Our last meal at Pier 17 was a little disappointing but last night they redeemed themselves and some.

Four oof us for dinner and we were apprehensive as Seamus was not there but we need not have worried as the quality of the food and the cooking was excellent.

The starters of Prawn & Squid in a mustard sauce and warm duck and potato salad were delicious.

We all opted for steak and all cleared our plates despite being overwhelmed by the quantity of food provided.

No room for desert as we were all full.

Only disappointment was that the usually excellent walnut bread was not provided.

Very good service especially from the maitre'd who is a real asset at Pier 17. She keeps a very tight front of house.

Already looking forward to returning!

We ate out here twice in one week, both dinners were excellent.
The fish is so fresh, almost too fresh at times as the local plaice was cooked but seemed reluctant to leave the bone. Portions are generous and I can recommend the grilled cheese and the trio of smoked salmon, 2 large prawns and local fresh crab as a starter. All the steaks are superb and you get a choice of sauce plus large thick cut chips. The surprise on the plate was parsnip sticks wrapped in bacon as a garnish - very tasty. If you love fish then this is the place.
Staff are professional and attentive, always appearing at the right time to see if you are happy with your food or if you would like anything else. The wine list is good, prices fair, no huge mark ups which is a pleasant surprise in today's world. Jugs of water - no problem. Always busy here so book as even with two sittings you are not guaranteed a table.
Try and sit overlooking the harbour if it is for lunch or a summer dinner. Easy parking at dinner time, allow a little extra time at lunch to park in the free public car park.

It was always axiomatic that a place which offered a gimmick, such as good views, was never going to provide great food. We were told this place was different. It isn't. The start was poor and continued like that. A disinterested young man asked us abruptly if we had a booking. Showing us to the table was obviously an inconvenience to him. Having been ignored for a short while menus finally arrived. The waiting staff looked unhappy, were less than welcoming and unwilling to engage with the diners. The menu is limited but appeared adequate, though questions about the food were answered in a way that suggested we shouldn't be asking in the first place. But perhaps the staff just don't know about the food they serve? A forty minute wait later the food appeared. I don't expect immediate service but not 40 minutes either. This is the art of running a restaurant - consistently high quality food delivered in a reasonable time. My wife's steak was ok, no more, with horrible big chips (this is supposedly a restaurant, not a cafe, for goodness' sake - where's the class?!). My chicken was a fillet of chicken - torn apart, not sliced - and pressed down into mash potatoes which were dry and lumpy, Separating chicken from mash was simply not possible. This was then covered with a minimal amount of mustard sauce and topped with limp lettuce. Add in the warmed, rather than cooked, green beans and the food was very poor. Add in a glass of red wine from a bottle which had apparently been opened a few days before and was undrinkable (it was house wine but it should still be palatable, otherwise don't offer it). Overall effect is underwhelming. The service was such that you don't feel like complaining - why start an argument with someone whose general demeanour is sour? Rather than risk the vagaries of the dessert menu we asked for the bill. We were charged £50 for two main courses, one entirely unsatisfactory, the other barely so, and a glass of poor quality wine. Oh, and including £1.40 for a glass of tap water. Unbelievable. This is how you guarantee a customer will not return and tell as many people as possible not to bother. There is so much for this place to learn - service, attitude, food quality, timing. A visit to a good restaurant to see how it should be done might be in order. This was supposed to be a memorable night to celebrate a significant event. It was memorable, but for all the wrong reasons. Some people, perhaps not the clientele here, want decent standard food and service, commensurate with the price, not just to look at the seagulls. They could pull the blinds down, get people to focus on the food and see what they think without the distraction. I am angry and disappointed.
