Brixham food has never been great, but you could always rely on this chippy to be top notch - when it was called Ziggy's - but alas not any more!

Used to make regular trips here even when not based locally, it was THAT good. Well cooked, nicely battered fish with that oh- so- freshly caught taste of the sea. Returned a couple of years back and didn't actually notice the name change as I just shot in and grabbed a seat, but a change in something was evident as soon as we tasted the food. When you've eaten haddock, chips and mushies in the sane place at least 30 times you know! I then noticed it was now 'Nicks' and the management seemed to have changed. I gave it several chances, but it just got worse. Fish not tasty, poorly cooked, batter poor. Chips hard, dry and ropey looking, no 'chip shop' freshness and wonderful smell. Portions tight for the expensive 'London plus" price. Staff amateurish, couldn't care less and probably way to young to understand or care. Teenage girls who were just supposed to serve, not cook, ended up trying to batter and cook fish as the owner/fryer was not there and clearly made a pig's ear of it. Not their fault but still .... whoever is in charge here has no pride to let this happen. When it was Ziggy's I recall seeing the same guy in there frying most times, and he was amazing!

Last visit sometime last year for take away. Despite being first person to walk in during a quiet midweek period out of season, I waited over 25 mins for 2 fish and chips. Chips were ready ahead of the fish and left in bag going cold. As nowhere to park, partner had to drive round block about 20 times whilst I waited when really he ought to have been able to collect me within 5 mins. When I got them home, they were poor and worse than some chippies in the London suburbs where fresh local fish, and tons of passing customers coupled with limited local food variety and competition, are not a luxury they enjoy - unlike this place. Cold, dry chips, overdone fish in horrid batter.

Considering it is by the sea and has fresh local fish, it is a poor advert for a fishing town. Pull your socks up, you have better ingredients than most chippies and yet make a worse meal! Such a shame. Seems from trying other chippies that Brixham has lost it in terms of fish and chips, despite it's wonderful supply of fish and endless customers for this great British tradtion. Not good enough. All I can say is the competition must be poor and yep, it sadly is! Very dissappointing considering fish and chips should be Brixham's bread and butter. I get the impression this place doesn't care as it's in a prime location and will do well regardless and does not even need repeat custom to survive, especially at those prices and tight fisted portions.

No more trips to Brixham then for me to eat in what used to be a lovely place full of fond memories. Amazing how little it takes to ruin a good thing, and how they can screw up such a simple thing too. Whoever ran Ziggy's, get him back please cos the fish frying man rocked!!! And if the Ziggy people ever read this, thanks for the great food and great memories, they are very special to us! I had a really romantic lunch in there would you beleive lol! and my partner and I would always look forward to returning.

Visited Brixham last week while on holiday to Bovey Tacey. Returned to Nick's Fish Bar to find same good quality but the staff had obviously had a bad morning- though very efficient were suffering from a charisma bypass or someone had upset them!

Staying in Brixham during a May Bank Holiday weekend and the age old early evening question "What shall we have to eat?" needs answering. After a busy day doing tourist type things a lazy takeaway option fits the bill.

Walking into Nick's Fish Bar you could feel it was the tail end of Bank Holiday trading, the service was flat & matter of fact. However staff probadly tired so no big deal.
Foodwise we ordered large cod x2 and shared 1 large chips. The fish was nice, decent chunky fillet with thin crispy batter but very small for the price. Again with the chips very small portion (good for your health but if you have been walking all day it is nice to get the portion you paid for)

So overall not bad & not great - 6/10
