“Excellent stay!”
Reviewed 19 June 2014

Another wonderful few days at Bovey Castle! The place is a little heaven on Earth – the grounds are magnificent and varied and interesting – played some golf, caught some trout and walked my dog in some glorious settings.! It is unbelievably dog friendly – all staff are very welcoming and smiling. We didn’t eat in the main restaurant but the Bistro was superb – well priced and varied menu with an interesting wine list with plenty available by the glass.

The manager Frederico marshals his team well – he seems to be ever present and he leads by example – he smiles and interacts with guests and his team follow his lead. We loved it and look forward to returning .

We spent three nights at Bovey at the end of last month for my wife's birthday. We took our four children (6, 4, 4 and 1). from the moment we arrived we were looked after like royalty, and when they found out it was my wife's birthday the service went into overdrive. Glasses of bucks fizz at breakfast, complimentary afternoon tea for the whole family with champagne for us and mocktails for the children. nothing was too much trouble and all the staff were charming and smiling. The manager, Federico, is in a different league. He appeared to be omnipotent. Every time I had a request or a comment he was there. He was at breakfast in the morning, greeting and chatting, then constantly roaming the hotel making sure everything went smoothly (which it did) and then he was there again in the evening at dinner! Does he ever go home? the kids loved the Lego room service and all the craft things in the playroom but best of all we rented a golf buggy for a couple of hours and just zoomed round the grounds. The spa staff managed to shuffle around some rotas to accommodate my wife's massage on her birthday. This is a perfect antidote to the dilemma "why do I have to stop going to great hotels now I have my kids with me?". We had two interconnecting Castle Valley rooms, beautiful views, spacious and comfortable, and nicely furnished. Definitely worth paying the extra for the view. As my wife emerged from the bathroom one evening before dinner she remarked to me that the bathrobes were not up to the standard of the towels and linen (extremely high), I mentioned this to Federico as I bumped into him on the stairs and within four minutes they had delivered two lovely fine fluffy cotton robes to our room ! That's service. This was our second visit (last time we stayed in a lodge) and it just gets better each time. We will definitely be back. Thank you Fed and your team.

Room Tip: Definitely book a Valley view. As for an upgrade when you book or on arrival, it costs the hotel the...

We won a 'free' golf break and drove the hundreds of miles to get there. The meal voucher didn't cover the cost of a hugely overpriced meal in the main restaurant and don't ask about wine prices. The golf course is very strange and we wouldn't go back.

The room was so 'luxurious' that it was it was totally uncomfortable and the staff kept closing the windows even though we wanted fresh air.

The only part I would give some sort of praise to was the bistro / golf bar where at least they were friendly and not too expensive (not cheap mind).

Our 'free' weekend cost us well over £200 and we couldn't wait to get home.

Room Tip: Find a smaller cheaper hotel.

We went to Bovey Castle as part of my birthday celebrations. We arrived just after lunchtime to be greeted by staff who parked the car and transported our luggage to our room. We had a beer on the terrace overlooking the valley and golf course before having a swim in the beautiful pool which had floor to ceiling windows - what a view. The bedroom was spacious and very comfortable
We enjoyed our meal in the bistro and the service was excellent. The hotel has several guest rooms all with log fires which are amazing.
Breakfast was in the restaurant and was very good
We were treated to a falconry display on the terrace and overall the service was excellent.
The grounds have some beautiful walks. Bovey castle will lhave a special place in our hearts

Had a wonderful afternoon with friends and family and really enjoyed the afternoon tea. Staff were really attentive and gave brilliant advice as my 11 year old daughter was with us and they said we wouldn't need to order her a tea as there would be plenty for her to share. They were right. Lovely sandwiches, scones and pastries with plenty of tea. An amazing afternoon and really enjoyable experience.

We met family at Bovey Castle for a Sunday lunch on our daughter's birthday and thoroughly enjoyed the experience from having the car parked for us on arrival to wandering around the grounds after lunch. The staff were attentive, without being overbearing, the food lovely and the ambiance amazing! Our daughter was mad to feel special with a 'Happy Birthday' piped in chocolate sauce around her desert, and the fact that our grandson wanted to explore, was no problem. Thank you for a lovely day.

This was our first visit to the West Country, and we were delighted we were staying in such a grand hotel set on the eastern edge of Dartmoor National Park. We opted for a special break offer which provided afternoon tea on our day of arrival. We were not disappointed by the quality and quantity of the sandwiches, cakes and scones or the magnificent setting in a baronial style grand hall with a real fire in the huge fireplace. We had chosen to pay a little extra for a Castle Valley room with views to the grounds and golf course and to the moors beyond. We ate in the more relaxed setting of the bistro and also the grander main dining room - and it's great having a choice of eating places. Bistro has fantastic views and a fine terrace and the food is good value for money. A quality burger came with a firm textured ciabatta roll and not an overly soft hamburger bun. And it's little touches like that that made the bistro meal enjoyable. The main dining room (and also the breakfast service) was overseen by a most attentive and helpful maître d' called David. I am convinced he never stood still during breakfast service on any day he was on duty and was always welcoming and friendly. Breakfast was good with a selection of hot freshly cooked options as well as a cold breakfast buffet. I thought it would be a fine location for keen golfers with a quiet golf course in the grounds (well, it was quiet on June weekdays). And it has activities for children such as egg collecting at breakfast time with a daily falconry display for any guest. As with any large hotel we encountered the odd glitch but the friendly helpful service and the desire to put things right immediately meant we will definitely be back and would recommend a stay there.

Room Tip: Valley view rooms are worth paying the extra.
