We celebrated my birthday down at Saunton Sands the first weekend in July and were blessed with fantastic weather which always helps! The hotel is in a stunning location looking over the beach and dunes and a drink on the terrace in the evening when the sun is setting is a delight not to be missed. On the plus side, the staff were all helpful and friendly and took time to chat, the room was pleasant, comfortable with a sea view and modern bathroom but a bit on the small side. Softer pillows could be looked at though! In general, I felt there was an air of faded glory about the place - the communal areas looked like they had seen better days. I think the 4 * rating must come about as a result of the facilities - indoor and out door pool for example and not because of the rooms and food. On the Saturday night we ate in the lounge area rather than the restaurant ( nobody explained that our rate included a meal in the restaurant both nights - we knew it was free on the first night) and I had some decidedly poor fish and chips ( my husband was happy with his meal). I did mention that I thought the fish was battered frozen and not fresh but was assured that it was fresh. If that was the case, the chef had ruined it. All in all a lovely venue but I think a 3* and not 4*

Stayed in a sea-view room for 4 nights dinner, bed & breakfast. Very good service as you'd expect from most Brend Hotels + lots of on site facilities. You can either eat inside in the restaurant, outside on the terrace or at the beach cafe which is owned by the hotel. Tried all three and was very pleased on all occasions. Breakfast is a self-service buffet which was adequate if not the best I've experienced with Brend Hotels.

The only real down-side was the in-house wi-fi service which was slow and kept breaking down. A large percentage of the guests come from the Home Counties and are down on breaks but have to do some work or be in touch with their companies. As a result a speedy and efficient wi-fi service in the rooms is essential and needs to be looked at. It would be lovely to always leave work behind but in this day and age the reality is somewhat different.

Overall, a lovely break at a hotel in a great location. If you like cycling, do try the Tarka Trail from Braunton to Torrington. Great fun and all traffic-free. Otherwise, enjoy the best of North Devon's lovely countryside and hospitality.

We booked a weekend (Friday to Monday) at this hotel to celebrate a birthday with our Son and daughter, and family. From the first contact , in January, the staff were helpful and co-operative. Our Daughter and Son in Law have two very young children and so the requirements were, at times, complicated. Every request was dealt with positively and with a can-do attitude.

We were lucky with the weather and so the perfect position with a view over Bideford Bay 9better than the med!) was wonderful. The rooms were well designed and laid out (although the bathroom in ours was "small but perfectly formed") and the public areas were equally well organised and decorated. A real seaside hotel, equally good for couples or families.

As with all of the Brend Hotels it is the staff that make staying at this hotel such a good experience. They are generally cheerful, capable, positive and thoughtful - not as common in hotel staff as one would wish. The food is imaginative, well cooked and excellently presented - and of course the restaurant location is perfect.

Niggles? When you have a 9 month old and a 3 and a half year old in the party food needs to appear reasonably promptly. After one lunch took an hour and a quarter to appear we "had a word", our comment was well taken and such delays did not recurr. Few hotels get everything right - the test is how they respond when they experience problems.

Overall, a wonderful Art Deco Hotel in The best location with super staff.

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view. Room 108/110/12 have the best balconies and some have comfortable sitting areas.

Just spent the weekend at the Saunton sands Hotel in North Devon. This hotel overlooks the magnificent Saunton beach. The staff are cheerful, helpful, infact nothing is too much trouble for them. Our Room was spacious, spotlessly clean and the beds comfortable, toiletries, tea and coffee making facilities with buiscuits and bottled water all proveded free of charge. Indoor and outdoor pools with gym etc., etc., etc., Excellent breakfast. Cannot praise this hotel enough. Not the cheapest hotel but worth every penny.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the beach, and look out for deals.

There are many aspects of this hotel which are v good, location, staff and some of the menu. I thought the breakfast was mediocre in choice of cereal cold meats etc and not up to many 4 star hotels I have stayed in. Some of the rooms need a refurb, such as the one I was in and it would be good if there was more honesty about that.

felt as a single person with a single booking I was given a bit of a second class deal.

Pool is great, big for a hotel and empty in early morning
