this little hotel absolutely scores top marks. It is wholesome, it is well cooked, it is served efficiently and it is piping hot and the choice is excellent and oh the cider is good as well. Breakfast is again without a shadow of doubt a gourmet's delight with plenty of choice to suit every pallet, my favourite this trip was the Eggs Benedict washed down with plenty of fresh coffee and the biggest and most pleasant surprise for the business person, on a budget, the rates are excellent. I have booked again for my next trip, to Jersey, in October - I recommend the Wheatlands to all, it was summer warmth on a cold wet day!

On a cold February Sunday afternoon, my first experience of the Wheatlands was a small, warm comfortable establishment with extremely friendly staff. Top marks to Ian (the owner). The evening meals were excellent and piping hot, breakfast superb variation but please serve up the toast separate with ones tea or coffee. The room I had, had just been re-decorated and was clean and comfortable but as a business traveller lacks space to work in, but does come with tea and coffee facilities. Have already booked for my next trip in May and will definitely be recommending it to other business people. An excellent small hotel with a top rate host!
