“Sobering”

Not knowing much about the occupation of Guernsey in the Second World War we found this Hospital to be a fascinating example of what was done to this delightful island and some of the adversity that had to be tolerated during this time

“Really atmospheric moving experience”
Reviewed 6 July 2014

well worth a visit. Not many of us could possibly imagine what 5 years of German occupation meant to the islanders. The wards are cold with rows of original beds. Take a jumper its cold and full of condensation. Patients must have been horrified!

“Interesting”
Reviewed 1 July 2014

This place is really just empty tunnels. Its filled with atmosphere that you really can feel the horror of the dreadful conditions the prisoners must have endured.
Very different from the German Underground hospital in Jersey.

“Poignant.”
Reviewed 30 June 2014

This place gets a lot into perspective. It was obviously a huge undertaking, built by virtual slave labourers of the Todt Organisation who lived in squalid conditions and survived on starvation rations. The hospital complex is huge and could house up to 800 patients. It was actually used to treat German wounded from the Allied invasion of Normandy. The place has an eerie feel about it and it is easy to imagine it during its use as a hospital. Very thought-provoking. I will say no more than that!

“Interesting, but be prepared for dark, dank and dismal”
Reviewed 28 June 2014

As its name suggests, this is all underground, and is exactly as the Germans left it in 1945 (but add 69 years of ongoing ageing). I found it interesting, and even with heating at the peak of its use in World War ll it wouldn't have been pleasant to have been a patient here. This is not a 'visitor centre', just an opportunity to visit a long disused underground hospital.
