I cannot believe that a hotel in this day and age advertises their rooms on a per person basis. I had somebody else book the room for my wife and at what we thought was £70 a night for the room (this would have been a reasonable price considering the state of the hotel). The hotel also insisted on a deposit per room (not per person). We were shocked when we came to check out and were told that the balance was based upon £70 per person per night totalling £280 for the two nights. Not only was this a shock but a joke considering the state of the place. It was like a rest home, very dated and unclean. We even had dogs in the room next to us howling in the morning. The rooms were tired and in need of a good modernisation especially the shower facilities.
The staff did not seem to care about the price confusion and insisted they wrote to the person who booked it (which does not help us). I feel the hotel prices the rooms like this to catch people out, not fair and certainly not in keeping with current hotel methods of pricing (B&Bs maybe). The hotel claimed to be a 3 star, I am not sure how. I frequently use hotel throughout the UK and Europe and have never been so disappointed. I hope the hotel will consider my views and rectify the problems as the location and building is fabulous and it is a real shame the hotel is not within keeping.

It is of real concern to see a review such as this one. The customer came as part of a group of people the booking having been made by another group member. The rate was clearly stated when the booking was made and was confirmed in writing. In addition, the guest was presented with a key card on arrival describing the booking and showing the tariff booked at.
Bearing in mind the fact that all of this was confirmed I do not see what else could have been done, and can but wonder why, bearing in mind the confirmation was sent in the spring that if concerned about the tariff quoted therein the question was not raised immediately.
The guest made no other complaint whatsoever until he realised that we were not prepared to address his issue regarding tariff. It can be seen from the photographs and the vast majority of reviews here and elsewhere that most customers think rather differently.

Although we have never actually stayed in Berry Head Hotel, over the 28 years we have been visiting Brixham, we have eaten many times in 'The View' brasserie. The setting of the hotel and restaurant is brilliant and the views are spectacular. Over the years, menus and decor have changed and standards have been average and high. I have to say that on our last visit, in late September, the staff and chef excelled themselves. We visited on a busy Friday evening. The staff were efficient, polite and friendly and the food was exquisite. We had a thoroughly enjoyable meal and look forward to our next visit.

We would highly recommend this charming family run hotel. Friendly staff made us welcome from arrival with tea on the terrace where we were introduced to the stunning views across Torbay. The weather was lovely during our stay. If it had been poor the same views could have been enjoyed from both the bar and the picture windows in the dining room.
Our en suite room was large, comfortable and immaculate when we arrived and the staff kept it that way during our 4 night stay.
There was an excellent choice on the Table D’Hote menu and the meals were well cooked and presented. The mango sorbet had to be experienced. After the evening meal we had coffee in the wood panelled resident’s lounge where we chatted with other guests, very relaxing. The hotel had the feel of walking into a country house we discovered it is a listed building.
The location was ideal. The Devon coastal path ran to the side of the grounds and it was a 15 minute gentle walk to the fort on Berry head and its tea shop. Brixam a delightful fishing port and Marina was 15minutes walk in the other direction where you can catch a boat or bus to Torquay Dartmouth and Totness.

I stayed at this hotel earlier this year having previously stayed with my boyfriend but this time i was had a night out with the girls.

My room was very clean and tidy and I also had a lovely sea view room with a balcony. It was wonderful to be able to look over the Bay.

During my break I found that the staff were very helpful and friendly. The food was lovely too, having had a great meal in the restaurant and also in the Brasserie.

I would recommend this hotel to anyone who wants to enjoy beautiful views across Torbay with friendly staff and good service.

A very well run hotel - witnessed manager/owner(?) seeking input from staff. Obviously a finger is kept on the pulse. Every member of staff was a pleasure to interact with and they were not going through the motions but were genuine.

Mealtimes were relaxing and the food top quality. A table is allocated for the evening with no hurry to move on through and I liked being shown to my table and also having breakfast cooked to order. The best breakfasts in a hotel that we have ever experienced.

It is known that the rooms are not palatial but the view more than makes up for that. I was surprised that a previous contributor spoke negatively about the towels - we had full size bath sheets. Often hotels seem to short cut on this sort of detail but not the Berry Head.

We would not hesitate to return to this hotel - it is very memorable for all the right reasons.

In my opinion, The Berry Head Hotel has one of the finest coastal locations in the United Kingdom. The views from the terrace are wonderful, the sun-sets breathtaking. It is impossible not to be impressed by the history and magnificence of the building and surrounding Berry Head National Nature Reserve.

The management and staff are genuinely kind and attentive. Nothing is too much trouble. This is customer care as it used to be. A pat on the back to all concerned.

Our bedroom had a comfortable bed, was clean, tidy, well appointed with a stunning view.

A meal in the restaurant is an unrivalled experience. A previous Trip Advisor Review complained of the length of time it took to be served. Personally, I am happy to wait between courses to have time to take in the view across Torbay from the panoramic windows. However, I have never felt service to be excessively slow. This is a time to be enjoyed, not rushed. If you want quick food, go to McDonalds.

Whilst trying to maintain its original character, the hotel, along with its staff, is a real gem. Can't wait to go back.

Thank you, Stuart & Jackie, (From York)

We have just come back from our honeymoon after getting married at berry head hotel it was amazing more than you can wish for. My family live in torbay and so we regularly visited the hotel for food and family gatherings over the years , it's a special place we don't like box rooms all the same like these big chains have berry head is unique so that's why we booked our big day with them. It is such a friendly hotel very professional but also made us feel like they really cared about us as customers , we had lots of friends and family who had bedrooms for the weekend and luckily they all loved the hotel too, food was great some trendy ideas mini cream tea and fish and chips we chose for canapes and pink bubbly for arrival, main course local beef and eton mess for dessert yum! I could go on and on but to sum it up our honeymoon hotel in hong kong was very posh but didn't have the atmosphere of berry head and Bali 5 star hotel location on beach but boring view in comparison and 5 stars bedroom not as nice , if only Devon had the same weather as bali! Can't wait to go away again
