“Go and enjoy a beautiful devon public house”
Reviewed 31 August 2014

Just had a meal at the Cleave and could not recommend highly enough the food and hospitality. All the staff are very welcoming and the evening was a delight. And the bonus is to step outside onto a thatched village in the evening moonlight, crescent moon in the sky, which is not dissimilar to something seen from the eighteenth century

“Still a lovely venue.”
Reviewed 31 August 2014 via mobile

A family group went for Sunday lunch. As always a lovely meal. Good meats and vegetables, with puddings to die for. I am a regular customer - keep up the good work.

“I'll be back for Christmas!”
Reviewed 22 August 2014

The Cleave is indeed very picturesque – thatched roof, lime-washed walls, ancient stonework, large fireplace, beautiful beer garden, etc – and the food is exceptional, I recommend the ‘Pork Olives’ with a perfect garland of crackling, wish I’d also had the delicious looking, greedy, full rack of ribs and chicken wings – but really the lovely thing about this pub is the people that work there – all of them! Ben the landlord, witty and personable, captaining the ship brilliantly, Georgie who made me laugh so much I couldn't drink my superb Otter Ale, Gareth, one of the friendliest people I've ever met, and all the others whose names evaporated in a haze of very late night ale and whiskey. This is what is really important about a pub, the people that make us feel so welcome, often vaguely referred to as ‘atmosphere’, it’s really about being there and sharing great times with them. I’ll be back for the ribs, but really for the wonderful staff, greetings to you all from Richard and Galen

“An absolute corker”
Reviewed 20 August 2014

What a great country pub.
Fabulous pub-grub, really well-kept beer, friendly staff and a landlord who just manages to be on the amusing side of Basil Fawlty-ish dry humour.
We visited on a Sunday and the plates of roast dinners being conveyed to diners came out stacked high and went back cleared. The homemade Yorkshires were so big you needed a rope and crampons to tackle them.
It's also dog friendly and a great place to while away the time reading the supplied newspapers.
Don't let anyone tell you the great British pub is on its last legs - The Cleave thoroughly deserves its TA Certificate of Excellence.
