My boyfriend and I went to this pub for a quiet meal - we had been camping at a nearby campsite with friends and needed a quiet break away from the crowd for some quality time.

The food was absolutely beautiful. You could tell every part was hand-made and it was very reasonably priced.

The food came out quickly despite the menu pre-warning us that all is made from scratch and it may take a while to come out.

Enough parking for us to be able to find a spot. Drinks were excellent.

Beautiful view of the coast too - very pretty and made the meal even more enjoyable.

We recently attempted to visit The Mount Pleasant Inn as it always looked busy when we passed it. We walked in past 3 sections of bars and was given filthy looks by some of the diners (I can only assume that it was because we had a 3 year old with us). There was a Family Room that was at the other end but only found this out for standing at the bar for 5 mins wondering where to go. Upon sitting down, has a brief look at the menu but felt so uncomfortable got up and went to The Smugglers Inn instead as they were much nicer there.

We wanted a peaceful 2 night getaway and, having previously visited the inn for lunch and drinks, decided to choose the Mount Pleasant.
When we telephoned to make the booking, the balcony room (they only have one) was taken so requested the next best room and we were advised that they had a double available so we booked.
We arrived to a friendly welcome and opted to eat prior to checking in as they were about to finish the lunch session. Food was quite good and served promptly. At the moment, they have a promotional menu which is unbeatable for value and the quality is more than acceptable. To keep this part of the post short, we ate all meals at the inn and have no complaints. Service a bit sloppy at busy times but one can tell that a certain standard is maintained with regard to the food and praise to management/kitchen for offering a tasty, affordable menu - they do, of course, charge slightly higher beer prices but us consumers can't have everything and the establishment has to survive.
The problem with our stay was the room and the approach to it. Very small bedroom with mismatched decor that did nothing to appeal. Don't know who the interior designer is but they need a new one. To blend fresh looking modern rooms with the traditional charm of an aged building is not difficult but they fail miserably. Situated overlooking the road, it was noisy but did quieten down for a few hours during the night. HOWEVER, it is positioned directly above the speakers in one section of the bar so there is a constant music noise from lunchtime until late close. Had we been advised of this prior to booking we would have been able to make an informed decision as to whether this was the right place for us. The approach is absolutely ghastly and passes the kitchen in order to access stairs to the first floor (where the rooms are). it is grubby, smelly and dilapidated, with boxes of paper on window sills, door to tumble drier room left permanently wide open and going downstairs in the morning we were welcomed by envelopes and various other items placed on several stairs, it really is not good enough. There is also a staff office directly opposite to room 3 which doesn't help the noise factor. Their website gives the impression of a number of rooms; there are 3 in total. One balcony, one double and one twin, do not believe the website hype as it is totally misleading. The following is from their website:

Our range of bedrooms, are well-appointed, and many have sea-views. The history and character of the building means that all our rooms are individual, some have little quirks, like their own balcony or rounded corners.

It feels very much like 3 junk rooms have been cleared and very cheaply decorated to create a bit more revenue which is fine - as long as you tell the paying guest the truth. They charge £35.00 pp pn at this time of year but it is not worth £20.00 pp pn at any time of the year.

We have never stayed anywhere so poor before and left after the first night which ruined our mini break.

What a disappointment this was. We took my in laws as a celebratory meal as they have been before when they visited Dawlish and enjoyed it.

This time was very different. One of the starters came out when everyone else had finished theirs, we mentioned this twice whilst we were waiting and were told the toast was cooking (Pate and toast) although all the other starters were cooked starters.

2 of us had the mixed grill for our main course and it was the worse ever tasted. Basically there was no taste to the meat at all. The food had an overwelming taste of chip fat.

Again, not all meals were brought out at the same time, we had to wait for about 6 mins after the adults meals for the childs meal to come out.

When we complained about the whole experience, we were asked, what we expected them to do about it? They were just not interested in what we had to say as they make their money from the tourists and didn't care about one table's poor experience.

I would NEVER go back to this pub for food,
