“Idyllic and memorable”
Reviewed 18 October 2009

Living in London, we wanted to get away from it all, so I searched for a while on the internet to find the perfect weekend hideaway. I eventually found Tor Cottage, and although the prices were a little bit higher than what I originally budgeted for, I am extremely pleased we decided on going in the end. It really was the perfect weekend getaway.

The valley the cottage is situated in is wonderful and we enjoyed our walks around the acres. We managed to visit dartmoor park and the eden project and a had a memorable trip to a little town called Pentewan. :)

Maureen is a wonderful host and cooks delicious breakfasts, and made us feel very comfortable. The rooms are all very private and each have lovely decor. We stayed in the Craftsman's Deco which was just sublime, with lots of features and items to look at, including what seemed to be a working gramaphone! (but with no records). Next time we will try to stay in the laughing waters. And there definitely will be a next time.

I'm not sure what else I can write without describing the entire weekend. I can guarantee you wont be disappointed at all though. Also, I would only recommend staying if you are coming by car.

We stayed at Tor Cottage for 3 nights on our way down to Cornwall and I'm so glad we did. After driving up the very bumpy long drive to the property we were welcomed by the sight of the most spectacular established and well kept gardens with a little stream running through it and I felt immediately at home.
We met Maureen the lovely owner who showed us to our room and showed us round all the other rooms as we were the first to arrive. They were all fantastic - really spacious with log fires and comfy armchairsand outside space to sit. They all have a seperate kitchen area with fridge and tea and coffee making facilities and lovely shower rooms. We stayed in the Craftsman Garden room which was very comfortable but I'd like to go back at least twice to try out the others, it's a good excuse.
Maureen is very proud of her pool which is heated to 84 degrees. The pool area has a pool house with fridge, freezer and microwave so you need not move from there all day unless you want to.
Breakfast was taken on the terrace overlooking the valley - fresh berries, homemade muesli (she gave me the recipe and we've eaten it for breakfast every day since we're home), kedgeree, the full Monty etc. Very good. We had the tray supper in our room one evening which was really good but needs to be ordered well in advance because the fresh local ingredients need to be ordered in.
Maureen will advise on and book your evening meal for you and knows all the best local eateries and which places are open when, there are some sample menues at reception.

We arrived on Friday afternoon and were greeted as part of the family Maureen despite not being very well made us feel so welcome. We stayed in the Craftsmans Cottage and it was delightful, with a stream running outside and a log fire to greet us in a superb facility quite beyond our greatest expectations. An evening meal at Peter Tracy completed the start of what was to be a memorable weekend. The weather although not brilliant allowed us to enjoy the delights of Tor Cottage and many delights of Tavistock including the lovely Panier Market. Saturday and Sunday passed far too quickly but again delightful, leaving on Monday was a wrench but a delightful memory has been created for us.

You can't possible imagine how amazing this place is. Maureen, the owner, goes out of her way to make you feel welcome. She even baked us a chocolate cake! We have twins due in 3 months so this was our last get away. We stayed in the Garden room which is so beautiful and romantic - wood burner, beams. Breakfast has to be seen to be believed. Full Monty it was but with organic fruit, the special home made musli, home made bread. The location is stunning with acres and acres of land. Maureen booked us into the Horn of Plenty restaurant (1/2 pice on Mondays) which was posh and very tasty. Best though was the Peter Tavy - go for the Beef & stilton Pie. You can't go wrong with Tor cottage - book it now!

What a wonderfull place to stay, an original boutique bed and breakfast.
The owner Maureen Rowlatt has completely transformed a run down farmhouse and out buildings into a luxurious place to stay.
All rooms are themed, breakfast is wonderfull, Maureen owns the whole valley so you are not overlooked or disturbed and if relaxation is what you need this is the place.

Fantastic! We only phoned to book on our way down but no problem to accomodate. Loved the fact that it is off the beaten track and no signposts.
Maureen was a warm, welcoming and helpful hostess!
Quiet and charming. Service was great. All the little touches were appreciated as well.
We got engaged here and could not think of a nicer place in the UK.
Hopefully we'll be back and for longer next time - so much to do in this area, from walks on the moors, fantastic pubs with great food, village markets and of course just a great place to unwind.

Stayed at Tor Cottage for a long weekend at the beginning of March. The accommodation was luxurious and very clean. The location was very good too being situated at the bottom of a valley.

There were only 2 cons for me. Firstly, the road to the cottage is quite difficult and resembles a dirt track so be sure to give your tyres a thorough check before embarking down this road. Secondly, and more importantly for me, the breakfast is only available between 08.30 and 09.00. After a long drive down on the Friday it would have been good to have had a lie in until 09.30 on the Saturday morning. I felt the breakfast time could have been a bit more flexible.

There are lots of interesting places to visit nearby and lots of good places to eat :))
Would probably come back here again but only for a special occasion as it's a bit pricey at £140 per night.
