I like this hotel. It is comfortable, welcoming, has great beds and nice rooms and does good breakfasts. The whole place is beautifully looked after. A lovely place to go.
But the price! We were offered a standard room @£140 or a de luxe room for £150. My wife chose the latter because the difference was so small. But the hotel hasn't even got a night porter. One unlocks the door after 10.30 as though one was in a boarding house. What on earth gives the management the feeling that they can charge these sorts of prices? In March we stayed in a 4 star hotel in central Frankfurt for just over a third of this price. I know comparing these two different markets isn't terribly fair - the Frankfurt prices was an advance purchase offer. But even the Havelet's special offers wouldn't cost you much less than £100 a night. I just don't think it is worth it.
I think what Guernsey hoteliers need is an Ibis, a Premier Inn or a Travelodge opening in St Peter Port to offer some competition. Then they would have to offer better value.More
