Prince Hall Country House

Tucked away just south of the Two Bridges to Ashburton road, we experienced one of the nicest possible Devon cream teas with top quality ingredients and warm scones. Taken in the garden with glorious views over Dartmoor this hotel was just a delight. Nice friendly service made a return visit essential.

This is the second time we have stayed here, last time was in Toptor and this time upgraded to Yestor. This is the most friendly and welcoming hotel we have ever stayed in. I cannot believe the last review that thought portions in restuarant meagre. Having had a very satisfying breakfast - a most extensive breakfast menu - we skipped lunch but had a cream tea on returning to hotel - we should have share a scone as our appetite was spoilt for dinner. The food is amazing, the staff friendly and so welcoming. I cannot wait to return

Room Tip: Rooms facing moor have wonderful views, first floor probably have better water pressure for shower

Great room. Loved the lounge and bar with fireplaces - felt like you were a guest in a country home. Very, very dog friendly. Lovely staff. Fantastic Dartmoor location.
Restaurant was pleasant with an ambitious menu but execution, seasoning and flavour were lacking. Portion sizes were minuscule - hardly what was expected at a country hotel where people have been walking etc all day.
In general, what could be a very special place is spoiled by an underlying feeling of meanness.

Room Tip: Pay more for a moors view

We loved staying here with our dog and will be back. The food was out of this world and all the staff we met were very nice without being patronising. There are lovely walks starting right from the hotel so we never had to use our car once and it was great to come back to a 5 course dinner.

A belated review as visited on 9th may for the weekend. The two of us plus Kiki our working cocker on her first ever hotel break !
From the moment we stepped through the door we knew it was exactly what we thought it would be........the welcome (for all of us) from the 3 resident dogs , the location and wonderful views, bedroom and .......the superb food , which was what was promised and what we were looking forward to. My partner is vegetarian so she is sometimes left a little short on quality and innovation but not here , there were some great items on the main menu and there was a separate vegetarian menu. The food really was good , nouvelle cuisine ish but not over fussy, and it all really worked and great use of local and seasonal produce. Nice touches in the bedroom for Kiki too - her own mat for her food and water dishes and Boneo biscuits .
My only regret ? Not having a ploughmans lunch here ! Had a discussion with Fi about what makes a great ploughmans . We had a very disappointing one at the Ruggletone Inn at Widdecombe on the moor - lovely pub , beers, ciders etc but clearly its not known for their Ploughmans!
Anyway, back to Prince Hall.....it's. great base for the rest of Dartmoor but if for any reason you couldn't leave the Hotel, it really wouldn't matter as there are beautiful walks from Prince Hall as well and then of course there is the food including apparently excellent clotted cream teas , and I'm sure they are !
All the staff and owners were lovely , attentive, great service, happy but keeping it all very informal at the same time and always seemed to have time to share their local knowledge.
Thank you all at Prince Hall , we shall definitely be back!

I haven't stayed at this hotel but have lunched there and cannot recommend it highly enough, especially if you have a dog(s). Lovely people, good food and a comfortable, informal sitting room. The view's quite good too.

Slightly scruffy décor especially in the bedrooms. Our bathroom flooded too (the plumbing is not the best). However, this hotel has so much charm that you somehow forgive its shortfalls. People come for lunch or afternoon tea and just stay and stay. When we last arrived it was like walking into an overcrowded house party, but with everybody chatting to everyone else! The owners have three dogs and it is extremely dog-friendly. Our dog is always given a very warm welcome and loves it. The service is good without being intrusive, and there was an especially pleasant waiter and barman during our last stay. The food is always excellent and the location is, of course, beautiful. We have never revisited any hotel apart from Prince Hall, so that is a recommendation in itself.

Room Tip: Try to book a room with a moorland view.
