“Another 1st Class Break”
Reviewed 12 August 2013

Once again we stayed at La Grande Mare. Spent a week at the Grand Mare having been on 2 previous occasions. We stayed self catering and as usual the apartment was spotless and great for our family of 5.
The outside pool was busy but never overcrowded. The food was excellent we had breakfast and evening meals. (Only disappointment was to miss out on the superb afternoon tea!)
Service from Reception was first class the only area we felt was a little disappointing was the service from the bar and restaurant (Where we were fairly often!!) Some staff were great others perhaps were left wanting. All in All we plan to return and would not stay anywhere else on the island.

We stayed at the hotel for 2 nights at the beginning of August. Overall it was a pleasant stay, the hotel staff on reception were very friendly and helped with recommendations on where to visit as this was our 1st time in Guernsey.
The room that we stayed in (studio B7) was very spacious and extremely clean. There is a fridge, toaster and microwave in the room, a lovely little seating area with dining table and the bathroom is lovely. The only thing that would improve the studio would be to put a big bath under the velux window in the bathroom.
We had dinner in the hotel restaurant on the 1st night of our stay and this is where we can make our only criticism. Unfortunately, my husband found a bone in the 1st couple of bites of his meal. We sent it back as it really put him off eating it. There was no word of apology from the waitress or the kitchen staff, however an alternative dish was provided for him. This meant that we both had to eat our main courses on our own. Although the hotel cleaning and reception staff were very friendly, we did find that the same qualities were lacking in the restaurant staff.
This is the perfect hotel for those that want a peaceful break away. The hotel is located on a gorgeous sandy beach, you can walk to numerous other bays from the hotel. We visited Herm island whilst in Guernsey, which is a must if you love Mediterranean sandy coves. Herm really does make you feel like you have taken a break from it all. St Peter Port is lovely to have a look round, with a great selection of shops and eating places. The busses are very good in Guernsey, they travel regularly from the hotel to St Peter Port. I would however recommend hiring a car if you visit Le Grande Mare as it can feel quite isolated.
Thank you to Le Grande Mare as overall, our stay was a pleasant one.

Wonderful location on the West Coast of Guernsey, good accommodation and a really friendly restaurant with superb staff. The set meals are interesting and great value for ,money compared to other Guernsey restaurants.
The golf course is a short 18 hole course but very tricky and challenging, golf staff are all very helpful and first class coaching is available.
For non golfers there is a Health Club and a pleasant indoor pool, the hotel has its own outdoor pool in front of the main restaurant.

We decided to hold our wedding (including outdoor ceremony) after visiting the Grande Mare with our requirements.
The staff at the Grand Mare were very helpful, nothing was too much bother for them.
Our wedding day went without a hitch.
We also stayed two nights in penthouse suites which were excellent, rooms were clean and spacious.
Food could not be faulted and our wedding guests agreed
La Grande Mare comes highly recommended by us for any occasion.

Hotel staff pleasant and friendly as always. Hotel suite first class as usual. Fantastic sandy beach right across the road. Two weeks full sun. What more could you ask for? Lovely balcony to sit out on in the evening with a glass of wine, just enjoying the beach views. This is the 35th year that we have visited Guernsey and have no reason to go anywhere else. All locals are friendly. After a nice relaxing cliff path walk we can fully recommend the tea room at Icart. We've already visited all the tourist attractions but sadly some of them have closed now like the Wood carvers, Strawberry farm, Tomato museum. It is nice to see that some of the forts are being opened for visitors to view and hopefully they open more because they are part of history.

Room Tip: Rooms at rear of hotel probably quieter with no cars coming down drive but we had suite at front wit...

We spent a week at La Grande Mare and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The staff were very helpful and friendly and the location couldn't have been nicer. Our rooms looked out across the swimming pool and the beach was just across a quiet road. We spent our time looking around Guernsey as it was our first trip to the Island and we also visited Sark.
We didn't use the spa or other facilities but we did eat in the restaurant, the food was delicious.
The only slight downside was the charge for servicing the apartment which we didn't expect but it did not spoil the holiday in any way.
