This is more a castle than a cottage, with every comfort and elegant furnishings. Very spacious. The views and the expansive gardens are incredibly beautiful. We were encouraged to explore and hike, as well as to soak up the sun from the kitchen patio, in privacy. Set on a narrow country lane with mature trees, a rocky river, and birdsong, it is also near a friendly and gentrified village with all the facilities and supplies needed.
Thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Down Cottage. Cannot overstate the beauty of the property and grounds. Do take time to take a stroll over the moss-covered rocks and down to the river. It is quite enchanting and you will feel as though you have found Middle-Earth. The cottage has charm and elegance and yet retains a coziness. A perfect balance of luxury and character with all modern amenities. Hosts were gracious yet unobtrusive. The village of Chagford is delightful and the location is ideal for exploring Dartmoor and beyond. The hardest decision of each day was whether to stay out and enjoy the breath-taking countryside or to return home to the comfort of the cottage. We shall certainly choose Down Cottage if we are fortunate enough to return to the area.
We were very pleased with our choice of Down Cottage. The furniture and furnishings are well above average for a holiday cottage and the accommodation was lovely and clean.
The cottage is a short drive from Chagford situated in a very quiet area. Plenty of walking onto the moor directly from the door.
The cottage has a very effective heating system and we were nice and warm throughout our stay. Unfortunately, we had to cut our holiday short as our dog was very ill and we needed to take her back to our own vet and that was the only disappointing part of our holiday.
Chagford is a lovely village with some good eating places so well worth a visit. We go there at least once a year as it's not too far from Cornwall where we live.
We spent nine nights at Down Cottage. It is absolutely one of the nicest places we have ever
rented. Beautifully decorated, well-equipped, beautiful views, just below the moor, close to Chagford village. The weather during our stay was cold and rainy and it was very nice to come back to cozy Down Cottage after venturing out.
The owners were very friendly and invited us to explore the grounds, which they have rescued from many years of neglect. With the North Teign River running below, the landscape is spectacular. We took several walks when the rain abated...
We ate all dinners in the cottage's lovely dining room, provisioning in Chagford, where there is a wonderful botcher (with the most flavorful chicken, locally-raised, we have ever had), a bakery, a dairy, and wonderful wine store. We had outstanding lunch at Gidleigh Park, splurging on the nine course tasting menu. Fabulous from start to finish and in all regards...
Despite the weather, we were able to do the Teign River Gorge walk near Castle Drogo and the Scorhill walk on Dartmoor. We look forward to adding other walks during our next stay at Down Cottage, which we highly recommend!

We have enjoyed another wonderful week at Down Cottage. After a lovely warm welcome we enjoyed a week in this beautifully positioned and appointed cottage. I cannot recommend it highly enough.
Down Cottage enjoys a superb location with fine views. It’s just a short drive to Chagford with its wide range of independent shops, eating places and pubs while in the other direction it’s an equally short drive to the open moorland of Dartmoor, This affords excellent walking and the chance to leave the stresses of everyday life behind. For a picnic we’d particularly recommend the banks of the River Teign, which can be reached by following the boundary wall down from Batworthy Corner. The cottage itself offers every home comfort - high quality, spacious accommodation and excellent facilities, including TV and DVD player in the lounge, a TV in each bedroom and a fully stocked kitchen with everything you need for self-catering, including a ceramic hob, microwave and dishwasher plus a washing machine in the adjacent garage. The living rooms and bedrooms are tastefully furnished giving a style and elegance that is easy to relax in. If you don’t fancy cooking a meal each day then Chagford has four pubs, which between them offer everything from standard ‘pub grub’ to high class dining (we were particularly impressed with the Chagford Arms), two restaurants (one of which is Indian) and some excellent cafes. In addition there is a delightful delicatessen to serve your every need for packed lunches. Guests at Down Cottage also have the run of the garden and the large expanse of land that extends down to the spectacular, boulder-strewn River Teign. This year was our first visit to Down Cottage and we’re so impressed that we’re booking again for next year

Our second year staying at Down Cottage and we all immediately relaxed on arrival. It's such a beautiful place to stay and the cottage is so homely. The owners make you feel very welcome. Definitely recommend.
