A lovely hotel with fantastic staff that were proactive rather than reactive. On arrival, when shown around and given the gourmet (6 course) menu that we had booked for that evening to read I happened to comment on the main course being pork = coals to new castle in that we breed rare breed pigs - said nothing further. On coming down to dine we were offered an alternative main course with no prompting. The wines to accompany each course were spot on, the staff attentive without being intrusive. Breakfast was wonderful - I enjoyed my smoked haddock (no died stuff here) and Simon polished off his full English in quick time. Our superior room was clean, tidy and bright - the bed soft and the bath oh so deep! Although the hotel is dog friendly I have to say they went above and beyond yet again as even our Great Dane was made welcome and loved his time in the bar and all the attention he received and seeing him loping over the grounds was wonderful. Would we visit again? Without doubt - hope to be back in September and celebrate out 23rd wedding anniversary there. My only regret is that i forgot my camera!

Room Tip: The Monkleigh superior room is good for dogs - right near the fire escape (if your dog can cope with...

Lovely looking hotel in a stunning location. Everything looked a little tired and i thought it smelt a little musty in the lounge area. Very friendly and help full staff but no one at reception was a bit strange.
The major let down was the evening meal it could have been amazing but unfortunately the chef had failed to season the food leaving it bland and disapointing,
I would imagine this was once a very good hotel all the awards are in the breakfast room but its not 2005 any more probably time to take these down and try and improve what you have there now.
On a positive note the sausage at breakfast was very good

We stayed for a couple of nights and even though I wasnt feeling well it was a wonderfully relaxing experience. The food was lovely and wandering round the grounds listening to the bird song and the silence behind it was vastly refreshing. The staff were lovely and couldnt do enough for you. Super, really great.

We needed a break and this was the ideal spot. We stayed for two nights Dinner, bed & breakfast. On the first night we had the gourmet dinner which was great! Service was excellent and we felt really spoilt. The second night we went for the standard set menu it too was great. The breakfasts are really great too! It's a lovely setting. Our only concern is that the building and grounds are looking as if it needs a bit of care. This does not affect enjoyment, and so long as there are plans to keep the buildings and grounds tidy in the very near future then it will continue to be a fabulous location.

We stayed here for the night of my 40th birthday & thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The room was lovely, but the 7 course meal was absolutely delicious! Friendly staff. They weren't aware of my big birthday until we booked in, but they made the special effort to decorate our table when we came down to dinner, which was a lovely touch. The wine matches with each course were spot on! We were kindly given an extra glass in between courses (to guess what it was) as it was a special birthday, which was fun, as a lot of the guests on the other tables joined in the banter! Would definitely recommend & would love to go back again!

The are plenty of good things to say about this hotel. Not least the peaceful, beautiful grounds and pleasant, helpful staff. Rooms in the carefully integrated new building are spacious and comfortable. I read other reviews about having to ring a bell when you arrive, but I didn't see the problem given it's a small country house and not a large busy London hotel. I can't imagine it's worth anyone's time to simply stand and wait for guests!

There are one or two small quirks that we came across which were not quite as good as they could have been, for example the sound proofing between one of the rooms was very poor, however when discussed with the manager the problem was rectified immediately, efficiently and positively. We enjoyed a good and relaxing meal at the hotel on one of the nights although we felt the price per head was a little on the high side in comparison to similar establishments. We thought around£35 per head would have been about right rather than £45. We also thought blackout blinds would be a welcome addition to the rooms facing the gardens as the sun is bright first thing and we didn't sleep long on any morning because of that.

It's a quaint place with old fashioned charm and character. If we found ourselves in that part of the world again, we would go back. Oh, and it's an ideal place to hire out for a wedding. I can't think of a better venue.
