“Fantastic for a short break”
Reviewed 2 August 2014

Our daughters treated my wife and myself to a stay at the hotel as a wedding anniversary present.Everything about our stay was perfect, from the friendly and efficient attitude of the staff down to the smallest detail in our room which was furnished in the Art Deco style as are all the guest rooms and the hotel in general. It was wonderful to sit in the cocktail bar before dinner, men in their evening suits, ladies looking stunning sipping cocktails and listening to a quartet playing thirties music.Dinner was served at a leisurely pace with music being played just loud enough to be enjoyed but not annoying. The hotel is situated in a superb position on the island the views are wonderful and there are some lovely walks.I rate this hotel very highly. One downside,if you need good wi fi connection it is very weak in the hotel unless you are standing next to reception.

Thank you for your glamorous review. I always appreciate a chap in black tie and it's nice to hear a round of applause for the glamorous women. Wifi is restricted by our heavy duty 1920s concrete framework - tried and tested weather proof however - and by our bandwidth. So, perhaps a digital detox or a sneaky half hour on the BB before cocktails? We're all really impressed by your daughters' thoughtfulness and hope that you might return, with them maybe, in the future.

We have just returned from our third visit to this lovely Hotel. The setting and views from the Island are breathtaking. The weather was kind and we swam in the Mermaid pool and played tennis. We also sampled the charming Pilchard Inn. We were happy that the magic of this place remains the same. The food is excellent, the staff friendly and helpful, and the decor is captivating. Could I fault anything? The only minor criticism was that there were no parasols to accompany the sun loungers and the loungers themselves were in need of maintenance. We had lovely weather but wanted some shade without going indoors. Would we return - without a doubt!

Thank you for your kind review. Parasols? We have received our annual delivery rather later this year - you can imagine they need to be made bespoke to deal with the climate even for one summer. I'm sorry they weren't available for your visit in July as they usually would be (and it has been a glorious summer here). We hope to welcome you here for visits 4, 5 and 6 over the coming years.

We stayed at the hotel with 2 friends in July 2014, we were really looking forward to it as we had been planning the trip for ages. We arrived early and were directed to the car park and taken across the causeway in a 4 x 4 by a very nice man who assured us we were in for a BIG ADVENTURE. We arrived at the hotel and the check in was ok but the Eastern European receptionist did leave us standing around and we did not know where to go so the guy who drove us showed us up to our respective accommodation. We were blown away with the rooms it was everything that we had imagined and more. We spent the afternoon by the Mermaid Pool which is wonderful, the hotel is wonderful and we were loving it all soaking up the experience. We went for a drink in The Pilchard Inn and went on The Sea Tractor it was all we had hoped for. We all dressed up and we went to town buying accessories matching the era. We went for cocktails and canapés in the peacock bar around 6:45 and gave our dinner and wine order to the waiter.
The food was delicious and we thought that the old guy on the piano would not make it to the end of the tune never mind until the wee small hours - we were nearly right on one count anyway. The website promises 20's style entertainment and we were thinking The Great Gatsby well how wrong can you be the old guy and the 2 non matching girl singers were just about fit for a Nursing Home - we realise that there are older clientele at this establishment but not everyone has one foot in the grave, there was a wedding party dining that evening and if that was the entertainment at my wedding I would have been seriously disappointed. We really thought that these were the warm up act and we were expecting "THE BAND" to come on after the meal but to our shock we discovered that these tired entertainers were "THE BAND" and we were asked to vacate the ballroom around 10:45 where we were shooed into the bar where there was no music and a flat atmosphere, the wedding party has gone to the snooker room as there was no music in the bar - we went to get our I Pod and had our own music - shocking when you are paying £450 per night - it's not as if we were all dressed up and had somewhere else to go this place is exclusive but that is the downfall. I know they rely on repeat visitors but we are in our 40's and 50's and we would be future guests but based on our visit that would never happen again, we also have a lot of friends who were waiting to find out about our experience I am afraid we had to be truthful about the so called "party night" but the hotel is beautiful.
We asked at reception if we could spend the next day taking photos and having a look around the island and they said no problem but when we paid our bill we were told that we had to leave as the sea tractor had broken down, I know these things happen but we were virtually given no choice leave now or find your own way across the causeway - we felt that it could have been handled better and we felt that once we had paid they had no interest in us any longer. It was such a shame as all our expectations were met up until the evening entertainment (Pennies from Devon) began which seriously needs reviewing by the owners. The money the 4 of us spent on that little break would have taken us to New York which is where we are going next I know The Rainbow Rooms will have better entertainment and they won't throw us out at 10:45pm.

Thank you for your extensive post. I will say, immediately, that I have apologised in person about our band on that evening. The line up has been performing with us for many years and, out of loyalty, we have kept their gigs but recently we have dropped them from the line up as they are due a well deserved retirement. I would like to quote from your own response to my email exchange with you, before you made this post:
We really appreciate you talking the time out to reply and we would revisit Burgh Island again as we did have a fantastic time up to the evening entertainment and the early exit from the ballroom, if as you say the entertainment was improved and we certainly hoped we would be dancing until after midnight. We realise that the project of a hotel like this is an enormous undertaking and a big financial commitment and we were happy to pay the rate for the experience and we would be happy to come again as the only blot on the evening was the entertainment and we could not fault much else, we do realise that the tractor incident was unfortunate and could not be helped and it must be a stressful time when this happens.
I would always rather deal directly and immediately with any dissatisfaction before taking to a public forum.

Quite unique - steeped in Art Deco throughout. For a special treat, special birthday or anniversary this cannot be beaten. The service and cuisine are simple superb. You park your car in a covered secure garage and luggage is transferred to a black range-rover, when, depending on the state of the tide you are driven directly over a sand spit to the hotel, bags delivered directly to room - or, if the tide is in, via an intermediate, and unique sea-tractor. Special memories are of dressing formally for dinner with a preamble of cocktails and canapes. We thought it suberb throughout, but there are a minority who will find fault with e.g.small bathrooms, lack of horse riding facilities!! The vast majority will find Burgh Island a very special place, where one is treated as a special person.

Room Tip: Mountbatten has excellent views over both land and sea.

Thank you Richard for your super review and I appreciate your taking the time to post. Based on the previous review but one I'm grateful for your endorsement of our black tie dinners. They're not compulsory (and many guests choose a curry night option on the Friday) but they do mark a difference between Burgh and any other hotel, I think, in the UK. Loving your horse riding comment - actually, we can arrange this with a local livery but it's not so much in demand these days. Our pleasure is, indeed, to know all of us guests and be an attentive but unobtrusive backdrop to your stay.

This was the second 2 day visit in 2 years to celebrate my birthday. We had a wonderful time meeting some very nice people and enjoying superb food. On Saturday we danced to Pennies from Devon until 11pm with lots of couples joining in the fun. Again Gary "McBar" mixed some magical cocktails and all the staff were very friendly and efficient with nothing proving to be too much trouble. The weather was excellent so we were able to make good use of the mermaid pool to swim, relax on the excellent new decking, or take the dingy round the pool. On Sunday friends came to visit for lunch which we enjoyed on the terrace. They were made very welcome and we had a great afternoon by the pool before sampling a delicious cream tea. This year we stayed in the Mountbatten room which had great views over the beach and was decorated with a perfect period feel. A great experience which we are sure to repeat.

Thank you Linda for your lovely review and for visiting us a second time. I am fond of the Mountbatten Room - it featured in the David Suchet Poirot episode of Evil Under the Sun and the views are some of the best in the hotel. I'm impressed that you sampled the full delights of the Mermaid Pool (dinghy and all) so early in the season and your comments are most welcome, about the staff and Gary in particular. See you next year, we hope.

Our 5th visit to Burgh Island hotel. 1st visit was when our children were small & we were marooned on the island as the sea tractor had broken down. The hotel at that point was being use as holiday apartments & not far from being derelict, but the Art Deco influence was still in evidence.
Following the renovation, we have visited for lunch & stayed 3 times.
Yes, it is expensive but worth every penny. We like to stay about every 4 years & save up for it.
Okay, we could probably have an 'all-inclusive' week in Spain for less, but, as a friend said, I wouldn't have enthused about that so much.
The food & service are outstanding & Gary is a great asset to the hotel.
It's lovely to dress for dinner & the trio on the Saturday,we were there, were excellent.
Some of the interior decor needs a bit of attention, but this tends to be in the corridors, not in the rooms.
Looking forward to our next visit.

Room Tip: We stayed in Cunard this time, with good views of the sea & mainland.

Thank you for your lovely and loyal review. We enjoy having you as one of our "regulars" too. I hope you sent time on the huge balcony in Cunard - largest in the house. If you first came in the '70s/80s when the hotel was in a sad state, albeit with it's architectural bones, you'll notice the huge changes. Next time you visit please bring any pictures you may have of that time; I'm trying to build an archive for future generations to enjoy.

We booked 2 nights at the hotel to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary and were hoping that it would live up to our expectations. We were looking forward to dancing to the BBC light, period decor and some fine dining.
Well, we have to say that everything was as we hoped it would be and we had the most wonderful time. Every member of staff was polite and efficient, the food was superb, the room (Fruity Metcalf) was excellent and the whole experience was most enjoyable.
We have decided to make this an annual event. Let's just pray the weather is as good as it was this time.

Room Tip: We can only say Fruity Metcalf was very good, with a wonderful view, shared balcony and great bathro...

Thank you for your lovely review. I trust that you wore buckets of pearls, in honour of your anniversary and in keeping with the period. We're all delighted that you are making this a repeat event and look forward to welcoming you next year. Gary will remember your favourite cocktail.
