“Superb!”

We booked the hotel for my wife's 50th birthday celebration and had the entire place to ourselves and our 200 guests. Right from the very start, we found the owners' attention to detail perfect - nothing was too much trouble. We asked if the function room could be decorated and when we saw it, it was a knock out!

The hotel is set in pretty grounds with stunning views up towards Dartmoor. For those of us who stayed in either the hotel itself or the cottage in the grounds, the rooms were great and the food really good. Our room was plush with a balcony overlooking the grounds and a four poster!

Perfect - can't wait to go back!

We found it fairly easily although the access road was a typical Devon lane; however, we had no problems with access throughout our stay. Set in extensive grounds that include a large, quirkily landscaped garden and with a backdrop of Southern Dartmoor, it provided us with an ideal base from which to explore Devon and the neighbouring counties of Cornwall, Somerset and Dorset.

Our four night stay was pleasant and peaceful. We were warmly welcomed on arrival and immediately shown to our room. This was an attractively decorated double room with ensuite (shower, sink & toilet). They were cleaned daily and clean towels were also provided daily. A nice touch was the complimentary toiletries and the hot drink making facilities with biscuits. (Latter also replenished daily.) There was ample, clean storage space and generous supply of hangers in the wardrobe. Our room included a TV (freeview) and comfortable settee and views out onto the surrounding countryside and the hotel's large carpark, which we found secure. I'm a light sleeper but enjoyed a sound sleep every night of our stay and was not at all distrubed by the Christening Party held during our first night's stay. We were adjacent to some creaky stairs but are used to and enjoy old buildings and did not find it a problem.

We were amazed at and heartily enjoyed the substantial breakfast offered each morning and range of items to choose from. (Cerals, fresh strawberries, blueberries, fruit, yoghurt, croissants, fruit juice, cooked breakfast of numerous varieties, toast and jam/marmelade.) Our hosts were very accommodating and everyone got what they asked for. Nothing was too much trouble. We ate in a lovely dining room, with starched, spotless white table linen and guests had their own tables but could easily converse with other guests or remain private. Our helpful host put everyone at ease and had time to offer advice on where to go, what to see and how to get there etc

Guests had use of a private bar/lounge where they could relax and again either socialize or remain private. We found the room very relaxing and comfortable. Evening meals were available and we found the food to be well cooked and excellent. Access was unlimited. During our stay guests were a cosmopolitan mix of nationalities and ages and there was a genial, relaxed atmosphere. I was most impressed with the professionalism of our host when an inquisitive guest enquired about the identity of the arrivals by helicopter (yes, the car park can accommodate a helicopter) and he would not be drawn and easily parried the query with good humour replying "just a guest of the hotel".

We think the family run Lavender House Hotel is excellent value for money and my husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our short break with them. They have an excellent web site with virtual tours but it does not portray the genuine warmth and dedication of the hosts and their staff to ensure that their guests enjoy their stay.

We take this opportunity to thank them once again for making our stay so enjoyable and we hope to return. We shall certainly recommend The Lavender House Hotel to our friends.

i stayed with my son in a twin room en route to camborne to collect a motocross bike. the owners were very chatty and generally interested in what we had to say.
the bar area was clean, loved the sofa's and tv in the bar area.
we was only there for about 10 hrs, somewhere to get our heads down before the long return drive. would love to visit again.

Spent 2 nights here and we were delighted with the place. We had a lovely room, fantastic views, comfy bed and everything that we might need (loved the biscuits on the tea tray). Excellent breakfasts with lots of choice. Very friendly & helpful staff. We would definitely return there when revisiting that part of the country.

You should really think twice before considering booking a room at this hotel. In its heyday it was probably an elegant building set in glorious Devon countryside. However, in my opinion, it is now worn out and shabby. Of the hundreds of hotels I have stayed in around the world over the past 40 years this was the worst by a country mile. It does not come up to the standards expected in 2010.

Their main business is Saturday weddings.

From the moment you go through the front door, everything is untidy, scruffy and down-market. The place badly needs renovation and redecoration. My bedroom was dingy and the décor tired. The hotchpotch of cheap bedroom furniture looked as if it had been found in the unsold lots of the local auction house. The heating was haphazard with one radiator in the bathroom that was hot some of the time, an electric heater and an electric air conditioning/heater unit. It was difficult to control the temperature of water produced by the electric power shower. The bathroom was fitted with a device that automatically squirted the most horrible air freshener into the room about every 20min. I was unable to turn it off. It woke me numerous times through the night as it sounded like someone sneezing in the room. The overall standard of the room was poor and well below the specification and level of comfort of my own house. Think student flat rather than hotel.

The restaurant and gardens were closed.

I do not recognise the hotel described by the previous reviewer. Either we have widely differing standards or the quality of the bedrooms differs enormously. If it is the latter, as the only guest staying in the hotel that night, with, presumably the option of allocating me any room, the management deserve criticism by allocating me Room 3.

So did the hotel have any redeeming features? The breakfast was good and hearty. The bed was comfortable and made up with a feather filled duvet and pillows. The owner and staff were friendly. The views from the hotel over the foothills of Dartmoor were spectacular. Was it at least cheap? No. At £70 for single occupancy B&B, I thought it was overpriced for the standard offered. There are plenty of B&Bs in the area for between £45 and £60 per night. Although it purports to be a hotel rather than a B&B, there were no additional facilities to justify the price.

My visit was memorable for all the wrong reasons and nothing on earth would persuade me to return. If you are still thinking about booking a room, I suggest you think again.

We stayed at Lavender House for a residentual course, i was expecting basic rooms as i thought i was coming to a conference centre, I WAS WRONG. the rooms are superior, and the layout of the hotel is fantastic. The food that was coming out of that kitchen was truly outstanding and i think you can call it Fine Dining!!!

The rooms were peaceful, relaxing, affordable, and spacious and really really made me feel like a star. The staff done anything i needed a battery for my remote, i asked at the bar they had ran out.But the Young Man went all the way to Tesco some 9 miles away to fetch me a battery. THATS WHAT I CALL DEDICATION
