I spent a restful weeeknd at the Edgemoor Hotel with former work colleagues. The weather was awful but somehow it didn't matter. The room was comfortable. The lounge area attractive and relaxed. The open fires a definite bonus. The food was good and varied. The breakfasts particularly worthy of mention. The setting was very pleasant - in better weather we would have pottered about happily in the grounds or on nearby Dartmoor. The owners are new and keen to please with ambitious plans for the future. I want to go again.

Ignore the reviews from before the new owners. We stayed here for 2 nights, we were meet with the friendliest of welcomes and all the way through the weekend nothing was too much trouble. The staff are all very friendly and enjoy telling you about the history of the hotel and the surrounding areas.

We had our meals in the hotel, Friday lunch was served outside and this was beautiful. We also ate in the restaurant and in the bistro and both of the rooms are lovely, especially in the evening with the lighting. The menu is full of mouthwatering dishes and the breakfasts are delicious. The nicest touch is to have drinks and canopy's in the lounge whilst waiting for your meal to be prepared.
The room we stayed in was spacious and had a terrace, which I believe you can stay in if you have a dog. The bathroom was large and had a corner bath which had a shower over.

I will be visiting this hotel again in the future and cannot wait to see all the changes the new owners are going to be carrying out in the New Year.

This really is a fabulous place. Ignore the earlier reviews. The new management are welcoming and accommodating. The food is fabulous. The rooms are superb.
We called in on the off chance of a room, and were patiently dealt with - all our daft requests met with polite helpfulness. We were shown 3 rooms of different character to choose from.
The slogan of the hotel is 'Elegance without Pretension', and the new owners do everything to live up to this. The magnificent lounge could have felt intimidating for pre- or post-prandials, but the sofas and log fire are genuinely a comfortable environment.
The menu is particularly varied for vegetarians, with 6 choices of starter and 6 of main, and the same number of options is available to omnivores. The food is as good as the menu is varied, prepared fresh by a French-trained chef.
The new owners are keen to hear how improvements can be made, and genuinely care about what you say.

This review is genuine. My wife and I live in London and have no connection with the owners. It is, quite simply, the best hotel that we have ever stayed in in the UK (and that is out of 200 or so).

We stayed at the Edgemoor on saturday night for dinner, bed and breakfast.

We would agree with previous reviewers that the new owners are extremely friendly and motivated to make positive changes.
The hotel is in an ideal position for exploring the moors and surrounding area and it was indeed an ideal base for our weekend.

Prior to our evening meal we were hoping to sample some local ales/
ciders and to have some time to relax in the bar, however we were pounced on and shown into the lounge where we were advised to peruse the very grubby menu and to await canapes.

The canapes compared to the rest of the food were disappointing and really not worth the effort. We were not offered any drinks, despite asking for the wine menu, and were advised by the young lady waitress that they do not stock, ales or cider!!

The lounge was a little reminiscent of waiting outside the headmistresses room, very dated, uncomfortable and lacking in atmosphere.

The menu was a bizarre concoction, and I must admit I was not overly excited by the options on offer. However the food was of a very high standard and I know they have tried to source as much locally as they can.

The only thing which we could criticise about the meal was the waiting staff, our main meal arrived (beautifully cooked pork), however we waited over 5 minutes for our vegetables despite asking the waitress politely, she seemed more interested in scolding the barman for not knowing which wine we ordered. consequently our meat was cold and our veg was soggy!

Good quality breakfast, again compliments to the chef

Our room was in a seperate annexe (merrivale room), very tranquil setting, however we could hear our neighbours frequent trips to the lavatory, and the bed although large was uncomfortable. The rooms were clean and functionable for one nights stay. However for £195 (including dinner) in comparison to other hotels we have stayed in, we felt it was overpriced for the standard of accomodation and facilities available.

Having raised the issues with the new owners Im sure these are will be addressed over time.

As per previous review - August 08 - I think you can ignore some historical comments here as a new couple and family have taken over, with some great ideas and plans for the hotel.

Food and service was first rate, location excellent and more importantly the staff could not do enough for us whether it be assisting with planning our days out locally or flexibility with meals etc.

We will certainly re-visit in the near future and would recommend a stay to anyone.
