We went for a meal with my family and found the atmosphere really cosy. Your never sure what the food will be like .....it was the freshest food I have tasted for a long time. The salad looked like they had just fetched it from the garden. Our steaks were cooked exactly as we had ordered. The staff were all very attentive and friendly, even though we dined at a busy time. The sweets are a must, good selection and all very fresh. Cheese and biscuits were top notch.

The Dolphin Hotel is a typical coaching inn set in the pretty village of Bovey Tracey.
We had a room at the front, no. 8, which was clean and comfortable. However, as the weather was hot during our stay and the room got a lot of sun, we did find it hard to sleep at night with the heat. There were no fans provided or air conditioning. There was a kettle and drinks tray provided and the plugs were right next to a glass fronted wardrobe so I could see what I was doing whilst drying my hair. :) one little minus point - the plug for the sink in the bathroom didn't keep the water in whilst my husband shaved and if we stayed longer I am sure that would be rectified as all the hotel staff were very friendly and willing to help.
We had a meal for 10 with friends in the restaurant one evening and all the food was delicious. Lots of choices too. Once again the staff were very good.
There is a railway museum just a short stroll away which is worth a visit. The park just along from the hotel had a fair and car boot and other stalls on that weekend and it's carnival was due to be held there the following weekend (2 Aug). There are some nice little shops to look at too in the village. We would stay again but perhaps ask for a room facing the side, not the front of the building. A short drive away is Haytor and Widdecombe which are lovely to visit and ramble around amongst the Exmoor ponies.

Room Tip: Rooms at front get a little hot in summer. Perhaps ask if fans are available. You can hear people...

'Average' is probably too harsh. The Dolphin is a good basic hotel. We had a comfortable room and a good breakfast. The room had tv, tea and coffee and a few biscuits. It was clean and, other than the tractor rally that seemed to be taking place on the road outside at the time we stayed it was quiet. The location is perfect for exploring South Devon.
My only gripe was the shower which seemed like something off the Krypton Factor in order to get it to work. It did work eventually and it was ok.

Room Tip: We had a room overlooking the road with large windows. It was great for watching the world go by, bu...

Went last night after a recommendation. Quite busy for early evening. Very attentive staff. The food delicious, garlic mushrooms with Stilton as a starter very nice and plenty of it. Lasagne very tasty, the side salad very different with grapes and melon, one of the nicest I have had out for ages. Would defiantly recommend it to friends.
. Next time I think it will me a main and dessert as unable to finish lasagne.
Lastly very good value for money. Would defiantly recommend it to friens.

We have stayed at The Dolphin several times a year for the last four years and have been delighted with the experience. The management and staff are always friendly, attentive and helpful and go out of their way to respond to any requests. The staff have all been around for some time so the atmosphere is pleasant and we sometimes see familiar faces among the guests so we are not the only regulars.

The food is excellent and the menu ranges from bar meals to special occasion choices. The 'specials' board is regularly updated and offers varied and imaginative dishes. It appears to us that The Dolphin is the 'go to' place for local celebrations so the bar and restaurant have a good atmosphere. There is also a large function room available which caters for weddings, formal dinners and meetings.

The accommodation is good and roomy and well separated from the bar and function room so noise is not a problem.. We have stayed in several of the rooms and have always been very comfortable.
