From the first moment when Damien greeted us on arrival, we felt at home. Our Anniversary escape started with a delightful surprise of an upgrade to a beautiful suite overlooking the stunning gardens. The cuisine, deserved it's Michelin stars and the service was not only professional but friendly. Special thanks from my wife ( who is a vegetarian ) for a separate, delicious tasting menu. The hotel and grounds are so relaxing and beautiful that you are not inclined to leave until you have to!!. There is just one word to sum up our experience at Gidleigh, and that is ......PERFECT.

Room Tip: Stay in one of the garden facing rooms if possible.

This is one of the best hotels in England. Now it’s not that flash or big or imposing. It’s instead like joining friends for a house party. I stay at lots of places and this is the one that I think I am really looking forward to it. And for once I am personally settling the bill!
Sometimes things just exceed your expectations and this is just such a place due to the quite incredible levels of service and the most brilliant kitchen.
This is the only place that I have ever quite felt so much at home and for that reason it’s my favourite hotel.
Wonderful!

Room Tip: If affordable a front facing room if possible!

The restaurant staff, the hotel staff, the cuisine, the rooms, the 'pantry', the gluten free selection. I couldn't have asked for anything more, or wished for anything greater. I truly felt like royalty and would love to visit again.
Upon my departure it was raining, but inside my heart was glowing.
Gidleigh this has been a memorable experience. One to forever remember.
I am buzzing, and cannot wait to visit again.
Thank You xx

....okay, at a price but we feel you get what you pay for. You really have to experience the food/service/accommodation and location to appreciate why Michael Caines/Gidleigh are on the cusp of 2/3 Michelin stars.
Whenever we feel like indulging this has become a natural choice, often edging ahead of such as Waterside and other favourites!
We appreciate what some people say about the challenging/intimidating narrow lane that leads to the hotel but we tend to cautiously accept it as we have found no real benefit in using Bentley or Mini as any passing of oncoming vehicles is impossible within the normal road width and a drive entrance or similar has to be used! So we minimise our car excursions from the hotel during a stay and either walk into the surrounding countryside or along the said road - under half an hour to delightful Chagford village (and its pubs).
Look forward to the next time we can find an excuse to return!

We are so pleased to hear you enjoyed your time with us and I know Michael will be very pleased to hear your thoughts on his food. We always think of our lane as a adventure and you know the truly quiet and relaxing places are always a little of the beaten track. Please do come and see us again some time soon. Kindest Regards

What a delight! The Best Meet and Greet by Sally and more besides! Felt relaxed and chilled from the start. Beautiful idyllic setting with tranquility, stunning gardens and feeling of being looked after! With the Restaurant being Michael Caines signature restaurant the expectation of delight is fulfilled to the max and the Wine menu if you want to read through it will not disappoint but why not really let go and let the Sommelier team guide you and you will be happy! Breakfast offers a number of choices but to be honest we did not want to risk diminishing appetite for the next meal in the restaurant at dinner!

My only suggestion for Team might be to highlight the last couple of miles of road taking you from Chagford up to the hotel. I say this not to put you off in any way as you would miss out on an experience that is special but the road is so narrow that our large 4wd vehicle barely made it down the long winding narrow single track road with inclines and sharp turns and meeting a small truck coming straight at you driven by a local used to the road, reversing to allow passing is incredibly challenging. If we had known in advance being fortunate to have a choice of a second much smaller vehicle we might have goole earthed the road and chosen more wisely. Of course part of the charm of this hotel is that it is isolated and there is everything there that you would want but we were disinclined to explore beautiful local area as I was petrified of using the road other than when we had to depart. This is in no way a criticism but I would have appreciated some advice on the website or on the directions we received if the hotel could take this on board!

We stayed in the Pavilion (with our two sons aged 9 & 11) from Friday until Sunday. This accomodation was the perfect option for us as it gave us plenty of space, privacy and a stunning setting. The croquet lawns are directly in front with the immaculate putting green adjacent. We arrived at around 5pm - along the very narrow lane, which we loved - and were warmly greeted immediately by the front of house staff. Before we left the car we were asked to follow the hotels Landrover to the pavilion where we were shown around as our car was unpacked.
We ate out on the Friday evening in Chagford which was arranged by the Gidleigh team (along with a taxi each way being charged to the room so we didn't have to worry about carrying cash).
We spent a lovely day on the Saturday playing tennis, croquet, putting and drinking the Madeira wine!
Dinner in the evening was quite simply perfect. The team discussed likes/dislikes with the boys which resulted in a personalised Tasting Menu for them. No stuffy "our way or no-way" attitude here (something we've experienced at other Michelin starred restaurants). The adults Tasting Menu with wine flight was great, so was the Duck on the a la carte menu.
Excellently paced delivery of the courses and attentive but not over bearing service really makes the experience complete. It really was a fantastic weekend.
Damien and the whole team, from housekeeping through kitchen staff to groundsmen (to name a few - Sophie / Edouard / Adam) should be proud of the fact that they create magical and lasting memories for people.

Everything you expect it to be. The service is excellent, but friendly not stuffy. We were greeted and taken to the terrace for champagne as soon as we arrived. The hotel was full and they were also dealing with a lunch service and afternoon tea, but somehow they make the place seem secluded you never feel like you are in a packed hotel.
We opted for the special wine lover’s weekend, and I can recommend this to anyone who likes their wine! You are served good quality wines throughout and the measures are excellent …..No skimping there. The food was excellent, I can’t say more than that! Nothing to dislike at all, even some things I am not keen on (like scallops) I loved as they were prepared so well. Nothing was too much trouble.
The rooms are well maintained and decorated and you know you are staying in a good hotel. Our room was large and airy and very well decorated, even though we opted for the rooms overlooking the back of the hotel it was still lovely. The rooms overlooking the valley must have the best view ever, but you will pay for it 
Breakfast is excellent, in fact my only complaint is that if I had eaten any more I would have exploded! Starve yourself for about 3 days before you arrive. Although there are some very good walks to exercise some of the weight off.
Great for a special occasion, would go back in a heartbeat. Even with the dodgy drive up that lane!

Room Tip: They are all good......but a room over looking the valley is extra special
