“A warm welcome guaranteed”
Reviewed 3 July 2011

Great location a couple of hundred yards from the beach with stunning scenery at Grande Rocques on the west side of the island. A traditional hotel with a very warm welcome from Donna, Paul, Dave and all the staff. A definite favourite with the "locals". Traditional bar meals from an extensive menu are available with live music at the weekends from tribute and name acts. This hotel also boasts its own ballroom. The large breakfast room is newly refurbished and becomes a second restaurant in the evening with a selection of steaks which you can cook yourself to perfection on hot lava rocks! The hotel has a swimming pool and plenty of parking. If you are looking for a traditional friendly hotel with good food, this is it.

Room Tip: New chalet rooms have recently been added.

Step back in time and visit the Wayside. Situated just of the coast road this small hotel is a bit of a ramble. It is in a ideal place for walks, and away from the town. We were warmly welcomed by Donna the manager a great lady who just loves to help. Going into the hotel is like stepping back 30 years. The ground floor is a rample of rooms and quite dark, access to the bedrooms is up a steep wooden staircase out of the bar. The bedrooms are bright and clean in a little dated and we missed the toiletries in the bathroom. The residents lounge is also on the first floor ,but very quite and a bit miserable. The hotel was a little quite when we stayed , but the breakfasts were hot and wholesome. The evening meals were also good. What makes this place is the staff allways welcoming and inclusive. and if you go and don't expect the ritz I'm sure you will enjoy your stay.
If you stay a few days, do eat out there are some good restaurants within a short drive.

My father and I have stayed at the Wayside Cheer Hotel and a number of occasions. The hotel is great value for money and is very comfortable and clean. The bar has a very friendly atmosphere which benifits from having a barman "Dave" who just goes that extra mile to ensure you have a fab holiday. The staff team in the restaurant are very experienced and nothing seems to be any trouble for them. We ate in the restaurant/bar area most nights and the food was great. My dad happened to mention that he would like a crab salad which wasnt on the menu. The day after , Donnah the Manager got some delivered in time for dinner the following day. Nice touch!! The beds are so, so, comfy too which is rare in hotels. We will certainly be back in a few months time. Thanks to Donnah and Team for making out stay a great one. Excellent all round

This was our third stay at the Wayside and it just gets better each time. All the staff are friendly, especially Donna, Paul, David, Innes and Dini. The rooms are clean and the beds are very comfortable. Food is excellent and good value for money, you must try the " black rock grill". Only sorry we have to wait until next year until we can return.

Unbelievable!! The resturant manager was shouting at the guests at breakfast because they were talking too loudly. We were instructed to move tables when half way through our weetabix. Unhelpful bordering on rude staff. Noisy with rooms directly over tbe bar/entertainment area. Very tired decor but clean. Bed comfy but short with nylon bedding!!!
Good location if you want to be near a beach miles from anywhere. Good value i suppose

As with all reviews that are not acceptable to our high standards I fully investigate not to make excuses but to clarify things a little.

At breakfast another guest had complained to the head waiter that certain other guests were being a little rowdy and asked if he could ask them to be a little quiter

When he asked them, to be quiter he was gven a some abuse and possibly raised his voice a little which he is sorry for, but our staff are here to serve the guests not to be abused by them and another guests who was there told me that he were happy how the situation was handled.

We have a seating plan for guests for breakfast and the table numbers are the same as the room numbers these guests sat at someone elses table so were asked to move, it is possible that these guests did not realise as they were only staying 1 night.

All Linen in the Hotel is Egyption Cotton

All Beds are in the Hotel are Std Size 6ft 3in Long ad of much higher grade that beds usually found in our grade hotel (thats why they are comfy)

Guernsey is approx 9 miles by 5 Miles the Capital St Peter Port is 3.5 Miles away, Cobo Vilage 1 mile away, the Islands leading Attraction Oatlands 2 miles and there is nothing in the Island that is more than 5 miles away.

The Hotel has had approx £250,000 spent on referbishments in the past 3 years

We do have a few rooms that are over the bar, hopefully our guests are enjoying the entertainment but if guests request we can make sure that they have a quiter room in the Hotel or in one of the 9 Chalets not effected by the bar.

I am sorry that you had a complaint and have dealt with it in house to avoid a repeat in the future but I am glad you found the hotel Clean, bed Comfy and it was Good Value.

We were lucky to have great weather for our short break and since our visit in 2009 the wayside has got even better with new furniture in the bar and restaurant.

We were happy to see the same friendly staff, and the room we had was bright and comfortable,

We booked B & B and ate in the Bar each night, the menu has changed since last time but still has a huge choice and there were several extra seafood dishes on the Specials Board.

On our last night we tried the new Black Rock Grill menu which was a treat, you cook your steak or fish on a Hot Rock at the table it made an exiting end to our holiday.

hopefully we will get another break before the end of 2011

Thanks to everyone for a great time
