Stayed a couple of weeks ago for the weekend - 'Wine Lovers Experience' - 2 night stay on Friday and Saturday. I have reviewed the excellent food elsewhere, however, felt that I should also review the 'front of house' side of things as well! The food comes with a 2 Michelin star tag and it is therefore not surprising that that the service that comes with it is of such a high standard - although it still comes as surprise as this is sometimes the thing that does let down places.

From the moment I walked through the door and was immediately greeted by several staff members to the time that we left on Sunday, we were treated like kings. Without exception, every single member of staff, irrespective of their job title, were courteous and attentive to your needs, no matter what you required. As soon as we arrived after a relatively long journey, we enjoyed tea on the terrace whilst someone emptied the car of our luggage and placed this in our room.

We stayed in 'Kitty', which whilst not being the biggest room (but bear in mind that this room is part of the main 'original' property) was absolutely perfectly proportioned - with a big, modern bathroom. The room overlooked the gardens and river at the front of the property and had its own balcony for the morning tea and paper reading in the sun!

Gidleigh has its own 18 hole championship putting green, which a few lost balls later, actually became very enjoyable, but above all the scenery is stunning, especially when the weather was as nice as it was for us. The bluebell wood was simply magnificent and the walk through the Estate grounds most relaxing indeed. On the Saturday we did the walk up onto the moor (Kestor Rock) and had magnificent views all day. A perfect way to enhance the appetite for the evening Dinner.

When taking into account the whole service, food and property, together with the private Cellar Tour and decanter of Port (not to mention the Madeira in your room for a quick drink in the afternoon!) this was a magnificent experience.

Thank you Damien and your excellent team!

Room Tip: Stay in a room overlooking the gardens and river on the front of the property - perfect when the sun...

Dining at Gidleigh Park is one of lifes real pleasures and the best value way of experiencing the food, the outstanding service and the wonderful ambience is to go for afternoon tea. For my birthday treat we both had the full afternoon tea in the lounge. Had the weather been a little more agreeable we could have sat outside and enjoyed the stunning scenery. Where else can you have the 2-star Michelin experience for £60?

A most enjoyable experience ,.the Head Gardener took us for a leisurely walk to the Bluebell Wood , explaining all about the gardens and grounds , ( Only 4 staff look after 107 acres )
This was followed by a most excellent lunch in one of the most exquisite hotels in the country .
The attention from the staff was second to none ,..

Room Tip: Choose a Valley view room

Dear Ronnie925

Andrew and the garden team will be so pleased you enjoyed your tour, they really do work hard and it shows, especially as you mentioned there are just four of them for 107 acres.
It is also very pleasing to hear you enjoyed lunch afterwards. Thank you for posting your review and hope to see you again soon. Kindest Regards

If you are looking for a truly stunning destination then look no further than Gidleigh Park, without doubt it is up there and rightly so with the best in not only the UK but the world, and it's here on my doorstep in beautiful Devon.
From the moment you enter through the gates you are blessed with the most glorious visions of elegance and beauty, sheer tranquillity in every direction you choose to gaze. The building itself is a mark of all the hard work and dedication that Andrew and Christina Brownsword have put into it over the years in restoring this magnificent country house hotel to what it is today.
When you enter through the front door of the hotel, you are greeted with warmth and professionalism that seems to be very seldom seen or appreciated in today's hectic world. We were then shown to the drawing room we were offered complimentary champagne and canapes that were a work of art all on their own, whilst contemplating over the lunch menu, still taking in the stunning scenery through the vast picture windows looking out across the acres of land.
The lunch itself was without doubt, one of, if not the best dinning experience we've ever been privileged to enjoy, It would be a severe injustice to single out any particular course, as each one was delivered, with a full in depth description by the excellent chef de rang, and each time it was not only a work of art, but bursting with fantastic natural flavours, that tantalised every taste bud, leaving you anticipating the next course.
It would also be very unfair to praise any individual for making our lunch so very special and a true memory that will live with us both forever, but please pass on our sincere thanks to Fabio our chef de rang, full of knowledge and a credit to Gidleigh Park and no doubt a loss to the Dorchester. A huge thank you to Michael Tweedie, the senior sous chef and the whole of the kitchen brigade for cooking for us the most remarkable and stunning lunch we have had in recent years, (and believe me we have had quite a few). There is something very satisfying to know that even when the great MC is not at the helm, that the 2 michelin stars of Gidleigh Park are in very capable hands. That in itself, is a true testament of all the training and hours and hours of hard work that MC has put into Gidleigh Park over the years, in making it a true culinary destination for anyone who appreciates fine dinning . Lastly a warm thank you to the young French sommelier lady, who gave us a fascinating and informative wine tour of the cellars, including the 13,000 bottles of wine held within the cellars.
Once again a huge thank you to everyone who made our whole afternoon at Gidleigh Park such an enjoyable day.

The location of the hotel and the timing of our visit allowed us to see and appreciate the wonderful
gardens and grounds. The bluebells were a delight and in full magnificence. The room was excellent
and all the staff charming, But there were a few issues worth mentioning. The dining chairs have no real lumbar support and ,I found, pretty uncomfortable [ unlike the bed which was excellent]. The waiters will keep topping up your wine / water glasses which can be rather intrusive We asked them to refrain from this. Some of the staff have such thick accents that we really could not understand them - better to have this information written out - it would save time, leave us in no doubt what we are being served, and , maybe, make a nice souvenir! You can't keep asking people to repeat themselves! As for the food - we were incredibly impressed with the obvious skill and dedication shown in the kitchen, But some of the courses simply lacked flavour or, for us at least, had the wrong balance. The turbot and shellfish for example should have been a taste sensation. It wasn't.
And the rhubarb dessert was far too acidic to enjoy. All the other courses were good, but the tastiest
dishes were the little "extras", although I'm not sure what some of them were for reasons stated.
The next day's meal was better, but in terms of overall satisfaction, I preferred the breakfasts which
are near to perfect.

Room Tip: By the time you reach here you may well want a cup of tea. They will provide this - at a cost OR yo...
