“The perfect romantic break”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 July 2011

Step back in time - no mobile signal, no TV, just stunning views, the romance of the creeping tide forming the island twice a day, and exceptionally good food and cocktails. Embrace the atmosphere - black tie for gents, tea dresses and gowns for ladies. Go in period with flapper dresses, sequins, feathers, and boas.
We have stayed here once for the most fabulous lost weekend, and recently came back for dinner. The hotel and chef were truly exceptional at catering for my partner's extremely restricted diet, creating custom canapés, starter, and main at very short notice. Service above and beyond our expectations. We will come back again and again, so many rooms to experience and we must swim in the fabulous Mermaid Pool. Service exceptional from the Maitre d' and his staff and the perfect Gary McBar.
Think of this hotel as a time warp, a theme park of Thirties decadence if you like. It is not a luxury cookie cutter 5 star experience you can get in any major city, it is truly unique.

I have just returned from a stay at burgh island and had a wonderful experience, the location is amazing I live in the south hams and chose burgh island as a venue to propose to my girlfriend and was not disappointed. A special thanks to nick the manager and his team they make everyone there feel relaxed and at home, nothing is to much trouble for them and all done with a genuine smile and zest.
The food is excellent, breakfast on the terrace is the sun is not to be missed. My favourite place in the hotel is the mermaid pool it's so romantic and nick was kind enough to arrange candles and champagne after-dinner for my big moment, I am sure this location swayed her to agree.
A wonderful glamourous place, which captures the romance and splendour of a bygone era, everyone should visit at least once! we will be again and again.

We have just returned from a two night stay at Burgh island as part of our honeymoon.
It’s an amazing place to stay - I feel that those giving negative comments have simply not entered into the spirit of the hotel. The whole experience, right from being given instructions to meet the driver who will carry your luggage and transport you across the sand and back again was absolutely magical and we cannot wait to return.
It’s difficult to single any one thing out. Our room Fruity Metcalfe was a joy, gloriously sunny and impeccably cleaned with robes, facecloths, toiletries etc. All meals were fantastic (particularly the scallops and oysters) from the canapes to the petits fours, the coffee and tea wonderful and plentiful, the cocktails sharply perfect, all the staff we met, and I think we met most, were helpful, friendly and attentive. Yes Gary’s cocktails are devilishly good as is his patter! The location is stunning and seems to maintain a sunny microclimate compared to the mainland. We couldn’t fault a thing!
I would recommend Burgh Island to those willing to join in the atmosphere, dress for dinner and appreciate the slower pace of life - definitely no mobile reception here - but who cares! Yes the rooms are expensive, but the price does include a scrumptious breakfast and a high class three course meal plus canapes and chocs which would surely cost a chunk on its own. You have to take that plus the authenticity and remote location into account and let yourself go back in time and you will have a fantastic time.

Arriving at this Island is like stepping back in time and leaving all your cares and worries across the water. The welcome from the driver who collected us was warm and friendly if only we could say the same for the staff on reception. We found them very cold and impersonal. When we asked for information on availability for July it was as if the lady couldn't be bothered and was very sharp. I'm a confident person but I didn't approach her again. When we came to pay our very large bill, this hotel is not cheap, another lady on the desk didn't even ask if we had enjoyed our stay or encourage us to come back. She quickly produced vouchers for our bar bill which we were not really given time to check and we did subsequently discover that we had been charged too much. The restaurant and bar staff more than made up for them though and the food was fabulous. We stayed in The Cunard Room which was very comfortable and although no sun in the afternoon the balcony was a bonus. The decor itself is in places faded and the balconies could do with a lick of paint, I just hope they don't use the same sloppy decorator who painted the blue walls in the bar area. The outdoor cushions are worn and faded adding to the feeling of a faded grandeur throughout. The corridors are tatty and dull. The breakfast was wonderful and set out in a truly lovely room. There is little if any information to be found there about the hotel, no reference to its history current ownership or the Poirot connection. Overall I gained the impression that the owners whoever they are feel that they don't have to market this hotel, perhaps they are recession proof. We will go back as this is a stunning location. It could be made even better without spoiling the overall ambience. Just a few small touches and the review would sky rocket.

Thank you for your detailed review and we have noted and taken on board your comments, which are helpful. With regard to marketing the hotel, I am slightly surprised, as the history of the hotel is everywhere from the architecture to the archive pictures on the walls. Staff are also all fully conversant with the history of the Island and only too happy to rattle off anecdotes (usually over cocktails). I can absolutely assure you that we in no way feel recession proof and are working constantly on an on-going programme of painting, repair and general works which the location - and our standards - demand. We hope that we will, indeed, welcome you back for many happy days in the future.

My husband and I stayed at the Burgh Island Hotel in mid June and really did have a fantastic stay. Food was great, staff were lovely, house band were amazing and the ambience was terrific. However, considering we were paying £500 per night, we felt there were just one or two details that need to be attended to. On checking in, we were asked if we would like tea/coffee etc to be brought to our room in the morning along with a paper before we made our way to the Dining Room for breakfast. Nice touch we thought and great opportunity just to chill out. However, on the first morning, the tea arrived but the newspaper did not and we had to ask again and on the second morning, the paper did not arrive at all and we picked it up on our way to breakfast. Also - communication between staff did not seem to be brilliant. We did not want a formal dining experience on the Friday night because it was the end of the working week and we just wanted to be a bit more relaxed. We ended up having our own private room in the Captains Nest which was perfect for us. The staff were wonderful - good conversation and very attentive and the food was outstanding. However, my husband had expressly stated when he had called to book (and even called a few days before we went to underline the point) that on the Saturday night, we would be dining formally. This information again did not seem to be passed on and a table was setup for us again in the Captains Nest. When we pointed out that we had requested to be in the dining room, a table was setup and again the staff were fabulous but we felt that our table had been setup as a last minute consideration. It didn't particularly matter as our weekend was great but there are just some details missing that, for the money, mean this is a good hotel and not a great one and it has the potential to be a GREAT hotel. We felt these were:

- no robes or slippers in the room
- had to ask for the newspaper after details had been taken
- had to call down for a facecloth as none were in the room
- sometimes haphazard communication between the staff
- our suite (Avon) looked over the Garden Suite - well the gardens were shocking. I would have bitterly disappointed it we had stayed there. We know that beautiful gardens abound in the South Hams but these resembled a barren wasteland. We felt that in general, the grounds needed to be spruced up a bit.

These are all quite picky points and I would like to stress that we did have a wonderful time and we will definately return - if only for the lively chat from Gary the barman, the superb food and cocktails! As I have said though, the hotel charges top dollar and one or two tweaks here and there would raise the game :-)

Room Tip: Avon was beautiful with a shared sundeck

Thank you for taking the time to write about your stay and we are delighted that you enjoyed your visit. We regret that you left the Hotel with niggles and wish we could have addressed them properly during your stay. We are pleased that the confusion over your table on the second evening was sorted out to your satisfaction. Housekeeping was obviously careless during your stay as there are always robes and facecloths supplied with the towels as standard and we will address why that happened. One point we would urge all visitors to consider is that this is an island – this is the charm of the location but it does have implications. It means, for example that newspapers don’t get to the village post office before 8-8.30a.m. and so can only be delivered with tea trays after this time and we are sorry if this was not clear for you. It also means that we are severely limited in our planting and our Grounds Manager, Nick, has worked tirelessly to introduce native and hardy plants to the grounds which will survive the sometimes windy and always salty atmosphere. He is passionate about the Island’s micro-climate and always willing to show guests his work (yes, even his polytunnel, where he is growing the more delicate plants). We sincerely hope you do return and take a tour of the Island with Nick, as well as enjoy cocktail chat with Gary “McBar”.

Have just returned home after a fantastic weekend at Burgh Island. A long awaited trip which exceeded all our expectations. Celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary we arrived at the hotel car park, to be driven across the sand bank to the island. If you love a little bit of history and faded grandeur, you'll love it. We stayed in the Beach House which Edward and Mrs Simpson used when staying at the hotel, as it is more private and very romantic. We had our own private patio with the waves lapping underneath. The staff couldn't have been more friendly and helpful, the food was lovely and the cocktails were deadly! Watch out for Gary the barman! We will definitely go back but with a few friends next time. Dinner was all couples and felt a little bit like valentines night. You can make friends though and as we had the Beach House ended up having a party till 3.30am in the morning. Thanks to our new friends for helping make it such a special weekend!

We stayed here 15 years ago & had a wonderful stay. It was under different ownership & importance was given to customer service from minute one. With happy memories, I called to book 3 suites for 3 days in the week of 27 June for a small family reunion with my visiting family from the US. 3 suites for 5 people. The individual who introduced himself as the manager was reluctant to speak beyond the curt yes/no. I asked if I had interrupted his afternoon nap, to which he said he could not afford talking for "hours and hours". He had other things to do. If the owners are reading this, I suggest you may review his performance. You have just lost a few thousand £s in bookings.

Madam, the Owners are indeed reading this and note as follows: a) you have not stayed with us for 15 years, b) our Manager to whom you spoke, Hugh Turner, is more than courteous and immediately reported the aggressive nature and tone of your call to the hotel yesterday, c) we suggest this was written in the same malicious vein as your call was made and we cannot understand your motivation.
