Attended a wedding here 2nd Aug... poor service, poorly trained staff!!!! Poor manners, ran out of beer in evening!!! Dog poo in numerous places on croquet lawn which was part of planned events!!! Raking in thousands for this kind of service is shocking...filthy bathrooms and carpets that need ripping up!....beautiful setting spoilt by greedy governers....AVOID!

Room Tip: stay elsewhere...

I don't know quite what these people have against us, but their views do not in any way reflect the opinions of other guests at the Wedding, including the Bride & Groom who were very happy and indeed have since called in especially to thank us. There was indeed an issue about dog poo which was very unfortunate - never happened before and will never happen again. NOT our dog. The bathrooms are definitely not filthy and the carpets may be ageing but are not that bad; and indeed, we have recently added some very beautiful rugs. I sometimes think that when people come to a country venue with ancient buildings they somehow expect the interiors to be like something out of the IKEA catalogue (which has very unfortunately happened to many fine Regency buildings in London). This review in no way reflects the service we do give, which is perfectly good.

We have held three very special occasions at the castle, a wedding and two christenings, each one of them will hold very fond memories for everyone who attended. The owners of Bickleigh castle are passionate about their business and put everything into ensuring the event is perfect in every way. Set in beautiful surroundings with history, the castle offers a unique setting and I highly recommend it for any special occasion.

We will be back!!

We have just come back from the most delightful stay at this gorgeous Castle and we we're overwhelmed with it. We were lucky to have been given the Tudor Room , which is also the Bridal Suite, being able to have the Castle to ourselves once we locked the main door at night.

John showed us around once we had checked in and was so interesting to talk to with his vast knowledge of the history of the Castle and everything we could do to fully enjoy our few days here. From supplying a local map to pointing out the walk over the fields and the best pub to eat drink / eat in John made sure that my birthday was special.

We had ordered a full English for our first morning and found it to be more than adequate. Although we were a little surprised at the communal tables we didn't find it a problem and there was more than enough room for everyone . The staff were helpful and friendly each morning so no issues there.

We went on the Castle tour, even though we were the only ones staying in the Castle itself , and found it even more interesting than the day before . The chapel was beautiful and a real pleasure to be allowed into it. And we climbed the Tower for the view which was gorgeous.

The whole place was amazing, the history behind the Castle and the grounds made us feel very privileged to be able to stay there. The owners were more than happy for us to wander around at our leisure, we never felt uncomfortable and it felt like you were staying in a friends home.

I was a true Princess for a few days, which will never be forgotten. And it's a perfect place for a wedding....watch this space :)

Would we recommend it? Most certainly, very highly and without hesitation. And yes we will go back.

Room Tip: Can definitely recommend the Tudor Room

Stayed here for a 2 night break. We stayed in room 17 which overlooked the courtyard and the red carpeted area. Our room was tastefully decorated with an ensuite in the corner. At check-in you are given a map of the area showing nearby pubs, restaurants etc. So the first evening we walked up to the Trout Inn, about 12mins, and the food was wonderful.
Continental breakfast is included but you can upgrade to a hot breakfast at a small extra cost. There is a lounge area which also offers free wifi, comfortable sofa's and a bar. Robert offers castle tours alternate days so we did this after breakfast. He made it very interesting and even offered the optional extra of going up the spiral stairs to the top of the tower.
There are a few tables in the courtyard so the second evening we had a picnic with a view!
We would definitely recommend a stay here.

We stayed at Bickleigh Castle for 2 nights - 3 to 5 August 2014.

We had a warm welcome on arrival from Robert, present custodian of this beautiful hamlet.

Our room was in the thatched clock house which dates back centuries. We had original wooden beams above our comfy double bed. The room was airy and comfortable and furnished accordingly. The en-suite shower room was very modern and the shower was the best I have had. Our room overlooked the courtyard and moat with its white ducks and bull rushes.

There are several cottages in the courtyards and I'm sure all would be just as lovely.

Breakfast was served in the lovely wooden conservatory which is surrounded by the gardens and tennis courts.
Continental breakfast was ample but we could upgrade to something hot if we wished.

Free wifi is available in the lounge which also has a larger screen TV and sofas.

We weren't able to stay for the castle tour but the wedding picture in the brochure and features look lovely.

We had a walk across the field to Bickleigh Mill With its lovely but expensive gift shop. Next door to the mill is the Devon Miniature Railways Centre which does seem more for children but admittedly we didn't go in.

We also paid a visit or two to the Trout Inn and the Fisherman's Cot which are on the River Exe and in walking distance of Bickleigh Castle.

Would definitely recommend.

Room Tip: Ask for ground floor if you have difficulty with stairs as they are steep and uneven since they are...

We stayed in the bridal suite back in May and had a fantastic stay - the nearest thing to your own castle as you have your own wing!
My husband loves castles so he was in his element lol
You have a couple of pubs/restaurants within strolling distance

We will be returning
