“A comfortable base”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 September 2012

The Duke of Normandie was a comfortable, well located and modern hotel from which you can explore Guernsey very well. My husband and I stayed in a superior room which was located in the main hotel building (some rooms - not sure which ones - are located around the car park courtyard, which lends a rather "motel" feel to the exterior of the hotel). The room was modern with a very large bed and well equipped bathroom - just don't look too closely because you'll start to see the cracks in the beautiful presentation (our toilet seat was broken, the shower base fell off without so much as touching it, the mirrors had tired looking scratches at the top and bottom, the sink tap was loose etc... etc...). None of this was worth reporting in the slightest (everything worked and was perfectly useable), but it did reaffirm why this is only a 3* hotel in spite of the excellent reviews. The breakfasts were very good - the usual selection on the buffet bar with hot selections of full English, smoked haddock, eggs benedict and so on. The service was a little slow, but it was more than enough for breakfast. All in all this place is good value for money and having the parking was really useful for us with our hire car. The jump up to somewhere like the Duke of Richmond or OGH is probably not justifiable on this place, particularly as it's so close in to town.

I decided to book a short break to Guernsey with my parents. They are both in thier 70's so I wanted a hotel close to everything in St Peter Port. The hotel is tricky to find but being in the middle of a series of one way roads, however, on arrival first imppressions were good. I booked two executive rooms and requested that my parents was positioned on the ground floor.

I had to ask for an additional towel for my parents room as they had one supplied one. Why would you exect two in a dual occupancy room. Even then the one supplied was ripped. Not what you woud expect from a £140 a night room.

More problems started on the first night. The hotel has a pub attached to it called the Admiral Saumarez attached to it which is fine in its self. However, they had a party booking from Heritage Guernsey who unfortunately did not care that it was a hotel with paying guests and got rather merry to say the least. Smoking, drinking and shouting outside my parents room and at one point even trying the door to get in.

Not the hotels fault, but when my mother complained the next moring she was dismissed and told they were from 'Hetitage Guernsey' and there was nothing the hotel could/would do about it. Give it a miss if you want a quite break and the hotel have a party booking.

On the plus side the breakfasts and bistro staff are excellent.

Room Tip: As far awayf from the pub as possible.

What a fantastic hotel. We stayed in room 36 and although small, everything was perfect. The room was immaculate and very well thought out. The bed was comfortable and the tv ENORMOUS!!! We stayed at the hotel on a B&B basis and the breakfasts were superb. The staff were ultra efficient and very helpful. We also ate in the restaurant in the evening on one occasion' the food was great but there was not much choice...very reasonably priced though. Would certainly stay there again...loved it.

We have just returned from 3 nights at the Duke of Normandie and can't fault it really. The hotel is lovely, well maintained, friendly staff and the meals on offer are fantastic value. We stayed in a superior room which if you could find one fault, it was just a tad too small but this is just a minor criticism and did not detract from the quality of our stay. The meals on offer in both the bar and brasserie are not only good value but good quality. The staff are friendly and helpful. Located just minutes from the high street and the harbour, this hotel is perfectly situated. Thoroughly recommended to anyone wanting to visit St Peter Port

We stayed for 7 nights. Our room was very airy and spacious and overlooked the courtyard, it was also very clean and was cleaned daily. Everything you could possibly want was in the room; ipod docking station, tv, telephone, ample supply of tea, coffee etc. safe, mini bar, hairdryer as well as iron and ironing board. Bathroom spacious too and fresh towels daily. The staff are very friendly and helpful, they even carried our cases to our room. Breakfast selection was excellent and served quickly. We also had a couple of bar meals and they were good value for money and very tasty. Very close to ferry and short walk to main street. We will certianly go back.

What a lovely little Hotel, just 2 or 3 minutes walk from the lovely cobbled street of St Peter Port town centre, the rooms were modern & spacious, our room overlooked the courtyard and the decor was lovely, fresh & modern. Tea making facilities, mini bar, iron & ironing board, hairdryer, & spacious bathroom. Check-in was efficient and quick - Michael was very friendly & smiley, the buffet style breakfast bar was really nice followed by a great choice of english breakfast if you wanted one! All of the staff that we came in to contact with were really friendly, I wouldn't hesitate in going back to this lovely hotel -t thank-you for such a pleasant stay :-)

Room Tip: We were in the Courtyard so we had a really decent sized room with large bathroom.

We stayed in this hotel for one night en route to Herm. The hotel was acceptable but we had to climb about four flights of stairs to get to our room. There was also a steep slope down into the town, so not recommended for those unsteady on their feet.

Breakfast was good and served promptly. Staff were pleasant. Would probably find somewhere different the next time we come that has a lift and is on a more level site. And why does the church bells chime on the hour between 7:00 am and midnight. Surely an earlier finish would be better.
