“another relaxing twixtmas break”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 January 2012

Back again for our 3rd family get together at the Langstone Cliff Hotel and our expectations were met once more with good food, comfortable, clean accommodation and welcoming staff. Our party included 2 '65+', several grumpy teenagers and 2 lively dogs as well as several weary parents but the hotel offered something for all to ensure a relaxing time for everyone. Facilities include an indoor pool, full-size snooker table, and a table tennis room, very popular with many of our party. Copious food available throughout the day meant that regular dog-walks along the sea front right next to the hotel were a necessity if we were to get into our party clothes for the murder mystery event and pantomime held during our stay. Our senior party members and hosts for our family weekend have also stayed at the Langstone Cliff during summer months and report a consistency of standard delivered to match that offered during this special celebration package run by the hotel between Christmas and New Year.

Room Tip: rooms 42-54 have best views.

This year...2011 is our 7th year staying at the lovely hotel...we go for our annual dance weekend breaks in the spacious Washington Ballroom...with it's large dance floor...fantastic lighting displays and sound systems. If you are thinking of booking a venue for a dancing week/weekend...then you have come to the right place. I cannot agree with any of the negative comments that I have read in these columns...I think that they must have got the hotel mixed up or something? The staff are always courteous, friendly and informative. I cannot fault the hotel in anyway shape or form... the rooms are clean and spacious, the food excellent..and the hotel facilities are second to none. The service is 100%...nothing is too much trouble to the staff at this family run hotel. Whether you are staying just for a long weekend break or for a weeks holiday... I am sure that you will be entirely satisfied with your choice. I have no hesitation in recommending this venue..and of course we shall be back again in 2012.

Room Tip: Ground floor rooms with balconies that face the gardens and the sea are the best...numbers 49 to 53...

After staying in this hotel for many many years on and off I found the room not as clean as one would expect. There was dust on the back upstand of the dressing table and all around the edges of the carpet. Threre were hairs in the bathroom sink from previous guests I would imagine and dirty finger prints on the inside of the bathroom door. There were also dirty scuff marks on the walls in several places in the room. They are still using blankets and sheets on the beds with horrible bedspreads. The room basically was tired and in need of refurb. Our room over looked the pool and you could see out to sea which was nice.

The food has always been good at this hotel and that has not changed. Breakfast and evening meal very good. Service in the resturant was a bit slow at times. Older members of waiting staff grumpy. Younger members well mannered and helpful.

The Langston is in a lovely spot, with easy walk into Dawlish town centre along the sea path, and easy drive into Teighnmouth, Torquay etc.

I was some what disappointed with our visit this time. It is two years since we lasted visited. I think it is quite expensive now for what it is. We had a two night weekend, my daughter and I. Not sure I will return again now.

Room Tip: Not sure, maybe request a room with a balcony, but these may also be in need of referb

We had a special family Sunday lunch here on 21 August to celebrate a Ruby Wedding Anniversary; We sat down at the table and the barman brought us the menu and a waitress arrived about 15 minutes later to take our order but no one came to take a drinks order at any time and we had to ask a waitress who eventually found someone to take the order. After finishing our starters no one came to clear the plates until we pointed out some considerable time later that we had finished them. Same happened after the main course. The food at the carvery was excellent with plenty of fresh vegetables but the waitress service in the restaurant was extremely poor. To be fair to the staff they looked as if they were run off their feet and one of the waitresses did apologise for all the delay but it somewhat marred what should have been a happy, relaxed family occasion for us all and I doubt we will be eating there again.

This hotel has a lot to recommend it with a few minor criticisms.
Firstly - the location is lovely and is within easy walking distance of Dawlish Warren. We used the hotel as a base for a family birthday celebration and used the coastal path to walk to Dawlish and the efficient rail service to get to Newton Abbot. The car park is spacious so no problems with the parking. We found the staff (with one or two exceptions) very helpful and friendly. We needed advance information about booking taxis which was supplied and the taxi company we selected was reliable and reasonably priced. We did not use the amenities but there are good options should you wish to use an indoor pool/fitness room and if you have children they would be well entertained. Our room was spacious if a little hot. Some of the windows did not fully open so it did get a little warm - air conditioning would be a welcome addition here. The mattress was incredibly hard - you could feel the matress springs through the cover which made it an uncomfortable few nights. The bathroom was not always properly cleaned - hairs left in the shower and on the wall and the bin in the bathroom was not emptied on a daily basis. There is free wifi access but only in the main areas, not in the bedrooms.
On the down side we found the dinner system more 'cafeteria' than restaurant. There was a lingering impression that because it was 'buffet style' staff levels had been cut accordingly. There were baskets of bread for diners on most of the other tables but we were not offered any bread. The empty tables were not cleared promptly increasing the 'cafeteria' impression. The dining room is beautifully decorated but the layout left very little space between tables. We felt that there was little' privacy' for any conversation over dinner and getting on and out of our seats was tricky without bumping into the diners seated behind us. After this we did not bother to use the dining room on our second night but chose to go out instead. The air conditioning in the dining room was on which made it very cold where we were seated (the bar was even more 'polar') which was a shame. However the staff ,when they were around, did take the trouble to check that we had been served and they have an excellent sweet trolley (all but vanished in many establishments). The overall impression is of a good hotel that could be absolutely great if they 'tweaked' a few things.

The Bedroom was nice, with a large balcony overlooking the pool, lawn and car park. The bathroom was dated, had black mould and could be cleaner (hairs on wall and in bath, towel rail with dried water stains etc). No wifi in bedrooms. You wouldn't expect sheets and blankets for this price! The Breakfast was okay but the staff wasn't helpfull at all.
The Reception Staff seemed as if they did not want to be bothered, when I asked what the weather would bring us that day they told me they didn't know. One would expect a receptionist to offer to look up the weather forcast for their guests. We would not recommend this hotel, although if you stay with children taking advantage of pool and other facilities it might be more valuable.

My Wife and I took my elderly father here for a four night summer break and it was ideal .
Rooms were nicely decorated ,very clean with all modern amenities including tea and coffee making facilities which seem to have gone out of fashion these days .
Location was good within walking distance of both Dawlish Warren and Dawlish and ideally located for the station to use the coastal railway or to explore the Devon coastline by car. Teignmouth is only 8 miles away .
Food was very traditional but excellent quality and plenty of choice with drinks being very reasonably priced and good selection of beers and wines in particular .
Both indoor and outdoor pools were very clean and well maintained with grounds extensive and well looked after and plenty of seating both shaded and around the lawns .
This hotel is good value and ideal for a family break or a couples weekend .
