“good friendly hotel”
Reviewed 23 September 2010

we stayed at this hotel in june of this year and found the staff to very friendly and nothing to much trouble . the breakfast is good and well cooked and the teapots are fun and quirky . the pool is reached through the bar and is clean and of a good size .
the bedroom although a little dated was clean pleasant .
on the whole we enjoyed our stay here and would return again without a doubt .

Stated in brochure there was a bar, this was so but only open 5pm-7pm!
Decor shabby and dated and carpets rather in need of deep clean!
Pool area clean and tidy. Breakfast ok but value sausages ( cheap and nasty! )
Service generally good and staff helpful though not overly friendly
A good 20minute walk from town centre but was on a regular bus route.
What could be expected from a 2 star hotel.

I agree with the rest of the reviews that the outside of the hotel and breakfast room along with the staff are the best bits of the hotel and that is were it ends.
Our room was in the attic No15. They had crammed 3 single beds into this room with hardly any space to walk round as we had the sloping ceilings to cope with for headroom. This room had been a double as there were two bedside lamps and a central switch on the main wall. To accomodate the third bed everything had been pushed up against the next item of furniture until the third bed clamped the curtains against the wall making opening them a problem. The beds had two pillows about as thick as a Rivita crisp bread with fadded bed linen. There were 2 chipboard flat pack bed side tables between the 3 beds which were all chipped. Over the end of the third bed was a chipboard, wood vaneered shelf with 2 garage/shed wall brackets which housed the tea/coffee making facilities, if you spilt any water it just ran onto the bed. The kettle was the cheapest of the cheap with a sunken handle in the lid which was absolutly grotty. We had two chairs of the conference hall style with fadded covering and white paint on the legs from decorating. The wardrobe and vanity sink area had been made to suit out of chipboard panels. Where the panels had been cut they had not used the edging strip normally used but had just painted the ends white.
The bathroom had a bath and WC, the sink was in the bedroom due to lack of room. I went to put the towels on the 2 towel rings only for them to fall of the brackets, no problem I thought I can put them on the hooks at the back of the door, wrong they fell off also. The same thing happened to the 2 on the wall over the vanity sink. The shower was the old rubber hose type that you had to fit over the taps of the bath and was fitted to the wall with a pipe clip. The flooring had been the type that curves up the wall and acts as a skirting board but there must have been something wrong with this as someone had attempted to copy the shape out of lino which also had seen it's sell by date come and go. If you picked up the lino it was black underneath. I went to sit on the WC seat to dry my feet but it was the cheapest of the cheap and I nearly went through it.
The whole room had been badly decorated with paint on the doors from the architrave, paint on the brackets from the doors being painted, paint on the floor from lack of dust sheet being used. The tiles around the vanity sink had been re-grouted but only sponge off at lower level, above looked like pebble dash.
I agree with someone else's comments about the bar area which is only open from 1700-1900hrs, the dogs were always around sniffing at this and that. If you wanted to go to the toilet is another story of filth and lack of maintenance. The toilet roll holder was only held on by one screw, the cistern had been badly painted white for some reason, the wall mounted soap dish holder was filthy and served as a shelf for a bottle of hand cleaner. The floor had not seen a mop in weeks and the whole room smelt of very strong urine.
We went with friends and their room was of a similar state. It had no bath and the sink had a large crack across it.
We booked this because we left it very late to book accomodation and it was the only hotel that could accomodate our arrival and departure times.
All I can say is that the people that give this hotel a good report must be used to living in a s**t hole themselves because I certainly would not go again or recommend it to my worse enamy. Everything about the place was done on the cheap with worrying standards of hygein I hate to think what the kitchen looked like.
The kick in the teeth was that the owners parked their top of the range Range Rover out the front.

The outside of the Hotel is far better than the interior, the bar area had the owners dogs constantly in the room and were always sniffing around for food, the bar was only open for a couple of hours. The bedroom was in need of decoration as was the en-suite. The breakfast room was the best part of the hotel and the staff were excellent.

Great Hotel, brilliant staff. Nothing was too much trouble, even driving you in order to make an event. Breakfast was very varied, always hot and fresh. Has new internet facilities available for guests. I cannot recommend this hotel too highly for everyone. The atmosphere in the bar in the evenings was second to non and was very enjoyable.

I have read some of the reviews and was disappointed to see the bad ones as i think a bed and breakfast pretty much does what it says and if these people wanted such a high class of hotel then thats what they should of booked. My stay there was lovely i cant complain of anything really the staff were all lovely and friendly they made the effort to talk to you, the rooms were always kept tidy and clean. there were clean towels everyday and the ones we didn't use were re-folded and placed neatly on the bed, the pool was closed due to the time of the year so i cant comment on that. The owners came accross very approachable and if i had of had any problems i got the impression they'd do all they could to rectify it. The breakfast was always prompt and hot. I would definately stay there again and if we go back in June we will definately stay there. To anyone wanting a top class hotel please dont come here as you'll only spend your time complaining instead of appreciating its charm.
