We have just returned from our 4th visit to The Woodlands at Brixham & now feel it is our second home. It is so welcoming, Paul & Rita, the proprietors, will go that extra mile to please you - both are very knowledgeable on the area of Brixham & can help plan each day of your stay.
Paul & Rita service the guest house by themselves, their standards are very high, the cleanliness & decor of the property reflects this.
On each of our four visits we have always booked the four-poster bedroom, the bay- fronted room allows for breathtaking views of Brixham harbour & beyond.
Breakfast is excellent, from the variety of what is on offer & the standard of cooking, preparation & service. It sets you up for the day.
The Woodlands is an ideal location to walk into Brixham (5 minutes), to sample some of the many seafood restaurants that occupy the harbour - "Simply Fish" is a new restaurant to add to the list & provides a great eating experience.
Looking forward to our next stay with Paul & Rita at The Woodlands & wouldn't hesitate to recommend The Woodlands as a great place to stay when visiting Brixham or the surrounding area.

When we traveled in southern England during August, 2 parents and 3 growing children we needed accommodation in the Torque bay area. The Internet sites showed a variety of English Guest houses and the Woodlands site was tempting and impressive. We booked 2 rooms for 3 nights and payed in advance for the first night.

We arrived in Brixham at around 8 p.m and were welcomed by Paul who directed us to the parking area in the rear of the house. That parking was challenging and some might find it dangerous. It is a steep hill and going up and down in the narrow dirt road was not an easy thing to do, especially in the dark.

Our 2 rooms were in the 3ed floor next to each other. Carrying our luggage there was hard work, as they are endless narrow stairs, but with young 15th years old children we managed. The beds were very comfortable and the view from our room was breathtaking. However the rooms were very small, the bathroom was tiny and the very small shower was a real challenge.

We have much preferred to have a descent curtain on the window so we will not have to wake up at the 6 a.m day light. Paul indicated it was never a problem, and we found it strange that peope love waking up on sun set every day.

Internet is free, however it works only in the living room on the lower floor. Not too convenient.

Breakfast is served between 8-9 a.m and if you are late the dining room is closed. We had full breakfast only once and it was very good. On our last day we wanted to leave at 11 a.m instead of 10.30, but we were not allowed. We came in late on the previous night and the children wanted to sleep until 10. That was disappointing too, as usually checkout is at 11 a.m or 12 p.m in the hospitality industry.

To sum up it was an expensive and not a specious accommodation for a family. On our way down with the luggage we saw Rita organising the rooms in the lower floors. They looked much more specious and inviting. So if you book the woodlands make sure not to get the 3ed floor rooms, unless you are singles, not too tall and certainly not fat.

Have a great time.

In response to this review - given that the gentleman is an executive in a famous international hotel firm who likes nothing but the best (see his profile) I am not surprised on some of his comments. The approach to the car park is steep but have never had anyone call it dangerous and many guest have used it over the years without any problems. As this family stayed in The Hilton prior to us it's obvious that hotel accommodation would of suited them better. Most bed and breakfast/guesthouses run on a different time schedule to hotels, this being breakfasts times being earlier and shorter, check-out earlier. Our guesthouse is 125 year old Victorian property to which we are lucky that all rooms offered are en-suite, we have never had anybody comment that our rooms are claustrophobic. Due to our location, Wi-Fi is accessible throughout the building but can cause difficulties in some rooms due to weather conditions. Unfortunately we cannot please everyone but luckily most are more than satisfied.

I stopped in the Chalet which is to that back of the site. It’s very nice and private. Has is own microwave, fridge and table chairs inside and out. Very nice and convertible when i finished work to enjoy a beer and sit in sun. Site has its own car park which is ideal for this area as is difficult near centre to get parking. Room was very confortable quite Large. Breakfast was very nice. Found the owners very nice easy to talk to.

Just returned from our 2nd stay at Woodlands. The hosts are excellent and the Guest House is spotlessly clean and good value for money (we have paid alot more for alot less in other places). Our room was a nice bright room with 4 poster bed and a bay window with views towards the harbour. Breakfast is very good with ample selection and served in a very pleasing room with views over Brixham. There is also a nice guest lounge and free parking. Located within a few minutes walk of the harbour and many restaurants, can highly recommend The Poopdeck for fresh seafood at reasonable prices.
