Owner description: The South Devon Railway is one of the West Country’s best loved tourist attractions and is the longest established steam railway in the region. The former GWR branch line runs along the stunning valley of the Dart between Buckfastleigh and Totnes on a 14 mile round trip. The steam trains offer a wonderful all day, all weather attraction for families and people of all ages. The railway also has a fascinating museum, gardens, riverside walk, locomotive restoration workshops, a gift and model railway shop, refreshment rooms and more. Free car parking at Buckfastleigh, just off the A38, midway between Exeter and Plymouth; Totnes is a 500 yard walk from the main line station.

We visit this railway often and because of this saw the value of the family membership. There is so much to do. The attractions are not just isolated to the railway. There is the Butterfly Farm and Otter Sanctuary; at Totnes Little Hempston there is the Rare Breeds Farm.

All three stations are well kept, friendly and beautiful. The SDR put on really good attractions; more recently we dressed up for the wartime weekend which was so much fun. On another occasion we walked into Totnes from the ststion along the lovely river.

I cannot sing the praises of this (these) attraction(s) enough. We have family of 7 strong, so cost is always a consideration. The SDR have managed to provide excellent value for money and not just isolated its interests to the railway. That said the railway is a very well kept jewel with a fascinating and thoughful museum, delightfully kept gardens, miniture railway etc. The Gift Shop and Cafe are laid out well and offer realistic value for money.

It is a place that's well worth repeat visits, because there is a fair amount to take in. My next visit will be the Ale Festival at Staverton

We visited this when staying nearby and thoroughly enjoyed it. Our 4 yr old son particularly enjoyed it. Worth combining with the butterfly and otter sanctuary in Buckfastleigh and the rare breeds farm in Totnes, which are linked by this railway.

A lovely return trip to Totness in our first class carriage. Tootling through the beautiful countryside and waving to everyone on the river bank. Plenty of trains running so you can enjoy your day in Totness (or Staverton or Buckfastligh - depending on where you start and finish your journey from). Delicious devon cream tea also available at restaurant in station and an interesting museum and activities for children.

We visited for the SDR as a family and thoroughly enjoyed our day out, even though the typical Devon weather brought us Rain! The staff were very helpful and accommodating, we did two trips up and down the line as well as having lunch in the excellent cafe.
