“Outstanding”
Reviewed 3 December 2013

I took my wife for a surprise 70th Birthday lunch having heard so much about Gidleigh Park since moving to Devon and having lived in the Lakes as a hotelier and dined on most of the best hotels/restaurants in the Lakes and around the world we were looking forward to an outstanding meal. We were not disappointed.

On arrival up the long drive I dropped my off at the front door to save the walk from the car park; she was greeted within seconds of entering and shown into the lounge with lovely views of the grounds.

We chose the three course lunch menu having had all the options explained in great detail by one of the many charming staff we met during our visit. The lunch was outstanding with well balanced flavours and tastes throughout the meal as you would have expected from a Hotel of this standard.

All the staff were first class and well trained and so pleasant at all times. We both look forward to returning again in the near future.

We can not recommend this Hotel to highly it is must on your to do list.

Thank you to the chef and team as well to all the other staff.

“Loved it”
Reviewed 3 December 2013

We went to Gidleigh Park for lunch with a couple of friends who had been there before - their enthusiastic review wasn't a patch on the real thing. My husband doesn't eat rice or pasta, so his menu was subtly changed - thank you so much.

The food was stunning - picture perfect, the staff as helpful as you wanted them to be, and the wines fab. It was just a shame it was pouring with rain all day, so we didn't get into the gardens.

Just one question... the reed diffusers in the ladies loos are really lovely, and not sickly as you often get with this sort of thing. Can anyone from Gidleigh tell me the make and variety?

We loved it... will go again.

Dear Woofh

We are very pleased to hear you enjoyed your first Gidleigh Park experience.

The kind comments regarding our staff and the food are greatly appreciated, as you can imagine we are very proud of all the team here at Gidleigh Park, their dedication and passion shows in all that we do.

With regards to the Diffuser it is from Branche d' Olive and the scent is called Garrigue it is very popular with our guests and has become something of a signature scent for us.

Thank you for taking the time to post the review on your visit.

We do hope to welcome you back to Gidleigh some day when hopefully you may have the opportunity to explore our beautiful gardens.

Kindest Regards

“Lovely lunch”
Reviewed 23 November 2013 via mobile

For our first wedding anniversary we headed down to Dartmoor for a long weekend.

Unbeknownst to Mrs W, I'd booked us lunch at the manor.

After a lengthy drive to the manor we found ourselves in beautiful surroundings, well manicured gardens a real change to the wild beauty of the moor itself.

We were shown to the parlour for pre-lunch drinks and a lovely amuse-bouche of foie gras and delightfully spiced pumpkin soup before being shown to our table.

Lunch was superb, with the right blend of taste and seasonal produce. The wine was well chosen by the sommelier, the staff attentive without being overbearing.

Michael Caines has plenty to be proud of here, and while we had no reason to bemoan our choice of food, the only thing we noticed that could in any way have been improved on was the atmosphere. It was a little quiet, and without wishing to detract from a gorgeous day some music in the parlour would have made a huge difference.

All in all however I can't but recommend Gidleigh Manor, certainly for a special occasion. Great food, beautiful surroundings and lovely people.

Dear James W

It is very pleasing to hear you enjoyed your Anniversary lunch at Gidleigh Park.

We are very lucky to be able to feature so much local seasonal produce on our menu and Michael Caines has been foremost in promoting the South West as a supplier and producer of fine ingredients for a long time, you may have noticed that some of the vegetables and herbs are even grown in our own kitchen garden.

It is also nice to hear you found our staff and the service you received to a high standard and that our Sommelier was able to assist with your wine choice.

Having music in our dinning rooms is something we have decided not to do as there are three smaller rooms and sometimes music can detract from a natural atmosphere, however we do take your observations on board as feedback from our guests is very valuable and is paramount to insuring we offer a memorable experience to all who visit us.

May I thank you for taking the time to complete this review and I hope we will be able to welcome you back to Gidleigh Park for that next special occasion.

Kindest Regards

“Lunch”
Reviewed 22 November 2013

Good food particularly for slimmers, cosmpolitan staff everywhere, very pleasant lounge with
wonderful views, rather small dining room with limited views, somber atmosphere. This experience
does not compare to The Horn of Plenty at Gunnislake. Just as good food, better value, much more relaxed feel and an even better view. Try it, you will be pleasantly surprised.

Dear iamatm

Thank you for taking the time to write a review on Gidleigh Park

We are very lucky to have far reaching views from our Lounge and our three separate dinning rooms, maybe a visit in the summer would be a good idea where you could enjoy arrival drinks or after lunch coffees on our terrace to really take in the views.

“Food Outstanding Pretentious Surroundings”
Reviewed 20 November 2013

The food is absolutely outstanding as you would expect from any Michelin star restaurant and we truly thank you for that. The portion sizes are adequate but in our opinion could have been a little more generous as it was such a delicious experience. The tasting menu is a must. The serving staff are simply delightful. Gidleigh ticks all of the customer satisfaction boxes apart from one. This is one of those stereotypically pretentious over the top 'classically drab period clad' interiors where one might expect her very Majesty to meander through and pose against the mantel. The dining rooms have more pomp than Sandringham Palace with far less shabby paint chips. From the shoulder up you are steeped in heavy riches with no softness in the decor below eye level when seated to make you feel at ease and in cosy comfort whilst you enjoy the magical delights from the kitchen. The sheer organic grandeur beauty that is the exterior and gardens of this food haven was in stark contrast to the stuffy pretentious overly formal interior. It feels as dusty and cold as the House of Lords.

Dear silkyTC

Thank you for taking the time to write a review on your visit to Gidleigh Park

It is very pleasing to hear you enjoyed the Tasting Menu, Michael Caines has devised a very balanced menu which we feel represents the best of the South West and has been created over his 19 years of being at Gidleigh Park as Executive Chef

It is also superb to hear that you found our restaurant staff delightful, they work hard to try to insure all our guests have an enjoyable experience.

It is a shame you disliked our interior so strongly, Gidleigh Park was closed for a complete renovation 7 years ago and was refurbished to a very high standard while retaining its original features and reflecting the Arts and Craft movement. The owners have been very careful to enhance the feel of the property with their own furniture and artwork and it was always first in their mind to be sympathetic to the era in which the house was built.

Of course we all have different tastes and we very much respect your opinion.

Kindest Regards
