The food was good but felt overpriced for a bar bench table and staff that insisted we enjoy and, with their backs to us, debated who would 'bother' to take our money when we had finished. No tip.
Not really the special birthday meal in the resturaunt I was excited about

This pub has a lovely atmosphere and is situated in an attractive village. However, we found the food very disappointing. We shouldn't have been surprised when we saw the number of items on the menu. Quite obviously everything was either pre-prepared or bought in and then microwaved. Why don't pubs like this go for a limited menu and prepare everything fresh. In such a nice pub one wouldn't mind waiting whilst the food is being cooked.

Try the New Inn at Sampford Courteney if you would like the chance to have a pretty good meal at a not too expensive cost!
This pub / restaurant is well worth trying if you can't get a table at the Red Lion at Exbourne. The food is just as good if not better, although it is slightly more expensive.
The ambiance in the old bar is inviting, more so than the two other dining rooms, and the garden can be an enjoyable area to eat on a warm summer's day.
Beers are good but tend to change too frequently for this hostelry to support a regular drinking clientelle.
Try it and if you choose well, you won't be too disappointed!

I live in Spreyton and I have visited the New Inn a number of times and the food and service has always been excellent and good value (I do not know what the reviewers 20th May & 16th May are complaining about?).
I last visited on 8th June Sunday evening with some friends who were visiting us and the Tom Cobley had a beer festival and was not serving food.
I had the Sunday roast which was excellent, one of the group had venison, one fish platter and a vegetarian who is normally hard to please and they all thoroughly enjoyed their meals and said they would like to return next time they are down Devon.
Please keep up the good work as you have improved the pub so much and you were packed for a Sunday evening which is always a good sign that you are a popular pub!

A very pretty looking pub on the corner of a cross roads in Sampford Courtenay. When you drive alongside it to get into the car park you soon realize that it is a lot bigger than you think. The overall pub was very welcoming with a fire in the hearth and local people sat around the bar. The main bar area is made up of tables for eating and they also have a separate restaurant as well. We had decided to sit in the main bar to enjoy the local atmosphere. The owner and staff were lovely and most accommodating. The food was excellent - way above what you would expect from 'a pub' - a lot of choice was available and exceptionally good size portions. The sweets were 'to die for' - if you have a sweet tooth, keep a little room - they are not to be missed. The whole experience was superb and I would highly recommend a visit - I went with my parents and they have already returned for a second wonderful meal.... If you live nearby, you should visit - if you are passing through - take a little time to enjoy good food in a local pub. You won't be disappointed ......
