“Good rooms, great service and a great sunset”
Reviewed 27 July 2012

We held an event at Cobo Bay and had several rooms for the night. We were lucky enough to have a cloudless sunset which did add hugely to the evening, but the staff could not have been more helpful, the food was fantastic and the rooms, although some were a little small, were of such a good standard that it really did not matter.

For such a good location the hotel is great value. Yes, it is the other side of Guernsey to the main town, but to be honest that is no great shakes, given that it is only 15 minutes drive away, and St Peter Port suffers from being on the East coast and thus is in shade for most of the afternoon. By contrast Cobo Bay has sun all afternoon and that spectacular sunset.

The worst thing about our stay here was the staff's attitude towards us. What has happened to 'customer service'? ...we were made to feel like we were the problem!

My partner and I spent one night at this Hotel (originally booked three).

To start with we were put in a room near rooftop extractor fans and above the Hotel's kitchen, so not only did we have the constant droning of the fans, but also the clanging of pots and pans beneath us. We were told by the lady on reception that this was a popular room, especially with staff, where they would sometimes stay when off duty, but in that same sentence then told us the room had recently undergone work to improve soundproofing (shot herself in the foot springs to mind!).

Also, during a meal in the Hotel Restaurant I found a hair in my food (and also the same the next morning at breakfast).

Chipped glass top to coffee table (not good if staying with children).

Base of bed could be felt through the mattress.

We ended up checking out early and found a fantastic hotel nearby, wish we had booked there in the first place! (St Pierre Park).

Bottom line was the staff's attitude; at one point I phoned reception from the room to try and sort matters out and the receptionist was talking over me, defiant and made me feel like the whole thing was our problem.

Don't even think about going here!

Room Tip: Go somewhere else!

Dear Bonnie,

I am sorry that you were not happy with the room which you received, but it is also requested by a number of guests who return each year as it does qualify as a suite at 4-star level. We did spend a lot of money in order to sound proof the room at the start of the year and this is only the second noise complaint we have received since, so it would seem it has worked. The fan is switched off at 10pm each night until breakfast, during which time there is no washing up done, therefore your sleep quality should not be affected.

The chipped coffee table glass top has since been replaced, although the mattress has not received any other complaints prior to or since your visit.

As for customer service, I would like to assure anyone reading this post that if you are a guest of the hotel and encounter a problem during your stay, then please bring it to our attention in a respectful & courteous manner and we in turn will do everything we can to resolve it for you as soon as possible.

As we were fully booked on the first night of your stay, unfortunately we were unable to change your room, and we therefore kindly requested that you contact reception in the morning if you still wished to move rooms, which would provide us with enough time to adjust our arrivals on that day. As we did not hear from you, we assumed that you no longer wished to move.

However, you then complained once more at 5pm, by which time all of arrivals had checked in and we were faced with the same problem as the first night. We therefore offered you the chance to move to our sister hotel, The Farmhouse, though you informed us an hour later that you had decided to check our & find alternative accommodation elsewhere.

Whilst I can only apologise once more that you were unhappy with your accommodation, I firmly believe that our reception team did their upmost to resolve your problem, despite your hostility towards them.

Yours sincerely,

Luke Nussbaumer

After spending a delightful weekend at Cobo Bay Hotel there is one question that goes unanswered and that is: why is it only rated as a 3 star establishment? True, if I was to give any major criticism about Cobo, it would be the size of the rooms but even so, they are so tastefully appointed and to such a high standard that I strongly feel that the 3-star rating must be more than disappointing to owners and staff alike. From fresh fruit on arrival, bath robes and slippers additions found generally in four and five star establishments, Cobo offers these as standard.

The level of service from the staff is, in a word, “outstanding”. Christina on the front desk is not only welcoming and friendly she genuinely wants to ensure that not only your stay at the hotel is pleasant but that you entire experience in Guernsey is memorable. The staff in the dining room are all efficient and pleasant and are overseen by the lovely Romano who knows how to make each and every one of his guests feel particularly special. But good service at Cobo is not limited to front of house; behind the scenes in the kitchen is an amazing Chef who presents for your dining pleasure some truly amazing dishes.

Cobo Bay Hotel has moved me to take the time to write this review something that I have never done before. Cobo Bay has some wonderful gems in its staff and this in turn makes Cobo Bay a hidden gem. I hope that they will soon don that extra star that they most definitively deserve. Until such time view Cobo Bay as a 4 star hotel locked in a 3-star shell.

We didn't stay here but enjoyed an excellent meal in their restaurant. Food and service were superb which made for a lovely evening out. The hotel is in a good location with a bus stop close by. The public areas were very clean and appealing. The hotel is only classed as a three star but from the service and food provided it definitely should be given four star status at least.

We (group of 5 women) had a fantastic weekend break at the Cobo Bay Hotel, which is a beautiful hotel with panoramic sea views. The rooms were clean, tidy and comfortable. They provided the standard tea, coffee and biscuit tray plus a plate of fruits and bottled water on arrival to the rooms. The beds were comfy and the ensuite was modern with a powerful shower. Towels, Robes and toiletries were provided.

The staff were a friendly and accomodating group and there was not anything that was too difficult for them to do. They went out of their way to help you. Christine on reception was a treasure!

As for the food, it was more 5 star than 3 star. There was a variety at breakfast from fruits and cream, cereals and an array of patissierie and cold meats, and on top of that you could have a full English breakfast. It was supberb.

Dinner: Al I can say is, 'compliments to the chef'. The menu was a la carte, providing generous portions which were absolutely delicious. My favourite was the Crispy belly pork, it was tender, succulent and tasty with a crispy crackling to die for! hmmmmmmn!

I must mention Ramano the maitre de who became our personal waiter. He was friendly, and once again went out of his way to accomodate our various tastes. He's a wonderful chap who represents what Cobo Bay Hotel stands for, friendly, hospitable and kind.

Room Tip: If you can choose a room with a sea view. You have to hurry because they get snapped up quickly.

We spent a night here in en route back home from a holiday in Sark. This is a well situated hotel set opposite to a lovely bay. Although there is a road between the hotel and bay it is not too obtrusive. The terrace dining and sitting area is very pleasant on a warm day and in the evening very efficient heaters operate should the weather turn chilly.
The hotel is very clean and the staff are excellent. The restaurant food, both breakfast and dinner, is very good as is the food served on the sun terrace. The room we had was on the small side but well equiped with a lovely shower - however, the kitchen extractor fan operated outside the room window all day, although it was turned off after food service in the evening. We would certainly stay there again.

Room Tip: Ask for a room not situated above the kitchen extractors

Absolutely gorgeous room, balcony with stunning views. Beautifully clean. Ordered breakfast in bed which was really good. Staff helpful and friendly. Would highly recommend this hotel for a romantic weekend, make sure you book a room with a balcony, completely worth the extra money!
