Guernsey is a beautiful island with plenty to see and do, but having such good accommodation made the holiday perfect.

My husband and I have just returned from a 4 night break at Hougue du Pommier, part of a very good value, last minute Islandgetaway package. The hotel is an easy 10 minute walk away from the lovely beaches at Castel and enjoys a very tranquil setting with a swimming pool set in a walled garden and rooms looking onto a pretty central garden set with tables and chairs providing an ideal area to sit with drinks or a cream tea. Lots of safe parking available. We had a hire car but the food in the bar area of the hotel was so good we found ourselves eating there almost every night. Breakfasts were also of a good standard. The room itself was exactly what I would expect of a 3 star hotel - a reasonable standard but not the most spacious. The staff were professional and helpful when required. We were fortunate to enjoy very good weather throughout our stay and each afternoon, after returning from trips to various parts of the island, we enjoyed real peace and quiet on the very comfortable sun loungers in the pool area and swam each day in the pool which was always a really comfortable temperature. Staff served cream teas and drinks to the pool area also and the walled garden setting made it a sun trap. Very relaxing and tranquil break in a pretty location. The food was really very good in the bar area - we did not try the a la carte restaurant as we did not want 4 courses each evening - and tremendous value. Rooms were provided with kettles, coffee, tea etc which were replaced each day. TVs only have 4 channels. Very quiet at night, beds and pillows satisfactory. We would definitely stay at Hougue due Pommier again should we return.

Note should be taken of issues regarding hire cars - even after taking out extra insurance, you will still be penalised if tyres or alloys are scratched as these are not covered by any insurance. Guernsey roads are very narrow and it would not be hard to damage wheels. Consequently, driving turned out to be quite stressful as we were very conscious of this issue. If we had been driving our own car, this would not have bothered us. I would not hire a car again but would, instead, use public transport or hire a bike. All parts of the island are very easy to reach and there is a bus stop very close to Hougue du Pommier.

We stayed here to celebrate my wife's 29th birthday (for the tweflth time) and we were the youngest guests by quite some margin.

The hotel is a bit tired and in need of refurbishment. Our room was a bit scruffy with dated decor. The bathroom was grubby and the toilet wouldn't flush.

The breakfast was uninspiring, consisting of cereals, a few pastries, a limited choice of fruit and some yogurts from a buffet and a cooked breakfast that was cooked to order but also fairly bland and uninspiring.

We ate in the bar one night and I have to say that the steaks we had were very good and reasonably priced. The wine was also very reasonably priced for a hotel.

All in all I think that this hotel is perfect for the retired clientelle which it attracts - cheap, safe and uninspiring.

We won't be going back - even after we have retired.

Having read the reviews of Hougue du Pommier with some being positive and some negative we were not sure what to expect. However, we were pleasantly surprised from our first meeting with Hotel staff to the quality of the food and the rooms. In some parts of the Hotel the decor is dated but the overall cleanliness cannot be faulted. The food served in the bar was suited to all tastes at a very reasonable price and we ate there twice. The Hotel is ideally situated a short walk from Cobo Bay with a fantastic bus service from virtually the front door. At 60p a trip it was excellent value and always ran on time. This was our first visit to Guernsey and overall we found the island a wonderful place and will certainly return.

Friendly welcome. Quiet, nicely decorated rooms. Ideal location whether travelling by car, bycycle or bus, or all as we were. Food is great value, with a menu to cover most tastes, we chose to eat in every night. Pool area a great place to relax, secluded, and sheltered. The staff are a credit to the hotel, all very friendly and pleasant, and the room cleaning could not be faulted.
We have travelled widely abroad, staying at hotels from very basic to luxurious, and we would certainly recommed the Hougue to anyone.

We stayed for 8 nights with two friends on a B&B basis to give us freedom to eat where we chose in an evening. We did, however, eat in the bar at this hotel on four of those evenings and the food was invariably of a high standard. The hotel is in a quiet country location a few minutes walk from Cobo Bay. Staff were friendly and helpful and everything was clean. This was our first visit to Guernsey and we knew little about the island but this hotel was ideal for our needs. We would definitely return if we come back to the island.

I have stayed in quite a few hotels over the years and in terms of value for money the Hougue du Pommier was excellent.
The staff were efficient and enthusiastic, the food was pretty good, and the swimming pool was very welcome at the end of a day's sightseeing. The rooms were a goed size and the general amenities of the hotel - grounds, bar, sun deck, conservatory - were useful.
Overall, this is not a 4/5 star hotel, but I personally would say that a stay at the Hougue du Pommier was more 'comfortable' than any 4/5 star hotel that I have stayed in in the past.
If there was a downside it was no sea view on an Island, but this was available within a 10 min walk
