We have been to this hotel before as it has some good points
The rooms are pleasant and the bathrooms have good lighting which is a pleasant change. There is a good supply of towels and toiletries. many rooms have a balcony with sea view.
The hotel has nice grounds and is within a 100m of the coastal walk. On our most recent visit the walk into Dawlish was exhilarating as the sea was pounding the sea wall.
The railway station is about 300m away and this has excellent links to Exeter, Dawlish, and Torbay. The bus service is also good .
The public rooms are comfortable and well furnished.
However the service is sloppy. Although Reception was slick there was no welcoming " did you have a pleasant journey" or similar. Service in the restaurant is slow and sloppy. The staff are pleasant but there seems to be a lack of organisation.
Most of all the quality of the food lets this hotel down. At breakfast there was no choice of bread or rolls. Jam seemed limited. We were asked to share a pot of tea, that had sat around for some time, with another couple. Hot toast seemed an unreasonable request to the waiter.
Dinner was the most disappointing. Slow service. Cold soup. Bland food.

Hello,
Thank you for your constructive comments.
We are sorry you felt that the service in the restaurant was not up to standard.
As this is an anonymous forum it is very difficult for us to address these critisms directly as we cannot know the circumstances. If these concerns are raised at the time we will always do our utmost to address them.

There should have been plenty of Jam available as well as marmalade, honey, syrup, peanut butter, Bovril or Marmite. Additional bread or rolls would of course be provided if asked, if this did not happen we can only apologise after the event. Hot toast should of course have been provided and we are most upset that this did not happen, sorry about this.

Further to some other suggestions from, and conversations, with our guests we are in the process of expanding our breakfast offering.

If you would like to contact us directly with regard to the dinner we should be delighted to address your concerns but at this stage we do not have sufficient information as to the circumstances regarding the meal to further investigate any shortcomings.

We would not like to think this is typical of our levels of service.

Kind Regards

Mark Rogers
Partner.

Fantastic location overlooking the sea. This is our second visit to this hotel. We went back because we have two young kids and this is the ideal location for a break with the kids. Excellent swimming pool, baby listening facilities, early teas for kids. Only downside of this hotel is the food, which could be better, its basic to say the least. The staff are all very good. Will be back.

We have had a superb long weekend in the Langstone Cliff hotel and we have had a brilliant time. The service is second to none and the food was fantastic! We enjoyed our stay so much that we have now booked for the August bank holiday this year. If you are visiting dawlish you must stay at this hotel! A hotel that has got it all right and yes I can call it a PERFECT 5 star quality!

This was the second year running we had stayed as part of a group of bridge players. Our room was not quite so grandiose as last year's large ground floor room with a sea view but it was still very comfortable with sufficient storage space. I dont know what it was like for the people in the room below us because however hard we tried to tiptoe the floorboards positively groaned every time we moved.
There was a good choice of pleasant food in the evenings - nothing to set the world on fire but tender meat and fish with a good selection of vegetables and very tempting sweets. Service was speedy and accurate. Those who haven't enjoyed their stay seem to have hit occasions when there is a buffet rather than waiter service so it might well be worth checking which is on offer when booking.
The location is excellent and the grounds and public rooms pleasant. Our only gripe would be that there were never enough staff on at breakfast time so that whether you received any items that had to be ordered and that weren't available via the buffet (tea, coffee, porridge, poached eggs) was rather hit and miss. Possibly because the weather was so bad the swimming pool was always full of noisy children whenever we were free to use it so we didnt try it out this time.
But we enjoyed our stay and hope it isnt the last.

Room Tip: Those with a sea view are lovely. Try for a higher floor to avoid the squeaky floorboards but if you...
