“lovely little hotel on quaint and beautiful island”
Reviewed 24 September 2010

the hotel is "under new management" - not sure how long since the changeover, but it seems to be going well for the new guys. its obviously a favourite with some long-standing guests, and i can see why. quaint and homely, there's nothing missing in terms of facilities and service, but the fixtures and fittings are a little tired and the bathrooms could do with a simple spruce up - mouldy shower cable and a toilet that you're best keeping the lid down on (perhaps the drains need a good blast?) but overall, welcoming, comfortable and convenient. better for those seeking a quiet relaxing holiday, although the paper-thin walls mean the relaxation of the snorer next door might infringe on your own sleep!

Pluses
Charming staff, mainly smiley young eastern europeans, were doing the job as it should be done. The room was spotlessly clean, with a good shower with plenty hot water. Nice touches: safe grip mat in the bath; putting the lights on for night. Very quiet location. Slept very well. Close to bus stop for excellent Island Bus Service. I only ate breakfast there as visiting friends on the Island. Lovely gardens. I was one of the younger guests, and I am in my 50's! Felt very comfortable as a single woman traveller.
Minuses
TV from the stone age with no controller. Had to be assertive to get it seen to. Replaced with excellent new flat screen, but only tuned to a few channels. The room felt and smelt slightly damp. It was a chilly at night, could have done with heating on for a short time to make cosy. Breakfast time service was a bit overstretched: the first morning I had to be assertive to get basic coffee and toast. Subsequent service was mega prompt and charming.
I am used to business hotels so maybe I have unrealistic expectations of what is basically a cheapish holiday hotel.I was not very happy about the cost being deducted from my credit card when I booked, which was a several weeks before my stay. A hotel for those wanting a very quiet, traditional hotel, with no rip offs.

I was concerned when I read the previous reviews about this hotel and went with an open mind. I do not think this is a hotel for young people and teenagers as the customers tend to be older. The best thing about the hotel is its location near Cobo beach and the food in the bar was exceptional and reasonably priced, the staff fantastic. However, the pictures on the webiste of the bedrooms are mostly the upgraded one's and the standard rooms do need re-decorating. Hated having a blanket - felt like a hospital bed. We looked in at several other hotels in the immediate area and found that most of them were traditionally decorated with wallpaper, but at least it was newer wall paper! Our en-suite shower was very cramped and had been patched up with a new toilet but a very old advocado green shower tray which had horrible water stains on it but the power shower was always hot. Yes the ceiling was leaking by the staircase, but it is an old building which I think had not been maintained in the past. I think the staff know that it needs updating and hopefully when the hotel closes they will get on with the job because they are lagging behind some very nice 3* hotels with modern bathrooms. Guernsey is a fabulous island with plenty to do for a week, and we preferred it to Jersey. The bays are more accessible and free to park with wonderfull kiosks selling all types of food and drink at very reasonable prices. St. Peter Port is charming and the people friendly and polite (even the children we saw) and it reminded us of England 30 years ago. Try the sheltered sandy beach in Le Petit Bot ( when the tide is out) limited parking, but worth it, with a lovely restaurant selling everything from seafood, to take away coffee, ice creams, etc., We loved it and would go back, but try a different hotel.

From the Hotel's webpage, it appears to be a beautiful place; on arrival, not so. None of the rooms we saw were anything like the photos shown and were incredibly dated, with horrible fading wall paper and generally ugly decor. Furthermore, the website says it 'is set within eight acres of beautiful garden', again, not so - as far as i could tell there were about 3 to four acres of garden if you include all the different patches, but the land is very boring and has not been put to good use in the slightest. There was also a leak in the corridor coming from the ceiling during our stay, in which a bucket was left to catch the drip... meanwhile the stairs became wet from this and somebody actually slipped and almost fell badly. One thing i can say in the Hotel's favour, is that most of the staff were very pleasant and courteous, however we overheard one member of staff (which i assume to be the manager) being nasty about people staying in the hotel: ''oh, the posh ones that leave no tips'' and being very offish to a guest asking a perfectly reasonable question, which we found to be very insensitive. Meals were fairly good in the bar, but all in all the hotel is very falsely advertised, has a very narrow pool of customers (mainly couples in their 60s) which is no doubt due to the dated and old fashioned set up which just is not attractive anymore. I would not recommend this hotel at all.

We enjoyed our week at this hotel very much. The food was good, the staff courteous and helpful, our room was kept spotless, and it was quiet.
The hotel is very well situated near the west coast of Guernsey, with local beaches very accessible, and any part of the island only a short drive away.
The staff are clearly a capable and friendly group, and they should feel confident about the quality they provide.

My husband and I stayed at this hotel for 5 nights - end August, 2010. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The management and staff are all very pleasant people, nothing was ever too much trouble, and always a friendly smile. The food was excellent. The gardens are beautiful, and a lovely quiet area to sit and read or just relax and watch the world go by.

The room we had was adequate, and very clean. We had fresh towels every day, and tea and coffee was always plentiful. The decor is looking a little tired in places, but this is something, that I am sure the managment will update accordingly.

We travelled by ferry crossing from Weymouth and took our own car. However, as there is a regular bus route close by, and taxi's available at a fairly reasonable price, also just a 10 minute walk to the beautiful Cobo Bay, we probably wouldn't take our car next time.

Having read other reviews - stating that the hotel was very quiet with no entertainment, should you require lively night-life this hotel or indeed the beautiful Island of Guernsey is not the holiday for you.

For total relaxation, with attentive staff, stay at this hotel. You are guaranteed to come home 'stress free'.

I would have no hesitation in staying at this hotel again.

We stayed at this hotel for 2 nights on the Bank Holiday weekend.
On arrival we all thought the hotel was very pretty. The gardens are lovely with plenty of tables and chairs. The pool was large for a hotel of this size, unfortunately the water was a bit too cold for us at this time of year.
We were a party of eight and our rooms varied in style. Our room had a lovely four poster bed which was very comfortable except that it would have been nice to have a duvet instead of a blanket and sheet. A flat screen TV was in the room but only the basic 4 channels were available and the picture was very fuzzy.
The shower was over the bath and was very difficult to use without the whole bathroom floor being soaked! I did point this out to the management and the response was that there was nothing they could do about it.
We only had breakfast at the hotel which was quite adequate but would have nice to have a few smiles from the staff.
The bar closed at about 11pm each night which was a bit dissapointing for us as we could not get a drink after returning from our nights out.
On the whole the hotel is a little dated but very comfortable and ok for just a couple of nights.
