“Horrendous”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 August 2011

My family and I were going to eat a lunch here off the £!2.50 menu. However, we ended up not staying for lunch due to the awful atmosphere and the downright nasty waiters who chose to smirk and laugh when we asked how one of the dishes was cooked.

If you feel the urge to eat in a morgue with an over-pretentious menu, where the waiting staff clearly have no manners and are disrespectful then go here - if not then go to a lovely pub. Truly the worst place I have ever had the misfortune of going to eat in Guernsey.

Sorry to hear that you could not stay for lunch and actually try the food.
I can assure you that we seem to have received nothing but praise for the recent refurbishment of our property so it is difficult to see how" it felt like a Morgue"especially on a busy Saturday in August.
With our waiting team ,many of whom have been with us for some while,we should be providing polite and friendly service and I am sorry if we have not met your expectations on this occasion.
We look forward to welcoming you back should you wish to give us another go at some time in the future.

“FANTASTIC VALUE - EXCEPTIONAL SERVICE”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 July 2011

Just redecorated and rebranded this restaraunt would be hard to beat. Lots of locals use it for family outings - so good sign. Value is really good and service is exceptional with charming, courteous and attentive staff. My wife experimented but didn't like her main course - no quibble - changed straight away. Food really well presented and good choice.

Dear AlextsUK
Thank you for your kind words and I was delighted that we were able to rectify your wifes main course and offer an alternative dish during your meal.
That is our policy and was glad to see the team sorted it out.

“Spectacular food, wonderful service and an incredible price tag”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 April 2010

I always remembered this place as rather fancy with a price tag to match, but after deciding to revisit following a recent refurbishment, I was left with a huge smile and a full belly.

At the time of writing this review, the three-course Spring special menu is one whose price tag had me seeing double, because food of this quality could easily command a price three times as high as the one demanded.

Often with set menus the choice is poor and you are left wondering if you're eating the leftovers from the night before, but this is definitely not the case here. There are two vegetarian mains, for example, and at least four other choices involving meat and fish.

Our food was served quickly by smartly dressed staff who were happy to explain more about the menu. It was beautifully presented, too, with a taste to match. The choice includes some more adventurous and unusual dishes, including a particularly tasty pork schnitzel, served with some superbly seasoned roasted potatoes and roasted vegetables that were cooked just enough to retain their crunchiness and flavour.

The desserts are on the measly side, but with such a good starter and main course already behind you, and such a wide selection of beautifully presented sweets, you should hardly be bothered by the size of the dessert. The mousse was particularly tasty, with a definite emphasis on the presentation.

The bathrooms in the restaurant are very well appointed, with nice touches, like a choice of liquid soap or moisturiser, both top quality brands.

Overall this couldn't be more highly recommended, and the food here does not at all stretch the budget. If I had my way, I would light the restaurant area slightly better, because it does feel a little dark, and the outside dining area is not yet completed at the time of writing, but this hardly dents the outstanding experience we had here.

“School Food...without the good bits. If you fancy wasting an evening and your hard-earned cash, then make your way to...”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 October 2009

School Food...without the good bits.
If you fancy wasting an evening and your hard-earned cash, then make your way to the Grand Mare, a hotel that really isn't up to being a restaurant also.
Tried the Tennerfest recently and was seriously underwhelmed by the facilites, service and food. Restaurant is old and tatty, with a dining conservatory area that should be closed off as you felt you were sitting in someone's potting shed. Floor was in fact dangerous, coming on to parquet wood from a carpeted main area. All staff were non-English and communication was not easy. As for the food - Risotto was like a Scout Camp disaster, soggy and splatted onto the plate; chocolate creme caramel was a gouey mess; sticky toffee pudding was sent back for resuscitation.
Place was lucky to score 1 star - but that was because the meal was on the house as one of our party fell on said floor and was seriously hurt. What a disaster.
JLR score: 7/50
