“Great getaway with a great food experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 August 2014

Had a great 1 night stay in truly beautiful hotel. It was a shame about the weather as we did not get chance to walk the grounds, but that's the UK.

Food was awesome of course with truly exceptional service and wine flight!

Room Tip: Try and get a front view, it's beautiful

A very pleasant lunch today. Service was impeccable, attentive, unobtrusive and not snooty. Amuse bouche were uninspiring, but the rest of the food was very good. Highlight for us was coffee with petit fours which included personalised messages from staff in chocolate, on the sunny terrace overlooking the gardens. An excellent finish to a ruby wedding anniversary and friends birthday. Lovely touch. Recommended.

We (two couples) made a stopover at this magnificent place in July 2014. We were shown the house by the manager and sat on the terrace for a drink. The place is pure magic! We noticed that service trainees need to be more attentive - nevertheless we very much liked it there. Relaxed atmosphere but still posh. The grounds are magnificent.

We chose Gidleigh Park for a special birthday and anniversary celebration and decided to go for a celebration lunch with an overnight stay.
This turned out to be a great option as we cannot eat two Michelin star meals in one day and at this time of year with long days, you can make good use of the hotel grounds and facilities in the afternoon and evening.
So we turned up at 12:30 and had the celebration menu which was delicious. We had one small problem with the meal as my duck turned out to be somewhat stringy, but this was swiftly sorted and a replacement course provided, which was perfect.
The meal was four courses but with two additional complementaries our six course feast was devoured at just the right pace.
Complemented by a first class NZ sauvignon the meal was superb.
We retired to our room after lunch and made use of the Larder facility for a cup of tea (and a quick nap for my wife).
Our room was the less expensive woodland view category and was slightly disappointing in that it was a loft room with no real view whatsoever. If we had been staying for more than one night then I would have changed the room, but it didnt really matter for one night.
The grounds provide plenty of potential for short or long walks and the 18 hole putting course is quite entertaining for an hour. Our walks around the estate were very pleasant with the house as a regular backdrop and the river meandering and gushing over rocks around the front of the property.
Our room (Hound) was very well appointed with a comfortable six foot bed and well appointed bathroom. The hotel had thoughtfully provided a Dyson oscillating fan which was very welcome as it was a very hot evening and this was needed to keep the room cool as there is no aircon.
Breakfast the next morning was equally pleasant with continental and full english options. We would have liked to have met chef Michael Caines, but disappointingly he was on vacation this week
If I have one comment it is that the room doors can be quite noisy if no closed carefully and as usual there were inconsiderate guests who seem to delight in slamming doors at midnight. So so quiet closers on room doors would be something I would put on the "to do" list.
Given this is a very expensive hotel it is not overly pretentious and smart casual dress was the order f the day. The staff I would have to say went to great lengths to be friendly, helpful and personal. This did make our stay quite special.
There was no mention in the advertising material or website that there is a tennis court, and there is no swimming pool or spa facility.
So overall I would rate it 9/10. It should be on your bucket list!

Room Tip: If you can afford go for a suite or balcony room, but you are talking £600+ a night.

Stayed here for two nights for our anniversary - the other reviews are correct, it is a fantastic place. We had he loft suite which was nice, although would have been better with some more/bigger windows as it does feel a little on the dark side. Also bear in mind there is no air conditioning, although not sure if that is just this room or all rooms. The up side is though that as a family room, it's fantastic because there is a separate room for the little ones. The room was spacious though, with two loos, a lovely, lovely bath and walk in shower room.

The road up to the hotel is a little windy, but we found it to be fine, after all, look where the hotel is! The views are amazing, as are the grounds. There are various walks you can do directly from the hotel, from a short stroll around the grounds to a walk up onto the moor.

The restaurant is fantastic, as you'd expect for a 2* Michelin. The only other 2* restaurant I have eaten in is Whatley Manor, which s also fantastic (as is the hotel by the way) and I would recommend a stay there too as I think it is equally as good as Gidleigh Park.

A great place, highly recommended.

It is the small things in hotel suites that count! We had the Dartmeet suite which is newly renovated and has been designed to be aesthetically and practically pleasing. It is a first floor spa suite with a fantastic terrace running the length of the suite, overlooking the grounds.
On this terrace are sun loungers, and a table and chairs, fantastic for lazily admiring the view.
Firstly it has a massive bathroom, with the largest double sized bath I have ever encountered, easily comfortable for two to soak in deep water, with taps on the side and no one getting cramped .It also has an excellent double rainforest and separate water spray shower cubicle, so two people can shower side by side without one person having to stand and shiver whilst the other is under the water! there was a fabulous steam room for two people and a sauna cabin, the sauna cabin is a bit of a squeeze, but adequate.A lovely double sized sink in vanity stand with ordinary mirrors and at each end magnifying mirrors , very useful. There are plenty of mirrors all around and apart from the vanity area around the double basin there are heaps of dressing table spaces and plug sockets for the girlie's to blow dry their hair and do their make up in comfort. An absolute necessity in a well designed suite.
So the bathroom is fab, with heaps and heaps of fluffy white towels, white dressing gowns, slippers and even a television screen, a relaxing chair and loads of lovely L'occitane products.
The bedroom / lounge area is really classy with gorgeous cream and ivory silk drapes, pale wood panelling and a huge lounging sofa, gas fire and exceptionally comfortable bed with fluffy comfortable pillows. From first arriving the suite felt very comfortable.Plenty of wardrobe hanging space, and loads of drawers and table space.
An excellent sound system with a selection of dreamy CD, to play, and again a television.
Thoughtful touches like small leather dishes beside the bed to put your jewellery or loose change in,a bowl of jelly beans to scoff at will! oops.A gorgeous fruit bowl with lush ripe fruit in. Gidleigh spring water in a covered jug, and just around the corner from the suite, a Pantry!!! where you can make your own tea and coffee night and day, help your self to ludicrously scrumptious home-made biscuits , and more fruit.
We were so impressed with the feeling of calm and graciousness that we have already booked the suite for two nights for next year. This style of luxury does not come cheap, but it is simply divine and as suites go and we have tried many suites worldwide it is simply stunning, aided by some fabulous views and the sound of a stream gushing through the grounds.

Room Tip: Choose the best room you can afford, and preferably one with views facing out the front. There are no...

Lovely countryside retreat to celebrate my birthday - thank you to my wife Sharon for suggesting it.
Yes, the lane is narrow but take your time and in fact it is only 12 minutes from the main road - with nothing coming the other way.
All staff were brilliant, made us feel at home and nothing was an issue.
Our Master room with balcony was perfect with great views over the parkland from the first floor.
Lovely walks with views in the Park.
Food was exceptional, every course of the Al la Carte. Thinking back each course was probably the best making the whole dining experience special .
The dining rooms are on the small side and we were at the back so no views over dinner - anyway we could concentrate on the food and wine.
Next morning we had a lovely breakfast and a walk. Back for coffee on the terrace and didn't want to leave today. So had a light lunch and then made our way slowly down the lane and then made our way home. Should have stayed another night! - brilliant, must do it again and book the same room - Drogo after the Castle.

Room Tip: The staff will talk you through what suits you best but we found our choose was perfect for us - so...
