Fantastic location, right on the edge of the cliff with a private access climb to the beach. It is on the main road into Bigbury-on-Sea but there is virtually no traffic at night.

Excellent food! Great wine! Very nice ambience in the dining room (ocean view) and the "drawing room" with lots of books. Only quibble: some of the other guests thought it was appropriate to converse by whispering to each other during dinner - which is kind of weird, but can hardly be blamed on the hotel.

I did not meet the host - except through his excellent cooking - but his German wife Petra was very charming and extremely helpful with tips regarding the area.

The room was small, but absolutely ok if you do not intend to spend a lot of time there. Perfect as a base for walks. Very clean.

Anything that was not perfect? Well, getting out of the parking area can be a tight squeeze, especially if you are used to having a parking aid in your regular car. Otherwise...it seems I once got the same napkin for breakfast as for dinner the night before, but hey...

Absolutely recommended!

Beautiful homely hotel (you have the run of the house) in a stunning location with fabulous hosts who are attentive but not overwhelming. The tastiest breakfasts ever.

This is the only hotel we would ever stay in now. The atmosphere is so relaxing and the hosts, Martin, Petra and Marika so friendly and kind. The food is always very good indeed and clearly freshly home cooked. The bedrooms and bathrooms are spotlessly clean and well equipped. The beds are very comfortable. The views from the hotel from the cliff tip location are so good that you will spend much time just gazing at the view! There are excellent walks, including over the tidal causeway to Burgh Island - or a lovely graden to sit in and watch the surfers in the sea below. Our little dog was made very welcome and immediately settled down in the comfortable and relaxing atmosphere. This is a place that once you have been, you will return again and again.

Room Tip: ALL of the rooms are lovely and have excellent views. Room 6 has a double aspect view - and lovely b...

This hotel is one of Devon's best kept secret's. From the main road you would never know it was there as the frontage is so unassuming, however it is certainly worth investigating. Do not let the fact that it is only 2 stars put you off, and certainly do not feel that room 6 is the only must have room. ALL the rooms are lovely and have sea views. The beds are so comfortable you don't want to get up. However, the breakfast is worth getting up for. Martin is a wonderful chef and all the food was delicious as it also was at the Journeys End Inn The coastal walking is fantastic. To sum up, this place has everything, ambience, good food, wonderful charming hosts, great views, great location. You couldn't ask for anymore. A+.

Room Tip: All rooms are excellent

This was a "Mother's Day" Treat and we were recommended to stay here as funds fell a little short for the Burgh Island Hotel! What a gem and how relaxing to view the bay from a cliff-side location and to stroll along the beach to the Pilchard Inn. The location is quite remote and it's perfect to unwind and relax and gain inspiration to write a Murder Mystery Novel ... it has that kind of feeling!

I stayed in Room 5 (single occupying a double) and found the bathrobe and tea/biscuits a wonderful little luxury. My Mum/Sister stayed in Room 6 and had 'double aspect' views out to the bay and a direct view of Burgh Island! Both rooms were tastefully decorated, clean, and quiet - we did not hear a peep.

Petra, Martyn and little "Marika" were the most hospitable and friendly hosts, one could ask for, where nothing is too much and for us, the real bonus, was having a wonderfully 'customised' breakfast which wasn't rushed and served on a buffet - everything was cooked to order and fresh ... a real exception in my B&B experience.

The only down side was having to travel by car to eat in the evening - it may be worthwhile to consider booking the HB option.

Eateries Close By:
- Beach Cafe (lunch only)
- Pilchard Inn (Friday night buffet curry, otherwise snack menu/lunch)
- Journey's End (5-6 miles away)
- Oystershack (4 miles)
- Kingsbridge (10 miles away)

Recommendation:
- Burgh Island for a Sunday Lunch (48 pounds p.person) that way you can visit the hotel without having to stay overnight, and it was worth every penny!

Room Tip: Room 6 (twin beds) have double aspect views!

Our fourth visit to this wonderful gem of a Hotel. As ever, the food was amazing, the hosts were captivating and the room felt like coming home! The bed in our room was a dream and made it hard to get up in the mornings. We were blessed with good weather so were able to take advantage of the very adventurous private steps to the beach and visit the island too. We will no doubt be back again next year.

My wife and I went there for an anniversary. Fed up with five star chain hotels, we decided to try something different. Thanks to Tripadvisor we found the Henley. We were not disappointed. We asked for the best room. Room 2. Very spacious, stylishly furnished with terrific views. Excellent quality and value In fact for a hotel of this size., The hotel benefits from fantastic views whether it is to Burgh Island, Bantham beach or the Estuary. Binoculars were provided in the room and the sitting rooms. Martyn and Petra, the owners combine well with Martyn in the kitchen and Petra front of house. Martyn's food is delicious, simple and well presented. Sure he could give those celebrity chefs a run for their money. Martyn and Petra made us both feel welcome from the moment we arrived with nothing being too much trouble. Bigbury itself has so much to do mutiple walks, the beach and an excellent golf course (managed to fit in a game despite it being our anniversary) - we will definitely be back.
