Description: The Captains is best described as an Inn with rooms, all 9 en suite bedrooms have been recently re-carpeted and are equipped with tv, tea and coffee facilities and complimentary toiletries. The bar attracts locals and visitors alike and you are guaranteed lively banter around the bar area. Whilst the bistro and bar area serves traditional bar meals, the Captains has gained a reputation in recent years for their Seafood dishes and the freshest of local fish. Reservations are not always necessary but to avoid disappointment it is suggested at the weekends and the busy summer months.

On my week's holiday in St Martins, the Captains was my favourite of the three pubs visited for food in the evening. It was an interesting place, with several different features on two levels. The top level had an attractive outdoor seating area but a rather bland modern bar dominated by a TV screen. The lower level also had an outdoor area and a more attractive traditional bar. I only sat on the upper level so can't comment further on the lower one. The food service was slow on both occasions I visited, for reasons explained the first time but not the second. There were two good English real ales on offer - Butcombe and London Pride. The outdoor tables could only be occupied until 9pm.

Admittedly we visited on spec on a very busy night. On the other hand, it was difficult to know what the system was as nobody seemed available to ask although we were directed downstairs by staff at the upstairs bar. We eventually were told that people who had reserved were attended to first. It would have been fine if we had been told that initially but we had well over an hour waiting without being aware of this. When it came, the fish was delicious (although a huge amount but that is always a personal preference).

Don't be fooled by the pub appearance, the restaurant is downstairs and the friendly staff and good food are worth the visit.
Make sure you book, as this place is very popular even mid week !

This pub / restaurant has plenty of publicity promoting several awards, and very highly-rated reviews.

But let's get some balance here - in reality it's nothing special.
It's not that easy to find and maybe not worth the effort.
We found the food quite bland. Plenty of seafood on the menu but not much else
Very busy as weekends. Ok for a change but that's about it

Love it here - not at all pretentious, this place is relaxed, welcoming and efficient - we highly recommend. You can eat early too - unlike so many other places, they service food most of the day.
