My 70th birthday lunch and stay for me and family was made memorable by the owners Richard and Sheila and the staff of the hotel. The perfect sunny day helped to make the al fresco lunch even more special.

Booked room 5 back in May for our wedding anniversary at the end of August. Upon arrival hotel was full with apparently, regulars who must have been given our room as we were placed in room 10. The room was smelly, dark and in desperate need of redecoration. Yes this place is relaxing if your not surrounded by obnoxious kids from London, but its not an excuse to charge top rates for what is a very scruffy, rundown hotel. Will and staff were helpful and food was great, but those are the only good points.

Just back from a couple of nights at Fingals. A strange place.

On the downside, it is extremely grubby and run down. Some of the rooms (the games room, TV room etc) are shockingly badly maintained. There is no excuse for this when you are running a hotel - fine if you chose to have your own house like that but not OK when you are charging 4* hotel prices. The bathroom was also terrible with a window which would not open, broken towel rail and mould/cobwebs everywhere.

There are some good points however. The food in the evening was lovely - well cooked and a delightful dining room. The staff were also a real credit. Very friendly and helpful. The position of the hotel is also fantastic.

Overall, it really wouldn't take much to bring this hotel back up to standard. A (really) good clean, some re-decoration and a few industrial sized skips to get rid of all that rubbish lying around.

Until that happens however, I would stay clear. Shame.

Booked this hotel by calling them. Spoke with a friendly chap called Richard(not the owner). Got lost with Sat Nav and would recommend using the directions on their website. We were the 5 of us including 2 children (2 and 7). Had two rooms, joined together.
Spent 3 nights and had a fabulous time.

Good points:
1. The place itself...very informal, lovely fireplace, comfortable rooms
2. Great food....have to compliment the chef. Also as the hotel is situated in a village, driving out at night would be a challenge for those not used to driving on bendy, narrow hiily roads. We did not need to drive out as their food was great.
3. Piano- my daughter loves to play Piano and had a great time.
4. Home cinema- a seperate room with a big flat screen TV, surround sound and comfortable sofas. Once the children had slept, my wife and I watched Bridget Jones and enjoyed it.
5. Swimming Pool/Sauna

Not so good points:
1. You have to pay for a 3 course dinner if you eat there, whether or not you want the 3 course.
2. The bathrooms/toilets are old, though clean and functional.

We found Fingals by chance having escaped from a horror of a hotel in Sidmouth. We looked through Sawday and rang from the road. What a great chance that they had a bed. A charming spot with real character, comfortable beds and a total lack of regimentation. We played table tennis, swam in their lovely little pool, relaxed in the beautiful gardens with books and enjoyed exploring the countryside on foot. The staff were extremely helpful and the food was absolutely delicious. Not a single plastic container of jam in sight...real food from a real place.
Not for the prim and proper , but just what we needed.

We have recently returned from our fifth stay at Fingals, which has now become a treasured annual event and we would recommend this place without hesitation.

We love the easy, genuine way in which Sheila and Richard welcome guests: they are the complete antithesis of the group/corporate hoteliers, treating you as part of the family. You tend to see more of Richard who was fantastically helpful when it came to recommending walks, good local pubs and other visits.

Nearly everybody who stays here seems to be a returning guest - we coincided with some really wacky thespians - and we have treasured memories of our dinners . The atmosphere is always great and the food top notch (the resident cook when we stayed was from France).

This is one of the loveliest corners of the UK and if we reckon there's only one place to stay here ... Fingals.
