This hotel is situated on the lovely island Guernsey, reachable easily by bus. The hotel rooms are great, although they can be a bit noisy (book a room at the end of the hallway). The staff consists for a large part of work-students that are highly qualified for excellent service. They are friendly, attentive and know how to make you feel at home in the hotel. The kitchen is really good with a fine list of excellent dishes, the service in the restaurant is excellent.

As a local Guernsey resident I have dined at La Barbarie Hotel with friends and family on numerous occassions over many years and have never, ever had cause to complain about the service or food.

Infact, quite the reverse - the staff and Manager are attentive and accommodating to every individual request.

I can highly recommend this hotel for both the accommodation and excellent restaurant. LJF

We stayed here for a week in 2003 and made a return visit with our 3 year old. Really pleased to say that the standard of food and room, and the courtesy of the staff was as good as ever! Also, we were really pleased to find a children's menu on offer.
The half board deal is excellent value.
Lovely garden and a nice pool too.

We had a brilliant time at La Barbarie. The staff were very welcoming and friendly. The rooms were excellent and were cleaned every day.

The restaurant was excellent and the food we had their was great and the menu had a variety of choices to choose from.

There was a lovely swimming pool which you could relax in after your day out.

We would most certainly stay there again if we chose to have a holiday in Guernsey.

I have never felt so unwelcome and had such an unpleasant experience in a restaurant as we did at La Barberie on the last day of what had been a lovely holiday in the usually friendly Guernsey. Having heard that the lobster was worth a trip, we called to book a table for lunch the day before. We phoned up the day before we planned to go and asked to book a table for lunch, but were told there was no need and that we should just turn up. As we were travelling with our young daughter we also specifically asked if the restaurant welcomed babies and were told most definitely that the place was baby-friendly.

Our actual experience of the place was a mixture of unfriendly, rude and just weird. For some reason which we could not understand, we were given the distinct impression that we were simply not welcome in the restaurant. The place is not cheap and so we were fully expecting to spend a good amount of money on a splendid lunch, but the behaviour of the staff was so unpleasant we didn't even get that far.

We turned up and asked for a table in the restaurant, but a rather unfriendly waitress said we could only sit in the bar, as they only used the restaurant when the bar was full. This seemed a bit odd for a start as there were a few people in the restaurant, although there were also a number of empty tables. We decided not to make too much of it and asked for a table in the bar. A waiter then brought over the bar menus. I asked if we could have the restaurant menu as it was their famous lobster that we were after in particular, and there were posters everywhere about their "July and August specials" of lobster and other seafood. He insisted the menus were the same, which did not seem true at all as the menu he had handed us clearly said "bar menu" at the top. I walked over to the restaurant entrance to look at the menu there and asked if we could have that one. The waiter came over and asked what I was doing. I said I was looking at the menu and was in fact interested in the restaurant menu not the bar menu. He said that I couldn't have it and he needed to speak to the chef. With the atmosphere becoming more and more like a scene out of fawlty towers, another man then came out who seemed to be a more senior waiter. I can't believe he was the chef as he was wearing a shirt and tie. Anyway I asked again if we could have the menu that was up on the posters everywhere and he said in a most unfriendly manner "you can have the lobster salad". I said that actually it was their famous lobster we were after and they appeared to have an extensive menu of lobster in the restaurant but he just kept repeating "you can have the lobster salad".

At that point we decided to leave. We were absolutely flummoxed as to why we were not allowed to eat in the restaurant. Whether it was because we had a baby with us, or whether they thought we didn't have the right look we will never know. If there was some sort of restaurant policy that we didn't adhere to they failed to tell us.

With the welcome, or lack of, at La Barbarie made clear, we went instead to the beach cafe at La Fermaine bay which was absolutely fantastic. Delicious food, an amazing view, and friendly welcoming staff. If we ever go back to Guernsey we will definitely head back there, and definitely stay well clear of La Barbarie.

Thank you for your recent review
I would like to apologise on behalf of La Barbarie Hotel for your alleged treatment and can assure you that all personnel have been made aware of what can materialise when customer expectations are not met.
This is without question a very rare occurrence and as you will note from other reviews on this site La Barbarie is often complemented for its friendly attentive service and indeed this year increased its quality service percentage mark from 77% to 80% by a well known independent grading authority.

May I also take this opportunity to thank all reviewers on this site for their feed back which helps and encourages us to continue raising our standards.

We have recently returned from a 10 night stay at the La Barbarie Hotel and promised hotel manager Andy a good report on 'tripadvisor' so here it is. Tucked away in the leafy lanes of St Martin, this small extremely well run premises was a refreshing find on our first visit to Guernsey. Each and every member of staff we encountered conducted themselves in an efficient yet friendly manner working well as a team. The rooms are very clean, comfortable with bright modern bathrooms. Our room (No.8) had patio doors and a small balcony overlooking the garden and heated hotel pool. After walking the entire island perimeter including the south coast cliff path over a number of days, we always looked forward to our evening meal at the hotel restaurant. We were never disappointed with the excellent food. A varied balance of menus using local produce where possible was always very well presented. The quality of service was of an exceptional standard. We like to find places popular with local residents for 'eating out' and there appeared to be a healthy number welcomed in the bar prior to visiting the restaurant. With a frequent and very cheap local bus service close to hand, there is no problem exploring further afield on the island. Overall, an excellent experience at LaBarbarie - so stop looking elsewhere.

we stayed in one of the two bedroom appartments, which was very clean and looked over the swimming pool. The bedrooms faced the back and were very quiet. it was great to be self-catering but to have the facilities of a hotel. The staff were very friendly and helpful, nothing was too much trouble. the restaurant was superb; wonderful food, relaxing and welcoming atmosphere, and catered well for children. There was a nice mix of children of all ages when we stayed in July, but it was not noisy. The hotel is situated in a great position with the bus stop outside the hotel. We hardly used the car at all as the bus service was so good. There is a lovely walk to Saints bay 5minutes from the hotel. we will definitley return to this hotel and thought it was in a superb position for coastal walks and bike rides.
